ParticipantForced Fronts & RC Wraps – 2/7/21
I adapted the decel setup to revisit some of the seminar stuff. Moved a bit sooner on the forced fronts and he didn’t have problems with that. Managed to get him driving ahead of me so he nailed the RC wraps. I really like the last one to the left where he chipped in a stride to collect more right before his turn. And I also have to remember to start working on his post run routine. I’ve done pieces of it off and on but should use it more in his training so that he sometimes has to get leashed up and then get his reward. I also did teach him to jump in to my arms but am not sure if I will use that at the end of runs or not. The extra 10lbs he has compared to Min has an exponential force impact as he’s running up my leg.

OK – progress here thanks to meatballs, some tricks and the tunnel. I also did this session first when he was fresh. I think I rewarded a few where his inside hind just missed the target, but I was excited he was moving faster and figured it wasn’t a bad thing to reward effort even if 1 paw missed.Straight Exits – 2/7/21
Added the tunnel. He doesn’t always want to play when I push him around a bit and can get bitey, but it worked here to jazz him up more.Julie Heller

Good reminder that someday we will be back in person and with other dogs doing things around us. So I put his harness on and got him tugging (it took a few tries before he really grabbed the toy) and then asked for a few tricks and ditched the harness in the middle before setting him up.
Got one (1:30ish) where he actually stopped and looked at me. And got one send where I was getting really excited at how tight he was turning and then realized he was trying to get something off the floor! (maybe a dropped treat?)Julie Heller

No misses with any foot, but he only ran the last one. In his defense, I think he was tired. It was the last thing we did today (the back and forth was done at the beginning of the session and he did a tunnel game for Max Pup between)Julie Heller
ParticipantBack & Forth with Pet Tutor – 2/6/21
Thanks for the vet wrap tip. I’ll stick with the cato board or an inverted target for now. I need to hunt around for something a bit smaller than the cato board to use later.
He’s sending farther and with less help. Still a bit casual going in to it. He thinks “dead toys” are stooopid (just ask Tracy!) but I’ll experiment some more with what I can do to jazz him up more. Think I’ll try meatballs tomorrow…

ParticipantYes Tunnel, No Tunnel, Go Tunnel – 2/6/21
I explained this game to Dean and he thought it sounded like a Dr Suess game. Kaladin thought it was fun even though he had to work for a tug toy instead of Spider ball. Then again, sometimes he reminds me of a Dr Suess character.
I don’t think my connection was that great on the 2nd No tunnel (0:45) but he read my mind and didn’t duck behind me in to the tunnel.
And then I decided to mix this up with the turnaways. Cued the threadle 360 late (0:58) but he corrected course and came in for the threadle when I got my arm up and started saying InIn. Got a run by the Go tunnel when I started moving too soon. (0:35)

ParticipantVolume Dial Naked Play – 2/2, 2/4 & 2/6/21
Here’s a mash up of 3 sessions from earlier this week and today where I used it as a way to warm him up before doing some RDW target work. Setting treats aside was pretty easy for him. It was hard for him to engage with Spiderball at first when he knew there were meatballs on the box nearby (ok – so that was a bit mean, but he worked through it). In general he’s gotten a lot better at ignoring the ball on the ground nearby. That was really hard for him in the summer and Fall when he would run across the yard to check on Nemo instead of engaging with the toy in my hand.Julie Heller
ParticipantCookies from Heaven – 2/5/21
This is a mash up of 3 short sessions (I was alternating with Min. 2nd session starts about 30sec and 3rd at 1:20). I was getting some bob head down and back up again but that got better when I started dropping the treat faster.
I tried it again this afternoon (no video) and he was even better even when I waved the treat around above his head he started nose touching and continued looking down even as his head came up from the target a bit.I should also add, that while they are shockingly fuschia, those pants were on sale and are lined with soft fleece so super-comfy and warm.

ParticipantElevated Target with Toy – 2/3/21
First session inside and 2nd on the driveway since it was actually dry. We’re getting sleet now and snow later so don’t expect I’ll be back on the driveway for a while. I can only rent the indoor space with the nice Comfort King mats on weekends.I think I’m going to need a longer yoga mat strip that I can secure under the cato baord feet since he is slipping on it when his speed increases.
And I had to step on the edge of the loose mats in my living room to stop him from moving those!Should I move to a smaller elevated target or transition to a flat mat without elevation when he is more consistently running (instead of trotting) to the cato board?

ParticipantPlankrobatics – 2/1/21
My chute barrel is outside with jump bumps in it so I had to get creative with propping up my teeter. He definitely gained confidence as he realized he could turn around so I added about an inch more tip. After I turned the video off I looked up as he was jumping back up on the plank again!Julie Heller
ParticipantTunnel – Mat Discrimination- 1/31/21
Decided to take advantage of the larger space and tried this using a mat in place of the tunnel. Mat doesn’t have as much value as the crate so I was a bit surprised when he picked it over the tunnel. I think I need a side on camera angle next time but I was trying to release him a bit earlier and before he was looking.Julie Heller
ParticipantElevated Target with Toy – 1/31/21
Thanks! I think he’s pretty darn cute, but I’m biased! It’s been a long time since I’ve had a goofy boy in the house so it’s been a lot of fun working with him.I thought I had found the perfect box, but the towel I wrapped around it didn’t stay put when I tested it with Min (my 10lb Sheltie) so I went straight to the Cato board with Kaladin. Good news – he’s sending up to 10ft with less of my motion helping him. He does seem to be keeping his hind feet together on several reps, but that could be a function of him turning back to me. I’ve got plenty of yoga mat sizes, but I’m going to have to hunt around for the next size down in an elevated target.
I am working on getting him in slightly smaller boxes than his body length, but so far nothing to interesting there. We haven’t done as much of this as I usually do with my young dogs becuase he had a minor hip strain last April. Thanks to our rehab vet, his hind end is now evened out, but he’s a bit behind on core and balance work because we didn’t want him trying those things when 1 side was weaker and he would have had a hard time maintaining good form.

ParticipantContacts- Banana Line – 1/31/21
Chalk one up for getting me in the frame more this time.
Jordan wanted him to do more work with an elevated target and a larger one since when we swithced to using Spiderball to amp him up more and get him out of a trot, he started focusing on me too much and not sending out to the target. So here’s his banana line with the Cato board. So he’s experimenting with just launching right over the entire thing even when I dialed back my excitement and motion. Should I be going back the other way if that happens or circling around for another rep in the same direction? Or does that matter? And my 2 courses are colliding a bit with similar exercises so if you want to see him moving more in the “back & forth” session I did for Jordan, that’s getting posted right after this one.

ParticipantTunnel Threadles & 360s -1/30/21
I cut out the boring Fig 8 stuff and just started him from a sit stay in front of the tunnel and the little stinker actually ran to the tunnel. I’m adding an “in in” for the threadle wrap. I found it interesting that he came out of the tunnel from the tunnel threadles in a whole new gear. I think it’s because I often toss a toy right after a tunnel threadle which probably means I need to mix up where I reward more and toss the toy after a fast start or something.
Should I be closer to the wing on the threadle 360s?And AU thinks I’m on east coast time. It’s really only 11:40PM here! So clearly I’m not a totally crazy Sheltie lady to be posting videos at this hour!

Left jumps at 6in. Set him up closer and got rid of the front paw tap before taking off. Flattened the angle a bit but didn’t push it.-
