    Kaladin – UKI Trial – 11/26/21
He was so brilliant! Calmly waited for his turn while dogs were playing and warming up around him, did the practice jump and was focused in all 3 runs. We did Agility and Jumping NFC. He probably could have run Jumping for real but I figured more rewards for weaves in public and tunnel threadles were a good thing. Plus he’s going to be in Novice until we polish up our contacts so no rush getting the non Agility Q.
I added an unnecessary right cue in SS and turned so he obligingly pulled off the jump to come with me. I love how he opened up on the last line.

    Kaladin – Weaves Switch – 11/24/21

Happy Thanksgiving! We’re hiking, cooking and eating tomorrow and then Kaladin gets to go to a UKI trial on Friday afternoon while Min stays home and naps in Dean’s lap.

Tunnel closer at 6ft. The Switch and opposite arm do seem to be getting him to flip away. I should be using the tunnel cue after the switch right?
He hasn’t taken his toy into a tunnel in a very long time and he did it here after the last rep.

    Kaladin – Weaves Switch – 11/20/21
We had done another session of the turn aways with jumps (including with balancing to send straight to a tunnel) so I decided to try the weave switch today.
Realized that with off side weaves he should have been between me and the weaves as if exiting them, but he figured it out.

I don’t envy the WAO selection committee. They have a lot of dogs to sort though. I feel like they are looking for a faster dog than Min even if that dog is less consistent, but it was really fun to try out again and I’m really happy with how we ran. She’s turning 8 next week so we’ll just do a fun US Open at 8in without the added excitement of WAO Tryouts next year.

It’s so cool that the skills are really coming together for Kaladin so the focus is on getting his DW and A frame ready for NFC/FEO and more ring experience. His a frame looks good at 5ft, OK at 5ft 3in and not quite there at 5ft 6in. The DW is going to be ready for at least an NFC run soon.
He’s got a solo Friday afternoon UKI trial the day after Thanksgiving. (Min has a 1 month trialing break after the Open and at least a few weeks off class as Kaladin will sub in for her).
We also have a Dec 18-19 UKI where Roger Ly is judging and I am making my debut as a trial sec..oh and maybe running a friend’s young Beardie if her recently healed Achilles isn’t up to running Roger’s courses….so will he a busy weekend. (But no course builds at 5:15AM!)

Then we have some usdaa and uki over the winter.

I don’t know if he will go to FL next year. I am hoping to do the Canadian Open at the end of Aug so maybe he will do some stuff there since I will be driving.

Some of this depends on WAO. I feel like Min is in alternate territory again but who knows on that!

    Kaladin – Opposite Arm – 11/18/21
You’re right! He nailed the tunnel threadles with me moving towards the tunnel.
My wing for the get out was really close to the tunnel due to running into the fence so that didn’t go so well the first time.

Kaladin – Switch on Jump- 11/17/21
Experiemented with opposite arm and using both arms. I think I’m too flingy with the opposite arm but using both arms doesn’t feel comfortable to me. I also worry that it will start to look a bit like a threadle wrap as my inside arm sometimes tends to go with the outside on that. I was using left/right here because I didn;t feel like this skill was going to be a a very collected wrap turn.

Why do you use a separate switch cue for the flip away out of the weaves instead of a left/right?

And what should I use if this is a DW/Frame flip away to tunnel? I’ve tried a L/R followed by tunnel, a checkcheck/digdig tunnel for a collected turn away, and a flip/turn tunnel with Min and am not sold on any of them. Flip/Turn has also turned into a very solid 360 left flip and right flip (turn) for Kaladin with doing the flips while moving so I don’t want him to spin in a 360 turn at the base of the DW!

    Opposite Arm – Kaladin & Min – 11/7/21
Did these before the Open but didn’t get around to posting before I left and we were all too busy at the Open to focus on anything else.

I don’t remember specifically training an off arm to turn away with Min but I do use it on occasion (often in Gambles). I did have to use one after the weaves in Masters Finals Jumping on Sat and she read it beautifully to get the next jump. A bit too strong as she went wide on the turn to the last jump but it saved our butts since I couldn’t get to the other side of the weaves. Including that run here since I learned my lesson in Biathlon Jumping and was a double BC fiend in here. Plus I am very proud of the throw back blind thingee I did in the middle for that tricky top line. 15 was bi directional so I ran it as a backside wrap instead of another threadle.

Everytime I ran around a tunnel or dogwalk or jump I was muttering about obstacle obstructions LOL! But Min nailed all of them thanks to this course.

Independent Backsides- Kaladin & Min- 11/7/21
Oh that was totally it! I had to hold onto my pant leg to keep my inside arm from swinging back too far so then I forgot to let it follow the head forward as they went past. I think Min in particular would have benefitted from that.
Plus when I am running on course I don’t have the inside arm back as much. It was just showing up in training when I slowed things down

Reek! Glad your CO Monitor was working! And how is it warmer here than where you are? We’re getting up to 60 today.

This was from last night but I didn’t get it posted before we headed out for Dean’s birthday dinner and movie/orchestra.

Kaladin did much better switching up the directions so I added the angled bar for both of them

Min was in a tugging fiend mood until suddenly she decided she was done tugging so we went to cheese. I used to worry about her not tugging all the time but she really likes food better and we can make that work too.

Yes – left is the softer turn and dig dig is left wrap. I was getting sloppy with my verbal and arm cues.

Ugh! CO alarms. Why do they always have issues at 2am?

    Threadle Setup – Kaladin & Min – 11/5/21
Did the threadles going to the left this time.

Kaladin- he was rocking the threadles when I got the cue out in time. As I was swapping to Min, I realized I had forgotten to balance the threadles so I brought Kaladin out for a 2nd session after Min and left the jumps at 8in. Then I forgot and reverted to the inside arm and was late so he did the 180. Like magic when I realized it and used the off arm he threadled again. What a Dude!
So this makes me wonder if I am going to be able to keep the different threadle arms straight between the 2 dogs and whether I should experiment with a lower off arm with Min after the Open.

Min – I turned off jump 2 too quickly in 1 rep and pulled her inside it before the threadle but she was rocking the other ones and she was even in the mood to really tug on the fleecy octopus tug that is bigger than she is.

    Threadle Setup – Min & Kaladin – 11/3/21
This was done at 8AM when the sun was barely up.
Min – I have a hard time running in a straight line and not moving away from the jump to pull her in. When I started in a sit stay with 2 jumps, I had a hard time seeing if she was collecting so then my threadle (come) cue was late. And this reinforces my decision to run as many Open Threadles as possible with the double blind.

Kaladin – this was the first session of using the off arm for a more threadle slice and not a leadout threadle. I had a hard time getting the Come out soon enough.

    Independent Backsides – Min & Kaladin – 11/3/21
Did the 2 wings in position 1 and varied my walking/running line.

Discovered that while I may start moving to the exit wing as Min is traveling to the back of the entry wing, I must not be very far across the bar approaching the jump as she kept trying to come into the front and then popped back out to the back. Either that are she is confused about the wing since I didnt’ teach her backsides on a wing.
    Min –

Kaladin did really well turning to the left and then struggled some going to the right. I don’t think I was moving differently and previously I had thought he was more of a righty so not sure what was going on there. And Nemo was considered dead and boring if I dropped him on the landing side so I started throwing him down the line a bit more. However he was pretty jazzed about wrapping the wings so that was cool. (the cooler weather and the squirrel he chased out of the yard before we started may have contributed)

    Backwards Start – Min & Kaladin – 11/2/21
We’re going to pass on the backwards send for now with Min since we haven’t done that before on backwards starts. I haven’t marked the wrap before but it’s similar to what I would normally do and she picked it up well. I think I even got a bit more counter motion with it than I normally do. In the middle, she swung her butt out and then confused my right arm marking the wing with my body cue to say her prayers. LOL. We’re using cheese for her reward since it was after her walk but before breakfast and she was just dying!

Kaladin-Tried both methods with him. Not sure we have a favorite. I think he accelerated to the jump a bit faster when I was facing the jump but may have wrapped and accelerated out of the turn a bit faster on the throwback. I might use the mark method if it’s a wider turn and the backwards send/throwback if I need him to wrap close and drive out at more of an angle

Looking at the rest of the games, I think I will do a bit of the independent backsides and the threadle success with Min before the open. I did some of the obstructed path work in the summer camp. The switch aways look a bit more involved and she has an OK switch away from Gamblers practice already.
