ParticipantRYG 3 – Seq 2&3 – 7/6/23
I did the threadle wrap from the jump before the night before and he nailed it. Did it again this morning as a warmup & was convinced I wanted a threadle slice. Hard to see but I think my feet were pointing to the slice exit path. Where should my feet be pointing? More to the jump?
Ended up moving the middle jump a bit towards the house and it made it easier to make the turn out of the tunnel.

For the USDAA Gamble –
I didn’t even think about the handler danger of running into the up end of the teeter. Luckily I didn’t see anyone do that. Plenty of eeek moments as dogs scrambled onto the teeter at 90deg angles though.Got back from our North Shore vacay early so decided to try the RYG 3 package. (and yes, the mowing didn’t happen before we left so there are weird tree like things trying to sprout everywhere)
Nailed the go to the last jump everytime. Yay!
No issues with threadle slice but he ran around jump #4 until I did a FC. Realized after watching the video that I didn’t connect with him on the right arm out of the tunnel but switched right away to the offside threadle arm (left). Aside from the lack of connection and the hard right turn, I think he could have been correct in threadling #4 if my feet hadn’t been going towards 5. Took a break for a few hours and then tried it again before dinner to test that theory. First time he didn’t believe me but then he started coming in over #4. Just for kicks I decided to spice things up by threadling #4 and then going back to threadle Slicing #5.

ParticipantADAA USDAA Gamblers- 7/1/23
No opportunities to fit in a backside wrap or threadle wrap, but we did prove he can stay out on a line (layering the teeter) when I run the parallel path.I almost didn’t run the Master Gamble as numbered because it required the dog to repeat the tunnel and then stay out on the line to the finish jump. It also had no good way to approach the teeter which was gamble obstacle #1. (Judge was Tami McClung) So I was thinking about doing 1-2-4 (skipping the 2nd tunnel). When I walked it the angle to call the dog to you out of the tunnel and send them back out didn’t look too bad so I decided to go for it. ( haven’t trained a circle back to the tunnel at a distance and don’t plan on doing so). Unfortunately I was late cueing the right turn out of the #2 tunnel. Poor Kaladin charges out of the tunnel expecting to go straight and I call him to send him back into the tunnel and then ask him to go straight. It got cut out of the video, but I was running the parallel line (and using the inside arm) and he did stay out (after a question) for the jump.

ParticipantIt helps to have something more concrete (the head and the step) to focus on so it will just be a matter of practice to make it more automatic on my part. I may be able to manufacture an opportunity in USDAA Gamblers on Saturday. Otherwise I’ve got some AKC ISC & Premier in the middle of July and a UKI trial (with Claudette Mo judging) at the end of July. August is our trial-break month (and ideally less training too….assuming I get going on finessing his a-frame striding before then – I was waiting for some new grass seed to take hold but now I’ve given up on it with the drought. Then the thumb thing happened, but my frame doesn’t have fancy wheels so I can adjust it just fine with no danger to fingers)

ParticipantLive session 2 Extras – 6/29/23
Thanks for a fun live session. I decided to experiment a bit more so that I could take down the course for when we’re out of town Fri-Tues. No issues turning off the backside wraps this time.

ParticipantTracy,
Yes – would definitely like assistance in the future on how to wrap his back paws. I saw some dogs running that way at the Classic but some only wrapped down to the dewclaw and others covered the back pad (that;s the stopper pad right?) I thought about trying it while I was there but then thought the liquid bandage would be less of a change for him considering he’s never run while wrapped before.
And the point about how he does best layering/at a distance when I am running the parallel path makes sense. We have struggled with gambles where the dog has to stay out on their line and not come in over the dummy jump that is inconveniently placed between the dog’s path from tunnel to finish jump and the handler path outside the line. When I worked on it at home after the Cup he nailed it every time even though he almost took me out coming in over the dummy jump at the Cup. He even got it when I balanced calling him in over the closer jump vs sending straight. I think if I go back and find those videos I’ll see that I was running the parallel path hard at home and doing something else at the Cup. We have a Masters Gamblers class to run at the USDAA trial this Saturday so I’ll see if I can test that.
And yes – would love to join another live class but can’t do during the work day or Tuesday nights…

ParticipantGames 2 – set 2 – 6/27/23
As you probably saw – the Midwest Classic was a lot of fun. Kaladin actually ran clean 7 out of 8 runs and I am pretty sure we only got 2 refusals in Pent Jpg because that was when his pads started to get irritated from the running surface. He pulled off a tunnel after I was sure he had committed and he ran by a jump between me and the jump. I used some liquid bandage on his back pads after that run and he was back to his usual self. Luckily I also caught it before his pads had gotten too irritated so he was OK with me putting on the stuff and they’re looking good again now. He went into the Pent finals 2nd overall (5 overall) and tried his hardest in SS Finals but it was a pretty open course so Pam’s Grifter smoked us by 4 seconds and I had 1 late cross that caused a slightly wide turn so we ended up 3rd behind Robin N’s Reacher. However he did do a 2nd and a 3rd in SS Challenge which was good enough for the top box cummulatively.
Thumb is healing nicely and I’m down to a bandaide now.
We re-visited the first set of layering challenges yesterday. Proved to myself that turning my feet to the left early enough really does get his nice dig dig wrap away. Then tried the jump slightly behind the tunnel and struggled when using my off arm. I’ve noticed this before with him so later in the day I tried it using the inside arm but keeping the shoulders open to the jump and he had no problem staying out for the jump even when we did the inner loop with the tunnel first. I’m not sure why this is the case, but it’s happened before where keeping him out on a line seems to work better with my inside arm. (Is he maybe thinking the off arm also signals an upcoming FC?) Where the off arm works well with him is when I’m doing a lead change “get out” on a turn away and the arm is lower down or a switch away like weave poles flipping away into the tunnel or over a jump while layering the poles

ParticipantGames 2 – Set 1 – 6/20/23
I had done the first 2 short sequences (1-3 and 1-4) the night before after I set the course with no issue so I started with 1-4 and he had a question so we backtracked and did 1-3 again too. Had issues flipping him away on 4 even though he got it when I did just 3-4. (Dig dig is wrap left and check check is wrap right for your reference)This is probably it for me for this week since I’m leaving for the Midwest Classic on Thursday afternoon and we have another stretch of 90 deg days. (it was in the low 70s at 7:30am this morning) Looking forward to lots of send and go opportunities at the Classic though.

ParticipantSession 1 courses to tighten turn – 6/16/23
Got the tighter turn when I didn’t go as deep on the FC. First rep I had forgotten I wanted the tunnel so redid it to prove he could turn tighter when I remembered where I was going. Also tried seq 3 with his name earlier and it did smooth out the threadle line.I was a bit bummed that the house we fell in love with had a big oak tree in the back yard but it does provide such marvelous shade for much of the yard and our deck and I can squeeze 40×40 to the left of it if I need to. Plus – it’s a great added obstacle/distraction!

ParticipantLive session 1 courses done on 6/15
Wasn’t really clear on where I was going the first time and adjusting to how my splinted thumb felt. 2nd take on Seq 1 was much better. I was surprised on Seq2 that he had no problem reading running past the tunnel when I did the blind, but I guess it’s based on connection and where you are running as I would have been headed towards the tunnel if I had wanted a BC into it.

ParticipantGames 1 – 6/6/23
This was from last week before I knew his toes were sore. Late posting due to show manager-ing MAC UKI over the weekend and the crushed my left thumb adjusting the a frame earlier tonight so no long notes from me.

ParticipantLoL!
Well he’s running reg 16 at the Open this year, but Elizabeth & Rocky will be in 12s if you want some good competition! I wanted to tryout for WAO so he needed to move to his reg jump height…at least for a few years before I decide we both like 12s better and move him back.
Weather has been awful. We have anemic new grass seed that just can’t catch a break with all the heat and humidity, but lack of rain.
It was low 90s and humid for the USDAA trial last weekend (Poor Karen Gloor -it was like that 2yrs ago when we had her out here). So far looking like low 80s for Thursday night and maybe even mid 70s-low 80s for this weekend’s UKI trial (Roger Ly judging so lots of running!).Julie

ParticipantSince Kaladin’s butt (even with floof) is narrower than the plank, I was thinking about using my original puzzle box organizer for conditioning when it’s not combined with a jump.

ParticipantOrganizer Backside Wraps – Fading Org on slices
Tried the Backside wraps yesterday and Kaladin was a little meh on toys and training so we stopped. I think he played too hard with the dog sitters 2 Shelties. He and Min used to play a lot but he’s only had intermittent play dates with other dogs for the last few months. Assissi looped him yesterday and let him nap all day other than his morning walk and today he was back to his usual playful, boingy self. Some questions for the future so I can keep going on this:
In general am I looking for him to look organized on his take offs and to be efficient in his lines/wraps? His conditioning has definitely improved, but he was pretty good about handling himself over jumps before so it’s harder for me to see changes there. How important is the 3 jump zig zag? (Obviously I need to take this one on the road or wait until the snow melts)
After fading the organizer, do you bring it back for general conditioning or if you see Jumping issues? And if you do, do you ask for the sit again?

ParticipantOrganizers- Backside Wraps – 12/23/22
Realized I had missed doing the backside wraps so fit this is on Friday morning before we headed to the airport. First one was awkward and then he started to figure it out…including how to backup and sit on the plank when you overshoot without dropping the bar.Merry Christmas! And no rush on this one. Kaladin is busy partying with the house sitters 2 Shelties.
