    Hi Tracy,

Here is a video of Reilly and I working at leash play. Actually two sessions, the first session we are playing away from the jump and the second session we are in front of the jump. Is it ok to toss the leash like I did a couple of times? Sorry for being delinquent between surgery and snow hard to keep up but back on track.

    Thanks,
    Brad

A couple of questions. It seemed like Vicki was moving when she was saying hand, so not sure what you meant by that comment.

Would it be better to break this into separate sessions, one just the left right turns, one just the wraps and then one where we are trying to link together a couple of Jumps?

    Hi Tracy,

Here is the video. I guess I didn’t get it all the way through the You Tube process hope this works.

    Hi Tracy,

Vicki and I have been working on the shhhh we call it hand exercise from last week and trying to link it together a bit. I am attaching aa video from Vicki this morning.

From Vicki – Thanks for letting me fill in while Brad recovers from surgery. I love the idea of this exercise, and I think it is going to work great, but I am pretty clumsy at it. I realized, watching the video, how late I was saying hand (your shhhh}. I also need to have a clearer idea on what handling I want to do so that I can get it done efficiently and use the correct bloody verbal. You said in your video demo, that you use this to reward a fast drivey and tight wrap. What would you do if the dog did not turn as tight as you wanted or wasn’t quite as drivey as you had hoped? Also, I tried to always give the treat when he followed the hand, but do you give another when they line up for the next even if you try to keep it a continuous loop? Hope that makes sense.

Just checking in on two of the exercises. Reilly did great on the get it game, so I tried in front of a tunnel. He glanced at the tunnel a couple of times, but stayed with me, is that ok or should I back off a bit.

Toy toy (I am less creative than you at names!) game he struggled with the first couple of sessions. This was his third try and he seemed to be coming along well.

At the show last Sunday Reilly was a perfect gentleman outside of the ring doing everything I asked. Once a the beginning he struggled and then had some good runs. Coming along I hope!

    Cheers,
    Brad

Tracy can you use food for the backward reinforcement? I’m guessing I would need a totally different marker word for food behind? Correct?

Also, I’m having some minor surgery next week and will it be ok if Vicki takes over for me for a few days and sends in videos of Reilly’s work?

    Thanks,
    Brad

Because I wasn’t paying attention I missed the zoom call on SaturdayšŸ˜’. when is the next one so I can put in my calendar?

I am not sure I was clear about he cookie toss. I would stand on the other side of the jump, toss a cookie, say Camacho and he would turn back and get the cookie, then when he turned back at me I would ask him to sit and he would plunk right down, over and over again. If only they would allow cookies in the agility ring!

    Cheers,
    Brad

    Tracy Thanks for the feedback.

I’m guessing on the shaping exercise around the wing that I should stay in the same place and let Reilly figure that out. Is that right? Also, in that exercise could I use ā€œsnacksā€ for the marker word or should it be a word other than ā€œsnacksā€ I’m confused about that.

Today I took Reilly into the agility area twice and did the catch game with him and he would happily sit when cookies were being thrown back at him. I could move to either side of the jump and he would keep his stay. When I was on the opposite of the jump I could throw a treat, say catch and then ask him to sit and he sat down perfectly. I did this a couple of times and then started a sequence with him sitting! Is there a good way to use this game to help with his start line? Hope this makes sense if not Iā€˜ll send film. This class and the Indy study has helped immensely. To be honest first time I have actually trained!

    Cheers,
    Brad

    Hi Tracy,

Here is a video of backsides and wing wraps. I think he did really well. A couple of times Reilly didn’t pick up the toy but just ran for me, probably to get a treat (I needed treats to help get the toy out). Still struggling with toy release. He took to the shaping game fast. Hope I did this correctly.

Another question on TSA game. Reilly does really well at all phases, but still doesn’t want to sit down right away. I can wait him out and he eventually sits and stays. I was wondering if when I ask for the sit if he wont do this right away should i back him up and try again or just continue to wait him out? He likes the game and loves racing out of the ring for the treat.

And one more question. Originally we used a pat on the leg with the word leg to ask for a lineup and sit. I’m worried I have poisoned this and wonder if I should use a different cue?

    Thanks,
    Brad

    HI Tracy,

Cookie catch game went perfectly. Starting to work on wing wraps which he is pretty good at too. Although I think you should have a disclaimer for your courses that if you have three dogs all three will insist on playing!

I do have a question related to the TSA game from start line stay and hope it is ok to ask. Reilly does great at entering the ring on the leash and returning to the chair for the reward. He also does great entering the ring on the leash and sitting with the leash on. Once I try to take the leash off he immediately stands up.

So I was wondering should I continue for a while to just enter the ring on the leash have him sit and reward this behavior for a while and then try to add the off leash piece? I also wondered if I should try moving the jump further away and see if he will sit? Should I try the whole sequence in a less exciting place?

Thanks have a great turkey day and I’ll send some film.

P.S. Bisbee was champ at catch game. She laid down in front of the jump like the Sphinx and capably caught cheese!

    Hi Tracy,

We had entered Reilly for one day of our local Thanksgiving trial next weekend. Even, with the work I’m doing with Reilly in this class plus the independent study class on start lines I still don’t have a confirmed start line stay, especially in higher arousal situations.

In your opinion would it be better to hold off on competing until we are more confirmed? I’m worried about whether this would undo all of the work we have been doing.

    Thanks,
    Brad

    Hi Tracy,

Here is a tug/out attempt. He did pretty well and then I introduced the salmon cookie lure and that worked really well until he just wanted the cookie! Good on the retrieval and the last was the rapid fire.

Still saying get it when in hand too much.

    Thanks,
    Brad

    Thanks for the Zoom chat!!

    Here is my wish list:

Placement or timing of reward to help with more obstacle focus and less handler focus — TTFJ!

Transitioning this and other training to more arousing areas ie., agility equipment.

Being able to reposition to restart sequences in practice.

And as always start line stays!

    Thanks,
    Brad and Reilly

    Hi Tracy,

Quick question. I’m doing your start line independent study course in tandem with this course. I notice in start line class when you are doing lineups and running away with the toy etc. in the games you are not using marker words like snacks, bite and hand. Should I be using these at all times now? They seem to overlap but was not sure.

Things are going well and I have another film to send soon.

    Thanks,
    Brad
