    Jump – Tunnel Discrimination – Min & Kaladin – 10/27/21
Gotta love tree trimming going on 2 houses down before 8AM!

Kaladin – started angling the jump. The low hanging mulberry bushes from the neighbor’s yard sabotaged one of my throws.

Min likes the PT in closer – she was way more confident here even with the jump closer to the tunnel so we started to angle the jump a bit at the end.

    Thanks! Much clearer.
While we may see the backside/threadle opening at the Open, I typically handle those running into them as a lala (backside slice then BC) anyway. And I often do the double BC for a threadle with Min too.
I will need to think a bit about Kaladin’s threadle handling. While I trained inside side arm as slice and offside as wrap, it’s not very solid at all and I do feel like the inside arm down for a slice is a bit too subtle for him. I also don’t see myself doing an inside arm for the FFC or the leadout threadle handling at all. (I do see myself using that kind of leadout with him though since his stride just seems to keep getting bigger!)

Tari was “trained” with the offside arm for threadle slice, but I switched to inside arm/dip in H360 with Min since it was supposed to help you run forward faster (not twisted around). However I don’t really trust it so I’m not running fast through threadles and I can run while twisted around…. Fun stuff!

    Hi Tracy,

Made it back from TN last night and sort of managed to focus on work today. Kaladin got to sub in for Min in her international skills class so she could take a break. He rocked all the fancy skills in the course (minus the DW and a-frame), did 2 sets of 12 weave poles, and decided the new Galican saloon-style tire was no big deal.

Questions on the week 2 Backside trends/course openings. So I should use my “come” threadle slice cue when doing the threadle handling for the opening? But the forced FC handling “cue” is just releasing him over the first jump?

I’ve been using the off arm for my threadle wrap and the inside arm for my threadle slice. In this opening sequence threadle handling, it looks like the off arm would have more emphasis and be clearer, but will that be confusing when I don’t normally use the off arm for a threadle slice?

The Biathlon Standard course from Cynosports was a blast. Happy to report we got the weave entry (dog on left down the DW and relying on pointing my feet to the 2nd pole and my weave cue) and we layered the DW for the wall jump to the tunnel. (Easy peasy after 2 of Tracy’s seminars). And then I got a bit mixed up and she ran right across my feet into the tunnel instead of taking the a frame at the end. It was still my favorite course of the event.

    Jump-Tunnel Discrimination – Min & Kaladin – 10/16/21
So the pants may be a bit loud, but they are fleece-lined and have pockets. (It was 42deg this morning). And they were on clearance at Teddy the Dog.

Kaladin was doing well so we added in some jump wraps.

Min had difficulty continuing onto the PT so I moved it a bit closer. She also thought I wanted a backside slice on one of the jumps.

Sadly the plan to do this in a bigger yard ran afoul of my Friend’s 11yr old kid finding out her friend had Covid. So we squashed it into our yard.
Kaladin did great sending out and turning left. Min was convinced she should just run to the PT no matter what I said.

    Jump-Tunnel Discrimination – Min & Kaladin – 10/14/21
Kaladin had a little trouble at first remembering which way to wrap the wing but I rewarded for going to the wing instead of the tunnel. I also pushed him by putting him on the side closer to the tunnel when asking for the wing, but he caught on.
Min hasn’t done this as much so she surprised me on how well she did. The Pet Tutor had some added proofing when I asked for a wing wrap and the first time she sent out to the PT. She has a strong check check (wrap right) than dig dig (wrap left) as seen when I asked for a check check and she changed her line to the wing to make sure she could wrap to the right.

    Distance Skills Part 1 – Min & Kaladin – 10/14/21
Don’t feel to sorry for Min. She did get her breakfast right after yesterday’s session.
Kaladin was happy to go out to the wing for Nemo. Min had a really short session since I needed to wrap things up to jump on a conference call. (I also squeezed this in before I got your feedback on her so just used Nemo) I am trying this at a friend;s bigger yard on Saturday so that I can move the wing out more than 12ft from the tunnel without running them into a fence. Kaladin is doing a half day seminar with Ami Sheffield tomorrow and UpDog Sunday morning. Then we hit the road for Cynosports on Monday morning. I have no idea if I’ll have an opportunity to try any of this out there since I’m pretty sure I can’t move stuff in the practice ring and I’m not going to try to fit a tunnel and some jumps in my car.

    Independent Tunnels – Games 1 – Min – 10/13/21

Such a good, literal boy Mr Kaladin!
Here’s Min’s video from yesterday. I was lazy and didn’t want to set up the Pet Tutor so I used Nemo. She wasn’t convinced at first but then she started grabbing it later. She cracks me up on her commentary. These were really nice turns for her as she definitely has a tendency to shoot out straight or go wide on turns.

Did 2 separate sessions with Min in the middle (her video coming along later since it’s late). Kaladin likes his tunnels & his Nemo ball!

This camp has been so much fun and so helpful with both dogs! I can’t believe it’s September already. Min and I will see you in a few weeks at On the Run. (Kaladin is still on the waitlist for the Tweener dog day. It is also the 2nd day at my new job so even if a spot opens up, I might not be able to take it. I haven’t told them yet about how I”m disappearing for both Cynosports and the US Open later this fall!

    Min & Kaladin – Games 5 – Seq 3 – 8/28/21
Finally done catching up on my videos and just in time! What fun stuff do you have planned for your online peeps after this? (although I have plenty on my list to “work on later”!)

    Kaladin walk

    Kaladin run
Option 1 (slice right to left on 7&8) worked really well
Option 2 (slice left to right on 8) – Ended up not doing the threadle to the first tunnel. I got a bit too impatient with moving forward and he almost didn’t take the back of 8. However I liked his line into the tunnel and he had a tighter left turn out of it to the last jump. (Maybe because he could stay on the left lead?)

    Min walk

    Min run
Option 1 (slice right to left on 7&8) – wasn’t ahead enough for the 2nd slice on 8 and almost lost her behind me to the wrong side of the tunnel but hung on and got her back.
Option 2 (slice left to right on 8) – walked this with a BC coming out of 8 but that didn’t happen when we ran. I did get the correct tunnel opening but with me on the outside which felt a bit awkward and could have opened up the other tunnel opening.

    Kaladin & Min – Games 4 -Jumping Courses- 8/25/21
And the Forum black hole seems to have eaten this one which I posted on Saturday while I was waiting to see what was up with the weather. Here’s last Wednesday’s session at Chaia’s.

    Kaladin Jpg 1 walk

    Kaladin Jpg 1 – Run at 10in
Thus turned out surprisingly well considering he had a hard time settling when we were doing the pattern game and tricks while Chaia was walking. He did look back at her (sitting about 15ft away) when I was lining him up but then he focused on the course.

    Min Jpg 3 Walk

    Min Jpg 3 Run
After the first run, I decided to try a threadle wrap on 12 which worked surprisingly well considering it looked like I started cueing it kinda late.

    Kaladin & Min – Games 5 – Seq 1 – Handling Options
It was only a tornado watch and not a warning. We got some rain but no hail and only moderate winds.

I wonder if one of your responses got lost in the forum black hole. I posted Games 5, Seq 2 right after Seq 1 on Aug 28 but I think you only replied to Seq 1. And it also looks like the Forum ate my Games 4 Jumping course post from Saturday so I’ll re-post that next.

For the options on Seq 1: I timed from takeoff of jump 5 to landing of jump 8

Kaladin with FC and spin at #6
Survey says the FC is the fastest (4:46). Spin was 5:02 and the post turn (5:28). Not surprised that the spin was faster than the post turn. Should I worry about over-using the spin? Or just put it in where I have time to execute it so that it tightens his line?

    Min with FC at #6
FC the fastest at 4:23. Spin was 4:62

I’m so happy with how Kaladin did in Duluth on Sunday. He did check out Joan Kurlander briefly in his first run but decided quickly that she was a boring barsetter staring at her phone even if she was right on his line after the jump. I posted the 2nd run on FB where you can hear Christina getting really excited when he ignores Shane twice near the end of his run. We ran SS NFC for our 3rd and last run and that was proof of how fragile his emotional equilibrium is. We were doing our relaxed chill thing off to the side which went well, but on the way to the ring entrance, I didn’t see an Eskie coming from behind until its nose was practically up Kaladin’s butt. (mind you – a leashed Eskie with a clueless handler attached) His marbles fell out and he spun around in a barking fit. I mananged to hustle Kaladin further away and started settling him again with the pattern game, but he wasn’t completely back in the zone when we went into the ring so then he started worrying about the leash runner who was discretely waiting about 10ft behind him. I ended up starting 2 jumps in to get more distance. He started out trotting for the first jump and then settled in and started running really nicely including tugging in various spots. Note to self – if there’s an incident on the way to ring, I need to either scratch him or turn the run into an NFC run that starts in the middle of the ring.
We plan to run FEO in a few runs at the MAC USDAA Trial at the end of September and maybe at a UKI trial in early October that is in a horse barn (a new location to him although he has run on dirt twice for mini seminars).

For Seq 1, when I paced out 5-8, it came in as the same distance. I picked the right turn mainly because I was a bit worried about the approach to the last jump since my indented fence gets in the way and wanted to make sure they took 8 turning to the right. I’ll try it withe left turn though to see if it comes in faster. We’re under a tornado watch now and it’s pretty humid so I’m waiting for things to cool down.
