ParticipantI’m glad you liked the Training Night Chat!
There is a possibility that sometimes Forest fawns, but often he simply enjoys the company of people. Fawning would typically occur after a stressful event or if the dog is in a situation he perceives as stressful to some degree. And if the dog fawns, it is valuable information.

ParticipantWelcome to the course, Amy!! Adolescence can be a challenging time! The games in this course will help you through this phase. 🙂

ParticipantWelcome, Dawn!
So in the first video, I see several instances where Fiona thought she was supposed to go straight and then you turned instead, so she took her time coming back to you. This kind of event can be demotivating for a dog, which is why Fiona took her time coming back to you. It looks like distraction, but actually, the late handler information is demotivating her. The jump before the teeter is one example, and the jump turning away from the A-frame is another example; Fiona thought it was the A-frame.
We are human so we will make mistakes and our timing will be off at times. The work we will do during this course is to increase Fiona’s resilience so that she can recover more quickly from events like this and they don’t pile up for her, causing her to disengage from the game.
One thing you can start with is working with your instructor on the timing of your turns. Fiona needs the information before she takes the jump, not when she is in the air or lands after the jump. Does that make sense?

ParticipantThank you for joining us! Do you have any videos you can share of training at home, class, at events?

ParticipantHi Tom! I’m happy to be working with you again! Coal is a handsome lad with some awesome skills!
What is some of the Zen work that you have been doing? Are these games and exercises?
I agree that holding off on trialing is a good idea. We don’t want to have shit shows when we can prevent it, lol!
Do you typically have to walk him back to an obstacle by his collar? Will he walk next to you if you feed him? I can see that he doesn’t love being walked by his collar. It takes away any experience of choice and can create more arousal and frustration. As we start working together, I will introduce the 1-2-3 Game to the class to help move dogs from point A to point B while also helping to build engagement and focus.
Love the leg-weaving games at the startline in your second video!

ParticipantThis is great, Goretta! He’s funny because he didn’t want to leave the food. Practicing this game will help him feel okay about the reinforcement being elsewhere. Can you practice this phase of the game in different spaces in your house? Can you also practice it outside before we move onto phase 2?

ParticipantDid you bring a tunnel to the park?!! I’m impressed!!
Overall, the fact that she was able to play this either/or training session so well tells me that not only were you cueing in a timely manner and were connected with her, but she also was in an optimal state of arousal. Well done!!
