ParticipantHi Tracy,
Clarification on the serp position. By elbow locked do you mean bent and locked? As that would distinguish from a straighter arm with palm open for the serp.Julie Heller
ParticipantFind the Jump – 10/7/20
Did a few short sessions in the past few days getting more lateral, driving ahead and moving the jump further out (up to 21ft). Here are 2 sessions from today (lunch and evening switching the side the jump is on) mashed together. He was charging out so well to the jump that I felt like I needed to balance that with a turn every now and then.
In the 2nd session I moved the jump a bit further to the side and he came inside it for the first time when my connection was weak, but then I could see him correct his tighter turn to take the jump after that.

ParticipantSet Point – 10in – 10/7/20
Yes – he’ll be a year on Oct 15. Pretty sure he stopped getting taller around 7 months even though not all the growth plates are closed then. We’ve been working with Dr Julia Tomlinson at TC Animal Rehab since April because his right hind had some instability and weakness in it after a mild strain. He’s still tracking in a bit more with the right hind than the left, but it’s much better. Back in April, he couldn’t balance on 3 legs if you lifted up the left hind. He’s good at balancing now and he’s driving from the rear better in his trot and gallop. (thus the “cavaletti” jump bumps you noticed earlier). We’re waiting a few more months before starting him on more formalized core work because Dr Julia wants the right hind a bit more stable before he gets on too many unstable surfaces. We have been able to do some wobble board work, but she didn’t want me doing too much on any unstable surface until he’s strong enough to balance correctly. This is his 2nd set point session with a 10in bar and I think he’s starting to sort out what to do with his hind end. He looks more efficient with less kicking up in the rear. The first session a few days ago still showed that, but I’m seeing it less here. He also doesn’t seem to think that I’m serious about the release if I’m standing next to him and not moving.

ParticipantSend & Serp – 10/7/20
I went back to the original strike a pose serp game and used the MM with the sound on 2 days ago. Then did the send here. The MM sound was on but I’m not really hearing it in the video. I think he’s deciding to come in over the jump before I actually get my arm back

ParticipantTunnel Exits- 10/4/20
Stuffed the equipment in the car and setup in a field about 5min from my house just after sunrise when there weren’t many walkers out yet. Distances are 20-25ft which absolutely doesn’t fit in my yard even on the diagonal.Cropped out all the tugging between reps in the interest of time. I can see where I am moving my hand forward too soon and losing the connection. What I am not sure about is why that had him run the outside of the tunnel twice at the beginning. I would have thought the closed shoulder would have pulled him inside the tunnel.
Also got really fancy and threw in a threadle.
I like the idea of using the go to indicate the tunnel exit instead of it being a default. Now I just need to remember to say it sooner!Julie Heller
ParticipantFind the Jump – 10/4/20
Started with the jump 10ft away and then moved it out to 15ft. Had the jump in an easy spot as he just had to keep turning out of the tunnel to find it.
Got lazy with the tunnel send so he came with me (good boy!)
Did start getting some lateral distance. Should I increase the lateral, move the jump further out or move the jump to a spot where it is less on his tunnel exit path next?Julie Heller
ParticipantSend & Serp – 10/3/20
I had been revisiting the earlier games on striking a pose with Serps/Threadles in the last few days and he was having some issues of not coming in over the bar on the serps or not going back out over the bar on the threadles. But he got the send & serp right away – maybe because he had some nice motion in to it as opposed to starting from a sit in the other games? I went back to the last session’s game of the strike a pose and slowly walking and then releasing from a sit after this and he nailed them so maybe he just needed a different picture to process the other game better too.Haven’t done much with the manners minder. (validated by my forgetting to turn it on for the first rep!) This is actually a borrowed one, but I think I’m going to splurge on the pet tutor for my birthday later this month. The MM is kinda slow and not always reliable with the treats I want to use. Plus I am debating the “run or stop” question for his dogwalk and will definitely want one if I decide on running. Well his a-frame will be a running so it will be handy for that even if I decide on a 2o2o for the dogwalk.

ParticipantSlice Jump Foundation – 10/3 and 10/4/20
Started on 2 wings, but had a video malfunction – however he was brilliant except for the break in the middle when he broke his sit to chase a squirrel that ran by on the top of the fence. He did come back and re-focus on his job.
So this video is the next session where I moved him to 3 wings. I also lost track of which side I was supposed to be on so only got 2 of the 4 position options. Whoops! However he seems to be handling the direction changes like a champ (and apparently I can still channel my inner Greg-Derret LOPs!)This was the session a few hours before his minny pinny. I can see watching the video that he started to get a bit bitey with the tug on one of the set-ups. That should have been a bigger clue to me that he was going to be less in to the toy at the next session.
And here are 4 wings on 10/4/20
Still about 6ft apart. I feel like he would probably tighten up his line even more if I could switch arms faster. I’m going to give this one a break for a few days before I see what he does with 5 wings or try compressing the distance between the wings some.

ParticipantMinny Pinny Proofing – 10/3/20
This was our 4th session today and while it was after a few hours nap, he’s definitely more tired. (The St Paul Chamber Orchestra has a digital rebroadcast tonight so I wanted to make sure he’d sack out for that) I tend to see the bitey behavior instead of good tugging when he’s mentally tired. So I got him to do a sort of tug when I tossed it and then switched to food. He hasn’t shown issues in a long time with switching back and forth between food and toys so I figured this was the smart thing to do.
Anyway, no problems with me staying still and being at different wings. Not seeing much of a favorite direction from him that is consistent. Had to help his first right when he had to turn away but then he caught on and got the left turn away right away.

ParticipantWind in Hair – 10/1/20
So I moved to the diagonal to get a few more feet but this is the limit of my distance in the front yard. I can’t figure out a good way to get the 2nd wrap around the barrel but he doesn’t seem to take off to the jump until I start to move away. (See at 1:15) He is getting better about leaving the toy on the ground and heading back to the barrel with me.Julie Heller
ParticipantSet point – 8in – 10/1/20
2 sessions mashed together – 5ft distance, 6&8in double. 8in single. His back end is still coming up a bit high in the double especially, but seems to be settling down with the 8in single jump. I am not seeing a difference in this when I added some movement. In some of the early doubles it looks like he’s not striding in as deep, but maybe he’s just feeling like he needs more space to clear the jump. And yes- he is especially floofy on his rear. Min poked him in the side of his thigh with her nose and her entire nose disappeared in to his floof! Granted she’s a peanut, but her nose is at least 2in long.

ParticipantTunnel Exit Turns – 9/30/20
Not sure I was fading off to the side as much as I could on the left/rights, but I wasn’t getting those wide looping turns.
So “tunnel” doesn’t default to go straight out of the tunnel? I was saying “go” later as an afterthought thinking that tunnel meant take the tunnel and keep going unless I cue otherwise. Although I guess that having a directional (including go) would be clearer assuming it is given in a timely manner.

Thanks for the clarification. For a while my brain was stuck on staying close to the jump and wondering whether I should be sending to the barrel from so far away! Stayed closer to my fox barrel and he sent ahead nicely to a tossed toy and a recently dead toy. “Jump” came out of my mouth the first time before I switched back to Go & Get it. Either way he seems happy to blow past me on a line.

ParticipantTunnel Exit Turns – 9/27/20
1rst session – Discovered it’s easy to run by the tunnel on the inside when you lose connection and forget to say tunnel! And when wrapping to the outside around the wing and forgetting about the magnetic fingers/collar connection.
2nd session – No issues getting the tunnel on a wrap to the outside when I maintain connection and actually cue the tunnel. Had a really wide left turn even though I was saying left before he was in the tunnel. Next one had a tighter turn and I’m not really sure why.

ParticipantTracy-
To clarify, next step is to stay close to the barrel so he drives ahead to the jump? You said wing which made me think of the jump at first -
