ParticipantWe got a little snow, but more is promised soon!
Such a weird winter. Normally we absolutely cannot train outdoors at this point in Minnesota! The pillbug game is a fun one to practice! Great peripheral vision practice for the human. Good to learn I can wait a bit on the crosses. And that she’s reading what I’m showing, right or wrong! (surprise, lol)
Concept Transfer: Set Point With Moving Target
Brought out the sweatshirt on a leash again, since she finds that really funny.
She’s 3 years old. After a couple of reps, I moved the bar to 12″. Not sure if I should have done this. Coincidently (?) that’s the only rep where she breaks her stay. Spacing is 6′. Your notes had a good reminder not to do too many reps of this. I deleted the last rep where she showed disinterest.Ann MacKay
ParticipantYes! Thanks for those observations. I did notice that I was sometimes too far ahead for this to work properly. And the dang late verbal…such good feedback.
Ok we took our one shot at the pill bug game before the snow arrived. The ground is hard, the tunnels and bags are still kinda frozen, so she was looking a little for the opening, and since I couldn’t completely close them, it confused her a bit. But here it is! lol

ParticipantOk, before I move on, I wanted to implement some of the things you suggested. This is a super exercise for ME to remember my dang verbals….(I remember I got extra credit as a preschooler to know my left and right but do you think I can remember NOW??) LOL
Anyway, I spread things out a bit and got a stuffy toy, and tried to remember to do some of the things you suggested.

ParticipantHandling Games–tunnel turns
Ok, I gave it a shot! Right and left are not so strong, but working on it!Ann MacKay
ParticipantThanks for pointing that out! I tried to add in some more motion for food delivery and that DOES make a difference (surprise! π) . I also have some food-stuffed toys and i’m working on increasing their value.
Here I’m working on the discrimination. I know I need to work both sides but interested if I did ok with the “errors” and also, I ran out of cookies πͺAnn MacKay
ParticipantOk, thanks for those observations !
Here’s the Smiley Face game. πAnn MacKay
ParticipantSo I played with this exercise a bit more. I added more space, and tried to send but didn’t get too far.
One of the things I notice about her, is she doesn’t really want to speed into the wraps. There’s a lot of trotting to them. So I played around with getting her a bit fired up, so she’d at least canter. She did pour on the speed when she went to to turn. Maybe it’s not something for me to think about now? But it seems sometimes I train in the slowness with my dogs. Anyway, I’d love to hear your thoughts.-

ParticipantOk, thanks for that! π
Here’s “wind in yer hair” mostly up to the advanced bit, which we didn’t try today.
I’m thinking I could be a bit more connected? And she’s responding to “go” and maybe that’s delivered a bit late?
Love to hear your thoughts.
Wrap cues are a bit weak because I’m shifting from words to noises…Ann MacKay
ParticipantMoving target pre-game!
True confessions.
I kinda skipped this one. I’m pretty sure my dog will stay, and she doesn’t really care about toys anyway. More true confessions, I’m TERRIBLE at toy play. I’ve taken classes on it, I try to be better..but…
But in the spirit of being a good student, I tried to think about what she WOULD bite, and came up with my sweatshirt, attached to a leash.
I edited out most, because she never made a mistake. But this was a good exercise for ME. πAnn MacKay
ParticipantProp games:
We’re getting a little stuck on this one, and now feeling hopelessly behind in class….though I know it isn’t a race!!Anyway, we were working on prop games and this is where we’re at. I’ve never had good rear crosses, so I’d love to get it figured out here. We’re not so smooth yet, though.
Ann MacKay
ParticipantAgreed!!
Yes, conformation is a food cue, and if I do it right, it will be a specific way of holding the food. So, yes, a fun game to work on!
I also noted a difference in which way she is comfortable turning.Ok, here’s two days worth of Hind End Awareness work.
I think I could help more if I remember to reward low…Ann MacKay
ParticipantHappy New Year !
FIRST: I must apologize for the music on the last video. I like to music it when I’m training but I forget how close the speaker is to the camera….oops! Also THANKS for the reminder to help her to shift her weight back a bit during tugging. I’m also training her for conformation, and there I’m trying to get her to shift her weight forward, over her shoulders, but of course, it looks WAY different than this. So we’ll figure it out!
Did some more plank work. Since she was good on the travel plank thingy, I thought I’d up the game. But the first time it was too high; I wasn’t loving how she felt on it, although it seems plenty stable. So I lowered it and worked from there. We’re in no hurry!

ParticipantGoat Tricks 2:
I’ve been playing with this a bit! Dunno if my mechanics are any better?
Ann MacKay
ParticipantOk, super. I have a couple of nice, new clean wings that haven’t been outside yet. I’ll add that to the living room decor !! π
And I’ll try to find a way to work a couple of blind crosses somewhere outdoors. Here is the “Shaping In Arousal: Goat Tricks 1 (Baby Level)”
When I first read this…I thought…no problem, I know how to shape her to “get on the thing” but I do it with a FOOD LOOP, cookie toss “reset.” But That’s not the point here, is it !!! So, thank you for explicitly pulling this out–shaping in arousal, switching from food to toy. This is a weakness of MINE, my dogs don’t normally switch well….so guess whose problem that REALLY is! *I* get too much reinforcement using food, and forget to switch.
Not sure how much arousal there is here, but it is baby steps!
Also, Minnesota PJ training, complete with Uggs! π

Participant>>>Question: how stable if this setup? She might touch it during turn and burn, and we donβt want it to fall over or startle her. If the lower hydrant is more stable, that is perfect π
It’s possible it could fall if she hit it. You’re right, I don’t want that to happen! I’ll look around for an alternative. A regular wing won’t do at this point?
Playing with the last couple of things in Week one. So here is the
