ParticipantSerpentines at 10in – 2/20/21
Yes it was just the 2 reps from the week before. It was so lovely I figured why mess with it.
Here he is with them a bit angled but at 10in.
He was jumping with his butt up in the air a bit in his class on Thursday (at 10in), but I think it might have been him still getting used to the footing (it’s that pelletless “turf” so new to him). I was thinking back to when he used to kick his butt up when we first started the set point. I haven’t seen him do that butt kick up on the mats in the rented space in either the sequences or the grids I’ve been doing.
Here he is doing a made up grid at 10 & 12in today.

ParticipantFeet in Box – 2/17/21
We’ve been working on getting Kaladin to stand in a box for several sessions. He started with having trouble getting all 4 feet in a box slightly longer than he is. He was really confused about how to move feet independently so he’d move his back feet in at the same time he stepped his front feet out and vice versa. I also had to turn the box perpendicular to me so that the long direction faced me. Anyway, we’ve progressed to boxes shorter than him and turning them sideways to me so that he can’t face me to easily fit in them. Then tonight he surprised me by fitting himself in the white one at the end which I had out for Min (10lbs and 12in tall)I see that games 3 has the plank getting involved. I need to to get my slightly short DW down plank (it’s 9ft I think) down to my rented space, but luckily we are headed out of the deep freeze to a balmy 30 this weekend. Should I wait to try the plank until he has transitioned from a cato to a lower box to the mat on the ground?

8in flat serpentines! In response to your other comments on distractions – Yes a lot of the fixation of dogs on walks is the unepredictability of them appearing, plus some of them are reactive (we are way far off the trail as fast as we can go and doing cookie scatters in those cases). His class only has 3 other dogs and since it’s a controlled situation with everyone being smart about managing their dogs, he’s quite good there. We’ll also be working with more dog distractions in class since all 4 of them are not reactive. I train/proof a lot of my end of run behaviors at meal time to test whether he can put his head in his harness or jump up when his raw food is right there being waved around under his nose with the harness off to the side. Once you have a dog like Tari, you maybe go a bit overboard training for the end of the run!

Don’t worry about responding to these until you get power back. Just posting now before I forget about them.Got sends to 2nd jump and he collected and turned correctly since I was pointing at the inside wing. Hadn’t done these in a while so I tried a backside slice, Had a bit too much motion across the bar the first time but then he remembered to come in over the bar.

OK – no video fail this time. And got 1 rep of him sailing over the board.
More running thanks to the tunnel but his hind feet are often close together on the board and he is jumping up to pounce on board (see 2:05). Should I try a mat on the ground before he gets too happy about pouncing?Julie Heller
ParticipantBack & Forth – Ball Distraction – 2/14/21
At 45sec – nice separation in hind feet as he launches himself onto the target but hind feet are together on the target. Is that because of the back and forth arcing motion?

ParticipantZig Zag Grid – 2/13/12
Jumps at 6in. Flattened the angle a bit more and added more motion. Apparently a bit too much in 1 rep! Should I be keeping an eye on how he is changing leads or will that just sort itself out naturally?Julie Heller
ParticipantSerpentines – 2/13/21
Jumps at 8in and flattened the angle a bit more. He seems to be more comfortable with these.
The one thing that has the power to really distract him is other dogs, especially if they are moving. Of course with the pandemic we 1) don’t encounter other dogs on our walks as much and 2) when we do, we give them a wide berth. He used to freeze and just stare and it was hard to interrupt it once he got fixated. That has gotten better but I could seem him being distracted by the next dog coming in the ring as he is finishing a run. I think I rocked his world today by asking him to jump up at the end and before we got his ball. He gave me a look, but he did it. I’m not sure that this will be his ending routine, but I do want to start mixing in him circling back to me at the end of sequences instead of always driving forward to a toy. I don’t think working on a drive to his leash would be as natural a behavior for him since he often thinks dead toys are stooopid. Plus I’ve seen the drive to leash technique go awry when the dog thinks the run is over and it really isn’t.Julie Heller
ParticipantTunnel Exits – 2/13/21
I modified the earlier game for less wings since my rented space is a bit cramped in width. Really happy with his RCs on the tunnels since he came out looking the correct direction each time. Also threw in some threadle wraps and got one too tight and right in front of the wing. Also remembered to reward a fast wing wrap and some turns instead of always rewarding the tunnel.Julie Heller
ParticipantStraight Exits – Cato Board – 2/13/21
So I’m really bummed because he had a fabulous session right before this, but my gorillapod slipped and I ended up with a video of my head and the ceiling! He was running to the cato board and I even got him so jazzed up that he launched himself over the board and was shocked that didn’t get him a reward.
So this was a take 2 and not nearly so exciting.

This was the first time I tried a bit of countermotion as he was sending to the target.Julie Heller

Sometimes he thinks wrapping wings is boring. He flies around them in the middle of a sequence but doesn’t always get jazzed starting with them so I mixed it up with other things.Julie Heller
ParticipantAdvanced Cookies From Heaven – 2/11/21
I did a few of these around the house with a handtouch and sometims using his dish of raw food as the cookie but releasing to his crate to eat. Sorry no video as they were impromptu.
This was 2 sessions tonight. I had to wave the treat bag around to get him to look up so I could see if he looked back down on “ready”. Should I be saying target or just letting him offer it?
Min cracked me up so I left some of that in.I really can’t wait for more daylight. Granted I need more sleep but not having it pitch black as much would help too.
Earlier you had asked about taking his teeter game on the road. Sadly the space I rent doesn’t have any contacts. However he recently moved out of sports foundation and in to beginning agility when a spot opened up so he got to play the bang game on a new (and clattery) teeter tonight. His ears twitched the first time but he rocked it even with me sending from more lateral distance. He also got to hang around and do tricks and get treats when other dogs banged it.

ParticipantWobble – Pull You Off – 2/9/21
I experimented with both the bosu ball (which has a textured layer on the flat side) and a cato/versa disc combo. My official wobble board has sand granules and I was worried that would be harder on his paws and might inhibit him pulling back. As it turned out, he was a bit luke warm about tugging at all on the tippy surface so I let go on just the slightest pull back. I’m not sure it actually got better based on that but plan to circle back later this week and maybe not later at night. (but my usual lunch time training session got bumped due to walking them then instead of at oh-dark-30 with the neg 20 windchills (only about neg 10 windchill in the middle of the day but at least it’s been sunny!)Julie Heller
ParticipantYes No Go Tunnel & Turnaways – 2/7/21
He nailed the first No-yes tunnel with the BC. 2nd one I think I was late on the BC so he had a more curvy path.I was going to use In In In for both his threadle wrap and threadle 360 cue since they both involve a threadle and a collected jump. I was thinking my motion forward or back could happen soon enough that he would know whether to accelerate out of a 180 wrap or continue curving around for a 360. So I added the cue and of course he didn’t come inside the wing the first time. At 1:17 I can see my outside arm is up but my shoulders aren’t really opening to him so he probably just saw my back and went around.
