Smiley Face Tunnel Threadles – 4/21/24

I think she was still a bit tired from the excitement of the MN Sheltie Rescue Reunion the day before. She was game to play with a toy before and after but I went with cheese for the game since it wasn’t at home and it was only her 2nd time doing this one. I think this is the first time she did a 20ft tunnel.

Yeah – UKI and lapturns don’t really go together. Threadle wraps on the other hand…

    Serp/Threadle Proofing – 4/20/24

Realized we hadn’t done this one in about 2 weeks. She questioned the tunnel (which she didn’t in previous sessions. Did my shoulder closed too much?

The parts you can’t see in the 2nd half for the threadle are me moving her to an easier position and then back to a slightly harder one where she is facing 90deg from the tunnel towards the threadle path but approaching the line of the standard.

The only time she has questioned a release is occasionally on a moving target situation. Doing it twice in the same session is unusual.
I almost never use lap turns since facing them cues so much collection. I am guessing that will be less obvious when I spread the wings further apart and have to run into the lap turn position so am not hanging out there for so long.

For the zig zag, do the bumps stay in a line? (vs being slightly angled)

    Zig Zag w/bump & Set Point- 4/19/24

This was from yesterday morning. Moved the wings together (against the 4ft bumps after the initial reps). Had a moment where she had to stare over her shoulder because Dean let Demi out in the side yard, but she held her sit and turned back and then did her thing so yay!. Set point is 3.5ft distance with a 4in bar for the jump.

    Turnaways – 4/19/24
From yesterday afternoon (and yes, it was flurrying)

    Zig Zag part 2 – jump bump – 4/17/24

This was from yesterday over lunch. (I think – can’t rember back that far.)Didn’t exaggerate the handling enough the first time so switched to me being on the opposite side of her and that seemed to make it clearer.

    Layering Foundations – 4/17/24
This was from yesterday evening. Only our 3rd try at this game so I stuck to cheese, but then did get ambitious and uncovered the tunnel.

Smiley Face Tunnel Threadles – 4/18/24
And this was today’s session. It got cooler (40s?) today and she was feeling pretty zippy. First time she’s run around the back of the tunnel but it helped when I moved the wings towards the middle more so that her natural line was straight at the tunnel coming off the wing. She also threw in her own rocking horse moment in the middle so I went with it. (apparently rewarding a few wing wraps here and there has made her re-think the value of the wing…of course there was no jump in play here.

I usually do a short session of tricks with toy or food after the morning walk and before breakfast, but haven’t done much Max Pup stuff that early to avoid triggering pop rock explosions. I have been playing around with sits in different positons and she also sometimes has one front fit a bit ahead of the otherw when sitting in front of me but not consistently the same one.

I haven’t done a MaxPup game in the morning before breakfast in a while but her poprocks mostly behaved themselves here.

    Set Point & Ladder Grid – 4/15/24

4in in bar locked into the jump cups. I switched to a real 4in bar partway through the ladder grid since she seemed pretty happy about the 3.5in distance. Also did some leadouts with the moving target after the grids.

    Mission Transition – 4/15/24
Took a break for my workout and everyone’s dinner and then realized it’s supposed to pour tomorrow so decided to fit in another game while it was still light tonight. She was happily tugging before I started so I tried it with a toy and got one good “go” with the toy before she decided she would prefer treats. Had some feelings about the wrap even when I was trying to connect with her and have her facing the wing before asking for the wrap so switched to a leadout from the jump instead and then she decided she could start with a wing wrap after that. (SO MANY RULES!)

No video but got 2 reps of a rockinghorse/tandem turn in the pratice jump area at Fusion over the weekend during a course walkthrough. Also got some good tugging for tricks .

Took another crack at this one over lunch and tried it with the tunnel on the other side. Started with a wrap to the jump on the non-tunnel side and used cheese.

    Mission Transition
Did a second session after work since she was a bit bonkers and because she wont’ get Max Pup games this weekend (beyond some toy stuff that is) since I”m show manager for the Fusion UKI trial.

Added a bit more distance (18ft?) so I had time to accelerate and decel. Slammed on the brakes a bit too hard going to the right at first.

Then did a bit of moving target leadouts after. Watching her pounce on the toy at the end of the leash is making me wonder if I just need to experiment with some longer toys so that she doesn’t have to tug so close to me. She’s always liked that long “octopus tug” I have.

For the set point/ladder grid with a jump bar, do I secure it over the jump cup or rest it on top at 4in? And I’m laughing at your suggestion to have her sit in front of me. When I got her, all she wanted to do was sit in front of me. I deliberately didn’t reward it too much since I didn’t want her always popping around to my front and risk tripping me (also I knew I wasn’t going to bother with obedience for sure and likely not rally). So now she’s probably better sitting at my side than in front!

    Ladder Grid – 3 jumps – 4/11/24

This was over lunch. Experimented with 3ft 3.5ft and 4ft distances and the moving target (a big hit when I tied her favorite orange bungee fur tug to a leash). Had some feelings about lining up to sit (we’re working on that separately and inside) but I’m liking how she looks over the bumps.

    Proofing Get out
Did this after work. We did a few sits and lead outs to the moving target (no jump) and then I switched to cheese for the get-outs going the other way since she had alredy done the ladder grid at lunch and going left is the harder direction. Had a hard time keeping my feet pointed down the line on some of the get outs, but don’t think I crossed the leash on the ground.

For the Zig Zag part 2, should I use a bar with Lift or the small jump bump?

    Layering Foundations – 4/9/24

Had mixed results trying this with a toy. My plan was to toss the toy as the reward (way easier to find than Lift-sized portions of cheese) and then toss a piece of cheese so she easily gave up the toy and then walk back to reset and call her. That way she’s not tugging back to the start but she’s also not walking along next to me which often sets off the pop rocks if she was excited about something right before. Instead she had big feelings about wrapping the wing to the right at the start and then didn’t want the toy (although at about 1min she found a stick and then brought it to me to tug -I cropped the end of that out). Tried a few sessions throughout the day because I wanted to see what would happen if I broke it off instead of switching to a tossed treat. When not trying this outside, she was happy to tug with me inside including bringing various toys to me to play with and mixing tricks in for the toy. The last time, I tried cheese and she was brilliant.
So not sure what to do next. Just take another break from trying anything agility with toys but keep doing short sessions of toys for tricks? Try 1 rep with the toy and if no go, then switch to cheese? Or just end the session? Maybe she was just tired from the RC work the day before even though she was tugging like a fiend before I started the session?

    RC Concept Transfer – 4/8/24

So she seems to be good with a toy outside for 3-4 reps and then the poprocks go off. Should I try just stopping at 4 reps? Or maybe mix in food to give up the toy between reps to see if that calms her down so that she can do 5 reps?

Question on the advanced level with the standards for the next “obstacle”, if you are curving to the inside standard out of the tunnel should you be using the verbal turn cue instead of Go?

And yes -that’s what I meant for the backside wraps!

    Backside Wrap on Barrel -4/6/24

This was from Saturday. Still prefers to wrap to the left. Do I need to be more to the opposite side of the barrel if it is standing in for the standard?

    Minny Pinny Proofing – 4/7/24
I had planned to work on the RC Wind in Hair outside on Sunday but then it rained pretty much all day so ended up doing the Minny Pinny inside isntead. Pretty good going to the right. I was waiting for a head turn to the left but got a spin to the right when I released her collar.

Lift likes the frizzer mainly to steal it from Kaladin and then jump on his head and smack him with it. She will sometimes tug with me with one, but prefers to chase her fur/ball tug toys instead. And that was me forgetting and saying left instead of “say” so of course it sounded like her name.

    Diamond Game – 4/4/24
This was from 2 short sessions on Thursday. Started out with the toy and then she decided she would prefer cheese which of course is harder to find in the grass!

    Find Jump- 4/5/24
And this was yesterday evening’s session. I had the jump about 14-15ft away from the tunnel. Had some feelings about the wrap before the tunnel. Came inside the jump on the rep after I changed from toy to treats but I’m not doing a very good job of connecting out of the tunnel there.

I also let Kaladin do the Find jump with the bump and his frizzer for the Go while I hung back by the tunnel. He thought that was a lot of fun.

What is it about Nashville and road construction and/or traffic? Seems like we get held up there each time heading to JAX.

For serp/threadle proofing and moving towards center of bar: Which direction should she be facing in the sit? towards the jump or tunnel?

I thought about the moving target for her ladder grid but then decided I should make sure she was being thoughtful. Will try it next time.

    Ladder Grid- 3 jumps – 4/3/24
This is a 3ft distance in our session yesterday afternoon. Had a moment where she was having trouble sitting on my left so we did a spin trick and then went back to the right. Later she was fine. (go figure)

And the crowd support on runs at any event much less big ones is always appreciated. I think Kaladin likes it too.

    Serp/Threadle Proofing – 4/3/24
This was from last night after dinner. I threw in an extra session since she was still pretty boingy from not having Kaladin or I to play with over the weekend. She tugged on her new toy before and after this session but decided to use treats during it. I should have rewarded a 2:40 – in my head my arm was back but clearly it was forward and indicating the tunnel and then moved back too late (I claim Invitational hangover as my excuse for that one!)

Hope you have fun wherever you are off to.

Wind in Hair – RC -4/2/24
OMG! I was yelling for all I was worth on that last line too. Clearly need to work more on the GO when the hooman goes too deep for the last backside slice and then can’t keep up on the last line. And he shot out of that tunnel like a rocket and blew past me on the dogwalk even though I was ahead of him before he got on it. Luckily plan B of decel and yell “POLES” worked.

Lift was so excited to see him that she jumped on his head when he came through the door last night around 10pm.

The foot of snow is mostly melted in the backyard, but I didnt’ want to put a tunnel out yet so did the RC drill with her new Tugaway Cuwin toy which she likes so much she ran off with it on the first rep (first time she’s done that with a toy when training outside). The wrap wing was 12ft from the jump for this session (or about double what I could fit into my indoor space during the live session)

Then came inside and saw your reply and yup – there’s the backside wrap from MaxPup week 8 advanced level which I totally missed when I was in NY for Christmas. Since Lift was still trying to accost Kaladin, I did a short session with the barrel in the training room.

    Hi Tracy,

Did I miss a game that introduced the backside wrap or are we seeing it for the first time in the advanced RC wind in hair game?
