ParticipantHi Annelise,
How is the forward with the toy? Better or about the same?
If I remember right, she is not crazy about tunnels? What are the highest value obstacles and what are the lowest? I would like to send you a few drills to do with her for video feedback.
Have you tried super high value treats? Chicken? Steak? Liver? Lamb lung?
Let me know.Kimberly Fuqua
ParticipantHi Annelise,
I would love to see some video of what you are talking about. I would agree that Wifi needs the obstacle focus and forward focus. So yes, the LBG would be something I would play a lot of during your warm up with the jumps low. In the next lesson, I am going to talk about adding distance, but ideally, I would like to walk around the course and in WiFi’s case have her seek out obstacles (turn away from you and go take a jump). Also, have you tried the forward focus game with a toy?
The other thing I would like to see (based on your questions and description) is for you to do a running reward, or moving reward. So rather than stopping and feeding her or tugging, I would like for you to either get her to chase you (in the videos with the crosses), or when she gets to you, so a cookie toss/scatter. Does this make sense?
I look forward to your video and let me know if you have any questions regarding the suggestions that I sent.

ParticipantHi Louise!
I was so excited to hear that you were having a hard time keeping up with Piper!!! That is fantastic! Just remember to smile and have fun when that happens.
The forward focus games look good. Couple things. I think you can add the “ready” to get the anticipation level up and also the “go” when you send her. You can also add the “ready with the opposition reflex. In the next lesson, we are going to talk about putting those two things together (opposition reflex and forward focus). Also, it is hard to tell in the third video where you are looking, but when you are asking for forward focus, you also want to direct your attention forward. The easiest way I can describe it is for you to tilt your chin forward and then look for the forward focus out of your peripheral vision.
I am so glad to hear that the open container is working. I would like for you to apply this to your training and if you attend classes. I would love for you to “create” a reinforcement station but putting the container up on something that you will have at the trial (like a chair or a small cooler). Something that you can take with you to the trial and have her open cookie container in. Even if it is at her crate, you can practice this at home (during training). Put her on leash, set your crate about 10-15 ft from where you are working, allow her to see you put the cookies in the bowl. You can leave the bowl inside the crate or on the crate (with the lid off). You will do a couple obstacles, run to her crate and put her bowl down so she can get the cookies. It will be a very similar set up to what you will use in a trial. Does that make sense. Do your homework first (introduce this at home) before you take it to the trial. Let me know if you have any questions.Kimberly Fuqua
ParticipantHi Joyce,
Thank you! We were very excited to get the news 🙂
Sorry to hear about your health. My thoughts are with you! If you ever have any questions about class (after this one is over), you can shoot me a note on FB and I will gladly help where I can. Take care!Kim

ParticipantHi Charmaine,
This looks good! I can tell that Tails likes the clicker too!!! Just out of curiosity, I would love to see the difference in working with the toy. I think you can stand up and also wonder if you can use a harness or hold his collar. Towards the end, you also said “ready” then “go”, I was going to suggest you use these words! Nice work!Kimberly Fuqua
ParticipantHi Fei,
Thank you!!! I think it is important to share the experiences that we go through no matter how successful we are! In fact, as an instructor, I think it is VERY important to share things. The bottom line is we all struggle, no dog is perfect. Just when we think we have this game figured out, we get a puppy and they present their own challenges. Every dog comes into our lives to teach us something, it is up to us to find that lesson and grow. I am so glad that you have a support network that wants you to grow as well (sometimes that half the battle)!!!
LBG: LOOK AT HER OFFERING THE CONTACTS!!! YAY! When she does that, especially on the dw, move with her like you would if you are running the course and I want you to be quicker to reward on all the obstacles. Also, with the teeter, is it the movement or more the noise that bothers her?
Drill: When she offers you this behavior, I really want you to jackpot more. Let her get the lotus ball, but then give her 2-3 more cookies that you drop on the lotus ball. The course work looks great, but don’t be afraid to reward her intermittently through the course. Do you notice how she speeds up at the end of the course? This is because she knows the reward is coming. If she never knows when the reinforcement is coming, our hope is that she will work hard to get it throughout the course. So we want the reward to come ESPECIALLY when there is speed involved. The course right around 1:30 was AWESOME!!! And so was the second one! She was really having a great time!!! This was awesome!Kimberly Fuqua
ParticipantHi Charmaine,
This is a great start. Can you try the toy so that I can see the difference? I would like for him to be more enthusiastic and he seems very thoughtful with food and excited with toys.
You can use a clicker if you can manage the dog, the reinforcement and the clicker. I know my dogs gain a quicker understanding in the early phases with a clicker. For the bowl game that you mention, that is a bit of a lure and lures aren’t “bad” they just need to be faded quickly. This is more of a shaping exercise. Does that make sense?Kimberly Fuqua
ParticipantHi Gia,
So glad you could join us!!! Have you had a chance to try some of the games? Let me know if you have any questions.Kimberly Fuqua
ParticipantGreat!!! Look forward to more video!

ParticipantHi Charmaine,
Video 1: I am assuming that the first go was without the startline and the second one was with? You are doing a FANTASTIC job with your play before the run and the “chase me” after the run!!! Very nice work here!!!
Video 2: Right at 0:26, the bind is late and because you have your back turned (doing the blind), there is no connection out of the tunnel. On the second go, you address his take-off spot first, then when he is committed, you blind. This works, but it takes longer. The idea is to have the dog on the new hand when they exit the tunnel. If I had your set up at a trial, I would consider going into the pocket and blind xing on the take off side of that jump, rather than the landing. Make sense?
LBG: This was perfect! You can spread your jumps out more and try to get more distance.
Video 4: You did a front and probably the handling choice that I would have made with the close proximity of the jumps. I think it was necessary to connect after #2. You could try it with 2 jumps and have him wrap the second to give you a bit more room. I thought given how tight things were, you two did a very nice job!!!
Nice work and let me know if you have questions.Kimberly Fuqua
ParticipantHi Dana,
First video: Nice work! This was fun, fast and happy! One of the things I see in your videos is a bit of arm flinging? I would like for you to smooth out your arm motion and I believe this will smooth out Diamond’s lines. Does that make sense?
Video 2: This is a GREAT camera angle. Right at 0:37 you can see your ponytail. That big moment of disconnect give Diamond the option to take the tunnel or not to take the tunnel. WAY better connection at 0:47. You may have felt like you were further behind with more connection and this would be correct, but you can still stay connected and drive down the line.
Lazy B game: This looks good! I just want you to be a little further from the jumps next time and start adding some distance. It was really good!
Video 4: HAHA! you do that here!!! Nice work! lol! Diamond is really getting into this game! Nice work!Kimberly Fuqua
ParticipantForward focus: This is a great start! Couple things, one is your floor pretty slippery? I would be cautious throwing her toy across a slippery floor (I would hate to have her get hurt). You can add a “ready” word. This would get her to anticipate the forward focus.
It’s your choice: I REALLY like the attention that you are getting around 0:35!!! She is watching you intently!!! Just before she broke is where I would have rewarded her. When you release her, use your release word to release her rather than your marker word. I would limit it to 2 times rather than 4-5
Opposition reflex: I would go ahead and toss the cookie forward when you release her (rather than from your hand). This might help the chase drive a bit. I would have also quit around the one-minute mark. I like how you played with her at the end though!!!
Low Plank: Yes, I would like for you to work her at this height until she is running across it. You can also do an up ramp and a down ramp with no middle plank if that is possible with your set up. This really helped my young bc that was scared of heights.
Regarding your question about distracted dogs. We will talk more in-depth about that in the next lesson. There is certainly an art to it and all dogs are different 🙂Kimberly Fuqua
ParticipantYep! Got it!!! So it looks like you are just working on the speed circles and driving to the treat and train or the lotus ball? How did you feel about her speed? Did you feel like she was really driving to the reinforcement? To me it looked like she was driving pretty fast? Especially around 1 minute. I also like around 1:45. She did a very nice job staying on her path to the treat and train. I assume you have used this quite a bit before? I like the speed circles!!!
Kimberly Fuqua
ParticipantYou bet!

ParticipantHi Charmaine,
While I love seeing both dogs work, which one of your two dogs would you like to get feedback on? -
