    Wind in Hair & Turns – 5/1/24

Came back to this one to do the other direction and test how she handles a wrap to the inside following a RC out of the tunnel. Brilliantly with the left wrap. Not quite sure what I was doing to turn her off the jump early in the next RC unless I wasn’t keeping my shoulders pointed to the bar enough for longer as I pushed on her line?

Doubled up on sessions today since it’s supposed to pour all day tomorrow and more over the weekend. We’re going to lose Lift in some of the grass soon but it hasn’t dried out enough to mow.

    Backside Challenges – 5/1/24
So this was odd. Starts out brilliantly with me moving a bit faster. Then starts cutting behind me. Switched to doing the exits and she was looking good there too. Ended up taking a short break and then trying the other side where she didn’t cut behind me.

I signed Miss Nifty Lifty up for MaxPup 3. Are there going to be live sessions for it? (not that I really need more things on my calendar since I want to get 2 of the Camp live sessions for Kaladin!)
So a quick release added to where the chest strap connects to the saddle part of the harness? Do you go over his head when putting it on but use the quick release just when taking it off?

    Turnaways – 4/30/24
I thought it would be good to revisit the tandem turns on the wings since she had some trouble with them on the starfish. Watching the video I think I’m late cueing most of them but she’s still getting them and is pretty zippy about them. Had about a minute of her being completely distracted sniffing at something on the ground in the middle – no idea what it was.

    Accordian Grid

3ft 9in bounce- 5ft in 2nd & 4th reps & 7ft for 3rd rep. She coughed up a piece of cheese on the 3rd rep right before she got to the toy and then she decided she was done with the toy. She also didn’t think much of me adjusting the jump distances and even did a lap under the deck during one of them. I feel like the 1 stride distance can spread out a bit more. She looks like she was shortening her stride to fit it in.

    Harness – 4/29/24
I also loosened the front strap a bit so that the opening is larger and less likely to squash her ears or displace her ruff. I think either the sideways or the upside down presentation seem tl be easier for her.

    Lateral Leadout – 4/28/24
Had a slight break when going from the wing to the 2nd jump (Decided I might as well add in the 2nd jump when Lift took off for the back of the yard to pee -guess she wanted to make sure she wasn’t going in the ring. LOL. For these you should be looking at her take off spot and not the landing, right?

So far no signs that adding the harness as a pre -requisite to heading outside to train (or to play with Kaladin) is an issue. I’m also experimenting some with how I present the harness to her. I’ve always held the harness from the end of the saddle bar so the loop is on the bottom, but I think that’s part of why I’m seeing her duck her head and put her ears back. I tried flipping the loop to the side of doing it 180 with the loop on top and she seemed to like that better. I’ll have to get video of it and see if I’m imagining things or not.

Did the other direction from the live class. Didn’t try to move across the bar since she had a bit of trouble finding the back in the Live class.

    Diamond – 4/27/24

Successful experiment with a jump instead of a wing on the spot opposite the tunnel since the racetracks with wings have often involved her jumping up. Her line doesn’t always make sense for me to use right/left and then I rever to saying yes/yay and she’s like, what? as she boings. Was also happy with how she was pretty happy doing the wing wraps.

Wind in Hair & Turns -4/27/24

Got a RC to the left on the first try so decided to try a right wrap. Not quite sure how she read that as a wrap left the first time unless she was just patterned to go left or straight?

    Starfish – 4/25/24

Started out with the toy but then ended up switching to food, but she did play again with the toy after. The tandem turns reqiure a lot of thought.

She was great about pushing her head through her harness when she was younger and then hit adolescence and decided it was evil. She’s gotten pretty good about pushing her collar into my hand again but I decided it was time to start working more on the harness again. She can push her head through it at meal times but has to think about it before her morning walk. I decided to try having it be a condition to go out to the backyard to play or train and see if that helps. I am deliberately not putting it on her at the end of a session.

    RC Concept Transfer – 4/23/24
OK – this is 2 short sessions, one before breakfast and one at lunch and in both of them she worked for a toy! She was tugging like a fiend into the back yard so I decided to try it this morning. Picked the RC game since it lets her open up more. I’m using my “larger” jump bump which is a 4in diameter (2in tall) one. And clearly she if following my pushing her line and not the verbal on the first RC to the left when I goofed and used Left instead of Say/Sigh. I did notice that she had a faster wrap around the wing the next time after I tossed the toy back to the wing. Had some opinions about ending the first session.

Started with wings about 12ft apart and went to 15ft. I moved into some toy games after the tandem turns and was curious to see if she got less sticky wrapping a wing for a toy. Or maybe it’s just that she still thinks wing wrapping is stoopid even when the wrap gets rewarded on its own too.. I also dont’ do tandem turns very often. Do they end up having the same or a different verbal than a threadle wrap?

Smiley Face Tunnel Threadles – 4/21/24

I think she was still a bit tired from the excitement of the MN Sheltie Rescue Reunion the day before. She was game to play with a toy before and after but I went with cheese for the game since it wasn’t at home and it was only her 2nd time doing this one. I think this is the first time she did a 20ft tunnel.

Yeah – UKI and lapturns don’t really go together. Threadle wraps on the other hand…

    Serp/Threadle Proofing – 4/20/24

Realized we hadn’t done this one in about 2 weeks. She questioned the tunnel (which she didn’t in previous sessions. Did my shoulder closed too much?

The parts you can’t see in the 2nd half for the threadle are me moving her to an easier position and then back to a slightly harder one where she is facing 90deg from the tunnel towards the threadle path but approaching the line of the standard.

The only time she has questioned a release is occasionally on a moving target situation. Doing it twice in the same session is unusual.
I almost never use lap turns since facing them cues so much collection. I am guessing that will be less obvious when I spread the wings further apart and have to run into the lap turn position so am not hanging out there for so long.

For the zig zag, do the bumps stay in a line? (vs being slightly angled)

    Zig Zag w/bump & Set Point- 4/19/24

This was from yesterday morning. Moved the wings together (against the 4ft bumps after the initial reps). Had a moment where she had to stare over her shoulder because Dean let Demi out in the side yard, but she held her sit and turned back and then did her thing so yay!. Set point is 3.5ft distance with a 4in bar for the jump.

    Zig Zag part 2 – jump bump – 4/17/24

This was from yesterday over lunch. (I think – can’t rember back that far.)Didn’t exaggerate the handling enough the first time so switched to me being on the opposite side of her and that seemed to make it clearer.

    Layering Foundations – 4/17/24
This was from yesterday evening. Only our 3rd try at this game so I stuck to cheese, but then did get ambitious and uncovered the tunnel.

Smiley Face Tunnel Threadles – 4/18/24
And this was today’s session. It got cooler (40s?) today and she was feeling pretty zippy. First time she’s run around the back of the tunnel but it helped when I moved the wings towards the middle more so that her natural line was straight at the tunnel coming off the wing. She also threw in her own rocking horse moment in the middle so I went with it. (apparently rewarding a few wing wraps here and there has made her re-think the value of the wing…of course there was no jump in play here.

I usually do a short session of tricks with toy or food after the morning walk and before breakfast, but haven’t done much Max Pup stuff that early to avoid triggering pop rock explosions. I have been playing around with sits in different positons and she also sometimes has one front fit a bit ahead of the otherw when sitting in front of me but not consistently the same one.

I haven’t done a MaxPup game in the morning before breakfast in a while but her poprocks mostly behaved themselves here.

    Set Point & Ladder Grid – 4/15/24

4in in bar locked into the jump cups. I switched to a real 4in bar partway through the ladder grid since she seemed pretty happy about the 3.5in distance. Also did some leadouts with the moving target after the grids.

    Mission Transition – 4/15/24
Took a break for my workout and everyone’s dinner and then realized it’s supposed to pour tomorrow so decided to fit in another game while it was still light tonight. She was happily tugging before I started so I tried it with a toy and got one good “go” with the toy before she decided she would prefer treats. Had some feelings about the wrap even when I was trying to connect with her and have her facing the wing before asking for the wrap so switched to a leadout from the jump instead and then she decided she could start with a wing wrap after that. (SO MANY RULES!)

No video but got 2 reps of a rockinghorse/tandem turn in the pratice jump area at Fusion over the weekend during a course walkthrough. Also got some good tugging for tricks .

    Layering Foundations – 4/12/24
Took another crack at this one over lunch and tried it with the tunnel on the other side. Started with a wrap to the jump on the non-tunnel side and used cheese.

    Mission Transition
Did a second session after work since she was a bit bonkers and because she wont’ get Max Pup games this weekend (beyond some toy stuff that is) since I”m show manager for the Fusion UKI trial.

Added a bit more distance (18ft?) so I had time to accelerate and decel. Slammed on the brakes a bit too hard going to the right at first.

Then did a bit of moving target leadouts after. Watching her pounce on the toy at the end of the leash is making me wonder if I just need to experiment with some longer toys so that she doesn’t have to tug so close to me. She’s always liked that long “octopus tug” I have.

For the set point/ladder grid with a jump bar, do I secure it over the jump cup or rest it on top at 4in? And I’m laughing at your suggestion to have her sit in front of me. When I got her, all she wanted to do was sit in front of me. I deliberately didn’t reward it too much since I didn’t want her always popping around to my front and risk tripping me (also I knew I wasn’t going to bother with obedience for sure and likely not rally). So now she’s probably better sitting at my side than in front!
