ParticipantWind in Hair RC – 10/12/20
I think I was feeling like I had to get out of his way (the lateral step) instead of moving towards the center of the jump and crowding his floofy butt (now slightly less floofy after his dip in the Mississippi and resulting bath and blow out)
Had much better results this time with concentrating on moving to the center. (well – after the brain fart and lost connection on the first Go). I am seeing him lead with his head going in to the turn on the barrel but is he swinging a bit wide coming out of the turn? Of course that could be partly because I’m hanging back with him to let him get past me for the RC and not driving up the line ahead of him.Julie Heller
ParticipantSerp Proofing – 10/12/20
Started with treats (fish fudge even) thinking that would be easier to reward in the tight space between jump and tunnel but he went off looking for his mickey mouse ball (which he had seen me place on the ground before starting) after a few reps. Got 1 tunnel instead of a serp but he nailed it the next time.Julie Heller
ParticipantLadder Grid – 10/11/20
5ft distance, 4in locked bar. We have done some of these over the summer so I moved him along pretty quickly in to the angled jumps. He had one rep where he didn’t drive to Nemo, but stopped short. The next time I tossed Nemo and then released him and he started driving to Nemo again.
Oh – and I video-ed this just before 7pm -the shorter days are really becoming obvious.Julie Heller

Whooeee – This was definitely fun once I sorted out what I was doing. The tip in the video to hold the toy in the hand closest to the dog as you start and then just keep swinging it around to cross across your body for the exit line connection helped alot…until I did 2 in a row and realized I hadn’t switched hands on the toy!I haven’t used his frisbie as much as a reward as he seemed less in to it, but I guess he’s decided it’s his new favorite toy here.
So I had always thought that blind crosses tended to cue extension so using them on a wrap was a bit counter-intuitive. Or is it if you start them soon enough and keep rotating around that it helps keep you in motion as you get out of dodge?

Turning to the left nicely with left verbal and also just my motion. Wanted to keep going straight for the RC to the right but did get it with a verbal cue. I don’t think I ran the diagonal behind him as well as I did to the left. I was trying to remember to keep looking at his eyes and forgot to move in on his line sooner.

ParticipantZig Zag – 10/11/20
Had the first 2 gaps at 4.5ft. Then 5 ft and 5.5 ft. Should have stopped after one of the ones where we got all 5. Going to chalk the ones later where he missed some up to the session being too long. Also going to stretch the wings out more next time.Julie Heller
ParticipantSend & Serp – 10/9/20
I think I did a better job being less lateral from the jump once I moved the MM in line with the jump so I wasn’t worried about tripping over it. However I’m not really sure why my arm was floating in the air after the send before it came back and down in most of the reps. I think I’m going to blame lack of caffeine. The piano quartet arrangement of Eroica was cool. They only played the 2nd movement but I really like that one. Of course it would have been even better if the oboe solo had been left in….

ParticipantZig Zag – 10/9/20
Have compressed it down to 4.5ft between wings over several sessions this week. He can do 3 and sometimes 4 wings at 4ft but tends to skip the 3rd one if I try 5 at 4ft. This video is at 4.5 ft.Julie Heller
ParticipantMini Pinny Proofing – 10/8/20
The MN Orchestra and SPCO did a great job coordinating so there are MN Orchestra live streams on Fridays and SPCO on Saturdays! So we watched both from our Living Room couch with the Shelties. SPCO did an arrangement of the 2nd movement from Beethoven’s Eroica but for Piano Quartet. Plus a solo Trumpet premiere which Dean really liked.Did some Mini Pinny sessions in the last few days and tried the neutral position today. In real time it felt like he took a long time to decide to leave and turn around the pinwheel, so I was surprised that it wasn’t that long on video

ParticipantHi Tracy,
Clarification on the serp position. By elbow locked do you mean bent and locked? As that would distinguish from a straighter arm with palm open for the serp.Julie Heller
ParticipantFind the Jump – 10/7/20
Did a few short sessions in the past few days getting more lateral, driving ahead and moving the jump further out (up to 21ft). Here are 2 sessions from today (lunch and evening switching the side the jump is on) mashed together. He was charging out so well to the jump that I felt like I needed to balance that with a turn every now and then.
In the 2nd session I moved the jump a bit further to the side and he came inside it for the first time when my connection was weak, but then I could see him correct his tighter turn to take the jump after that.

ParticipantSet Point – 10in – 10/7/20
Yes – he’ll be a year on Oct 15. Pretty sure he stopped getting taller around 7 months even though not all the growth plates are closed then. We’ve been working with Dr Julia Tomlinson at TC Animal Rehab since April because his right hind had some instability and weakness in it after a mild strain. He’s still tracking in a bit more with the right hind than the left, but it’s much better. Back in April, he couldn’t balance on 3 legs if you lifted up the left hind. He’s good at balancing now and he’s driving from the rear better in his trot and gallop. (thus the “cavaletti” jump bumps you noticed earlier). We’re waiting a few more months before starting him on more formalized core work because Dr Julia wants the right hind a bit more stable before he gets on too many unstable surfaces. We have been able to do some wobble board work, but she didn’t want me doing too much on any unstable surface until he’s strong enough to balance correctly. This is his 2nd set point session with a 10in bar and I think he’s starting to sort out what to do with his hind end. He looks more efficient with less kicking up in the rear. The first session a few days ago still showed that, but I’m seeing it less here. He also doesn’t seem to think that I’m serious about the release if I’m standing next to him and not moving.

ParticipantSend & Serp – 10/7/20
I went back to the original strike a pose serp game and used the MM with the sound on 2 days ago. Then did the send here. The MM sound was on but I’m not really hearing it in the video. I think he’s deciding to come in over the jump before I actually get my arm back

ParticipantTunnel Exits- 10/4/20
Stuffed the equipment in the car and setup in a field about 5min from my house just after sunrise when there weren’t many walkers out yet. Distances are 20-25ft which absolutely doesn’t fit in my yard even on the diagonal.Cropped out all the tugging between reps in the interest of time. I can see where I am moving my hand forward too soon and losing the connection. What I am not sure about is why that had him run the outside of the tunnel twice at the beginning. I would have thought the closed shoulder would have pulled him inside the tunnel.
Also got really fancy and threw in a threadle.
I like the idea of using the go to indicate the tunnel exit instead of it being a default. Now I just need to remember to say it sooner!Julie Heller
ParticipantFind the Jump – 10/4/20
Started with the jump 10ft away and then moved it out to 15ft. Had the jump in an easy spot as he just had to keep turning out of the tunnel to find it.
Got lazy with the tunnel send so he came with me (good boy!)
Did start getting some lateral distance. Should I increase the lateral, move the jump further out or move the jump to a spot where it is less on his tunnel exit path next? -
