So–leaving out the fact that I have atrocious aim on my throws–my idea of catch would be the same as yours. But I also purposely throw very far behind at times because I don’t want there always to be a visible cue on the ground behind the dog since won’t have one in the ring. Not to mention setting up the signal exercise so that there is always something behind my dog no matter where I make the turn would require way too much pre planning for me LOL So I’m thinking differentiating Catch with a word meaning it’s going way behind you so turn away from me to get what I throw might be useful? Don’t want them coming forward on a catch for those exercises….Thoughts??? I’m running out of words so would be happy with other solutions LOL

That makes total sense. I will probably use my “free” command followed by whatever marker I need to use for whatever type of reinforcement I want to give (get it, careful…)

Do you use a different marker for catch versus a toss of food purposely behind the dog (thinking I often reinforce back for a drop on recall or moving stand) or reinforcement placed behind the dog (as in the stays sometimes or again the moving stand)?

Warned you it would be obedience heavy LOL

I’m having a ton of fun linking (it’s not technically chaining says my inner behavior geek) behaviors together with Ted and watching his brain spin, smoke, and then engage LOL The last minute of this clip shows him working through only releasing on a word–not a physical cue. Getting the behaviors on verbal stimulus is always fun 🙂 “You mean I only get treated if you ASK for the behavior???”

Then we did a little stay practice (mostly obedience style) in all three positions…I’ve just introduced the stand.

And in our limited space the wrap is getting nice and I can turn away when his nose reaches the wing and he continues on his way around 🙂

Ice–no outside work for a few days!! UGH

So, weather has been wet and icky and lots of the stuff he’s doing I want just a tad more room. I have been over to Abbey/Jenn’s a few times…but didn’t think to get video. At Incredipaws we have had 1 to 3 other dogs. He has been amazingly good as long as I am a good trainer and I have greatly enjoyed having other dogs around to see where he is at with that. He also has been able to hang out in a soft sided crate!!!!

    Here is threddle/serp short

He is doing great…with moments of squirrel. LOL because he is a boy who is 8 months old LOL

And here is a short clip where I realized I hadn’t been good about making sure he didn’t get the reward without a command–I think I burned some brain cells, but I bet it looks really good tomorrow…he tends to learn that way 🙂

Here is the wrap video…oops…think I need to decide on verbal and add it!

Stays…today the down. Obedience…I always practice standing in front of them LOL

And backing — started on the bed but moved it and he had no problem…he was like “thank you for explaining the game to me–I got it”

We had some false starts on the thredle ….but I like how he thinks

Inside again today…but because I had to run and help my mother this afternoon. So dogs got trained in the evening.
So working on backing up, I didn’t like what I was getting because he was never really backing…he was turning around and getting on the side. So I tried moving the reinforcement and still didn’t like what I was getting…so decided to give him a little guidance…and loved what I got…can’t wait to see how it transfers away from the bed!

Then worked on figure 8’s being very aware of my legs and it worked well…although slower than when we have more room LOL. With some sit stays at the end where I totally let him self release by a second a few times. UGH 🙂 Got it right on the last one!

    And some parallel “jumps”

And wraps where we worked hard on waiting until we were sent! 🙂

One nice day at a time is all I get LOL So here we are back inside…
He did a great job going through the things 🙂

My food arm was not up the whole time on the serps…bad me…and we were having equipment issues with jump bump and him thinking maybe I wanted him to touch it. but overall I was super happy with his patience!!!

Yesterday was too nice to not go train twice 🙂 A lot less squirrel this time 🙂 Can you tell when the cat came over to check out the off camera toys? LOL

Oh Dear…life got in the way more than I planned.
However, Ted has also shot up and totally forgotten where all his body is. Here we are working on what I call “I have back feet?” LOL He used to have them and then they grew and they must not exist anymore 🙂

And then we have rocking horse take one–a lot of squirrel moments and then forgetting how to get into position on the not heel side so had to work on that…and then at the end me going for one too many reps without reinforcement. However–big outside and he stayed with me the whole time 🙂

Took a week off and tried to unplug…rented an airbnb with a friend (we both work from home and were super careful for the 10 days beforehand….worth the slight risk but who am I kidding–yes I’ll be a little nervous for the next 4 or 5 days). So I’m super proud of Ted—in a new place (he’s a quarantine puppy so first new place) with new dogs and a new person. Had a ton of focus from him….but I evidently forgot how to blind cross 🙂

No video today…but Ted did amazing today. Had a lesson with Abbey (he and Read split it because she is still rehabbing). So my little quarantine puppy who has been no where was in a real building (true…with only 3 other people…Abbey and I and then someone doing massage in the corner and their 1 customer–canine). The cool part was there were people coming and going with the massage…with still a fairly empty building and everyone masked.

Ted never fully left me…If he started to head over to see who was coming in or leaving I easily called him back and had a huge game of tug 🙂 🙂 🙂

We started the barrel game only with front crosses to the manners minder. He was awesome. He also did a great job with retrieving in the middle of that big agility ring and always bringing it back to me….no zoomies all night (close once or twice <G>)

Also managed some shot sits (like 5 sec) even with people walking around with dogs 🙂

I am very grateful for Ted and the foundation you’ve helped me to build! (The only other Kelpie at incredipaws is incredibly worried and anxious…Abbey was a tad worried about my impulse buy of a Kelpie, but now she sees why I’ve always loved this breeders dogs!)

    Video fun tomorrow!

1 more day until break 🙂
Here is what I did this afternoon (before I saw your feedback). The backing up…backing up straight will be a process LOL but when I angled myself he got the target much better…I will try your back chaining tomorrow 🙂

Toy retrieve is coming along nicely…along with some puppy brain humor 🙂 🙂 He makes me laugh!!

And yes…when I went back and watched hand position for treating on the wrap…he did awesome 🙂 Still have to remember to jackpot from the right hand more frequently because of all the left hand reinforcer for heeling…but it made a huge difference 🙂

So end of semester has cut into my filming time. But here are some short snippets.

For the sit, I think I have the cues worked out for Ted and I. Catch when it is more behind him. I’m using the manners minder because I’m really trying to avoid throwing food for him. I’m not wild about the amount of sniffing I’m getting with the food drops. I am also working hard on varying the time, even though it is short. I admit I am totally using Laura Romanik’s random heel steps as random seconds 🙂

The back up definitely showed me I need to start adding verbals. I have too many behaviors, and he is confused as to which one to offer when. So I will start doing that 🙂

We worked hard on not self releasing to go to the prop 🙂 I’m struggling in this space and his speed to get some of the blinds in….Need to find a better space for it 🙂

And pretty happy with first time seeing a wing–a little distracted and then said…oh I got this 🙂 Also see how I’m holding my left hand differently and so why he is messing with it more (on top of it also being the hand with the lure for heeling)

Working on the stand. I always kind of reach around the rear too (you’ll see it at the start) just to get them used to being messed with (the old confirmation part of me)

Walking past the prop worked well…I did start farther away on purpose…it seemed to work 🙂

And nice start to the stay 🙂 Had to think about my cues … luckily he was forgiving.
