ParticipantYes, continue to post your homework, questions, and videos in this thread. This is your thread. 🙂
Great working practicing Shadowing Handling at the park!! A perfect environment to work this exercise.
If Raven does not respond to the word, “Fiesta,” you are likely too close to the distraction or potential trigger. Move farther away from the stimuli and try again. And make sure to use your HIGHEST value reinforcement to make sure that you are making an impact for her when she does respond. This is how we build the behavior.
Shadow Handling and the 1-2-3 Game are two different games that rely on patterns. You can use either one. Some dogs need more feedback from their handler, so the count helps them to connect better.

ParticipantHi Kathy!
His shadowing handling skills are perfection! I would like for you to give him a treat every few steps even though he is doing the exercise so well. We are going to be using this game to help him get comfortable in challenging environments, such as a trial. Always give him treats every few steps no matter how lovely he does this exercise.
So I have a questions- was the intention to call him off the A-frame, or to call him off the discrimination so that he should take the A-frame?

ParticipantGreat!! The best thing to do is to upload them to YouTube (you will have to create your own YouTube channel if you don’t already have them) and then post the link in this thread.

ParticipantThank you! I am doing much better today! Just muscle tightness and very tolerable pain.

ParticipantOk, so can you ask your vet if Clomicalm is a long-acting or short-acting medication?
Do you have any video or can you get video of Addy running in the facility during class or recent trials where that trigger person is not there?
Bobbie Bhambree
ParticipantWelcome Hildi!
Wow! A flesh-colored mask definitely looks weird! It’s like the stuff out of horror movies! I understand Addy’s fear.
What did your vet prescribe exactly, regarding dose and timing? When did you start giving him medication?
Have you had Addy since he was a puppy? If so, what was he like?
The first video is great! Totally focused and enjoying himself!
The link isn’t working for the second video.
Yes, he is spooked in that third video. Does Addy behave this way with all people, certain people, just that person that traumatized him? Is he this way only at agility or out in the world too?
Bobbie Bhambree
ParticipantThe good thing about that first video is that Raven was able to come back and finish the run, and with focus!
Regarding the second video, I get it. I think you should bring balls into the ring more often in a trial, running FEO. The more she is rewarded in the ring, the more her mind will focus on the game.
We will be doing a lot in this course that will help. 🙂

ParticipantThank you for this email. It is helpful to have the additional email.
Two things…
What you do in a trial, you should practice in class and at home. That means sometimes, make mistakes! 🙂 Because we all make handling errors in trials and we need our dogs to be able to bounce back from that. I would plan to make a mistake, and then work him through recovering. Does that make sense?
Does Buccleigh like toys? Or is he a foodie? Or both?
Bobbie Bhambree
ParticipantGlad you made it! 🙂

ParticipantHi Goretta! Yes! Just email Tracy. 🙂

ParticipantNo worries!!! I am glad you are here! You will definitely learn a lot. 🙂

ParticipantSorry Elena, but auditors cannot share videos. Only working spot students can. Would you like to join as a working spot?
Bobbie Bhambree
ParticipantWelcome Elena! I used to have a dog that folks considered a one-run dog. Resilience building can take time and perhaps get you up to more runs per day. It takes time, as you might guess. The games in this course will absolutely help. Would you consider signing up for a working spot so that I can help you more directly by observing video and giving you feedback?
Bobbie Bhambree
ParticipantWelcome Kathy!
Everything you learn in this course will help both of your dogs, even though we will be focusing on Buccleigh.
So the first thing I saw in the video where Buccleigh didn’t go up the teeter was this: he thought, because of his line based on your position and handling, that he thought he was supposed to go left and take the jump. Some dogs have a hard time being wrong, especially when they think they are right. If you regularly make handling errors (I say this with compassion), and Buccleigh has a hard time with that, it makes sense that he slows down or avoids, as he did in this video regarding the teeter. As soon as you started moving in a direction where he was clear on where to go, he accelerated with confidence! 🙂
Regarding the table- Buccleigh thought he was supposed to go straight past the jump based on the delay of your deceleration cue, so he was confused when you turned him, he finally came, and then you walked towards the table. Walking was too much deceleration. In true Sheltie fashion, he communicated his confusion and frustration. 🙂
Now after watching the second video, I am wondering about his teeter behavior in general. Do you regularly have teeter avoidance behavior in trials? What about at home? In class?
Now after watching the third video, it does appear that Buccleigh is responding to something that caused him to lose his focus in the weave poles. He is physically sound now, correct? The only thing I could point to is the loud, barking dog. Is there a history of him being sensitive around dogs?
Were these videos are all from the same trial? If so, which run was first, second, and third?
Handling errors are a common factor for dogs slowing down, barking, avoiding, disconnecting, or zooming around. When it happens over and over, the dog will change his behavior to try to figure out what you want to access reinforcement.
