    Hello.

More tight turns here. Don’t think we’re ready to put a word to it yet, or just do the one turn? Still her right turn and my deliver with left hand is our better side.

Also, I’ve started to use a clicker for other things now, and she gets it…very clear for her, seems better than the Yip. 😉

    Thank you.

This was hard too. We hadn’t done barrel work in awhile and I don’t think she knew what I wanted.

So sorry if the camera angle is wrong. I know you can’t see her well. If you need us to redo, we can.

The first vid, she kept going for the toy in my hand. I was at a loss for what to do. But tried to not get frustrated. I kept asking, Tracy, help me!

So. I did a little barrel refresher. Then tugged as I was turning the camera on and exchanged for food to lead her to the game. And put the toy in the back of my pants.

I remembered what you said about body direction, arm, connection and got vid 2. And then quit.

    Thank you.
    B😎

Update. I worked on this inside today. Used the same toy as in these videos. It’s pretty high value. To be successful I needed to put the toy behind my back again, that’s ok with me. We’re getting the idea. I can’t move over too much yet without her going through the jump.

Oh. And don’t know if you saw that I had 3 posts last night. My time zone makes them go through to you at strange hours. Thank you. B

    Hey T.

    You’re right this is hard.

We had trouble with mechanics and props. Cheese was sticking or she couldn’t find it.

She loves the hot dogs in the MM, unfortunately the MM had trouble delivering them today. Maybe there’s something as tasty as hot dogs that the MM can deliver better. She doesn’t like my Zukes, salmon. She’s tricky.

In spite of these things, I think we got the idea.

Although at times I beeped the MM and she went around the wing.

So…I ditched the wings and that seemed clearer for her.

If we can get the mechanics and props to work, I think we can get it.

Thank you for the protocol on the MM.

    B😎

Update. Someone during class recommended Buddy Bites for us and the MM. They came today, bacon flavor, and Mochi loves them. AND, they work well in the MM.
So, we but the wings back on today and with the new working MM, semi frozen cheese, and latent learning for Both of us, it went much better today. She only went back around the wing once to the MM. I guessed I wasn’t giving her enough room to get through, so gave her more and she Got It! Yay!
    Thank you. B

    Hey there.

Okay. So I got out the clicker. When I first brought her home, 10 weeks, the clicker seemed too much for her, so I went to the Yip. But I decided to try it for this.
We warmed up with it a bit before. Please tell me if you think the clicker now works for her. I think if I click too close to her ear, she doesn’t like it?

We hadn’t used a plain stanchion before so I was pleased she went around it.
She and I definitely have better sides. Unfortunately they’re the same side so we don’t balance each other 🤪

All in all, for the first time and with a Clicker I thought this went relatively well.

    Thank you. B

Update. So I worked on this again today. She is really starting to bark at me at times during exercises.
Anyway. Today I realized, that in class when you told everyone to hold their hand at their knee, for Mochi that meant my hand needed to be at my shin. 🤪. So I got my hand at my shin and she did better. I gotta think short and small😎

    T. 😁

OMG. Hot dogs in MM. Pure genius!

After our zoom class, I tried it. And Voila, Mochi lit up!

Kibble was boring and took a long time to eat.

I didn’t even know one could put something like hot dogs in a MM.

    Thank you so much.

This will be a game changer for us!

    Hi Tracy!

So trying to do DR again.

I moved the reward up to a table and am using the same toy with a treat for giving the toy.

Golly gee! 😳 In the first video I caught myself chatting away again..saying yes, or good girl. I do believe you said NOT to mark behavior for this. It muddies the water and isn’t clear for her. Just say ‘Fun’ and run to reward. So I stopped myself and the session.

Second video I really tried to keep quiet and only use appropriate words. I thought it went a lot better? Maybe?

A couple of questions. Do we eventually get the reward lower and lower so they really have to make a choice? Is that important? Having us move the reward up to the table made this game easily successful, thank you. But she can’t get to them to make a choice. Perhaps I’m over complicating this. 😉

You talked about ping, ponging. Would you ping pong from treats as the reward to a toy as the reward in the same session? Or keep it purely one or the other?

Vid 3. I wanted you to see our Arousal and return to baseline. Does this look right?
I found a swatch of real rabbit fur and using licky mat with peanut butter. It seems like I should be touching her and her collar while she’s licking. Would that be ok?

BTW. I’m delighted she’s willing to play all these games. If I can find more ways to giggle and laugh, she would respond even better.

    Thank you.
    Barbi 😎

    Hi.

I wasn’t sure if we were supposed to video and submit our Remote Reinforcement so I didn’t record our first 2 sessions…food and then toy.

So here is our second and a subsequent session.

It seems like I need to help her by saying her name and clapping my hands. We don’t have a lot of tricks yet, but we can do other things, so we did.

My word is “FUN”. ‘Free’, for releasing the toy, seems too close to ‘FUN’. So I’m going to change my release word to ‘Give’. Which will be interesting because I’ve used Free for all my dogs for years. But ‘Fun’ makes me giggle so I think that’s more important.

For a session with a toy, I chose one where she takes the toy. I wasn’t sure what to do in the moment when she took the toy, I don’t think your demo videos showed that?? But I remembered your comment on an early session of ours…So what if she takes the toy, let her practice bringing it back to you. So I did.

It’s my opinion that this is a moderate value toy for her, it’s the one she voluntarily left for cheese in our barrel work. But maybe I need a lesser value one?
No treat exchange for giving the toy, right? She didn’t want to give it up at times.

But I think we worked it out, a bit.

It’s funny, odd 😉, with my other dogs I did this before first trials. But I can see this is invaluable…to train this at this phase of their development.

    Thank you.

    Hi again.

This morning, before I read your reply, I did an experiment.

After our collar game, to the same level I described above, I tried using toys to see what triggered her. I did not give her a treat for giving up the toy to not muddy the water.

First, took her collar while tugging for the start of the Toy Race Game, had her release the toy, then holding the toy in front of her, then tossing it, releasing her to race her to it, she accepted my thumb under her collar for that. Fine.

Then, I took her collar while tugging, had her release the toy just like the start of the Race Game, but instead I set the toy down next to me or tossed it behind me for a Delayed Reinforcement, and she had a fit, like what you saw on the video.

We did both of these as stand alone sessions, not asking for any other behavior.

We used real sheepskin. I’ve learned the higher the value of the toy, the worse she is.

I only did this once, so not to totally trash the progress we’ve made.

This all seems to back up everything you’ve told me about the neurobiology of her behavior. It’s good to know, it not a choice, but a reaction to being so aroused.

    We’ll work on it. 👍🏻😎

    Thank you. B

BTW. I wish I knew all this when Posh was a pup. 😉

    Hello.

Great idea about the tiny bit of food on my finger. I’ve got a tube of squeeze peanut butter but it is big and would be awkward to use. I’ll look for those little cream cheese packets, or rig up something on my own. I use a tube of anchovy paste for teeter training, but would NOT want to put that on my finger🤮

As for the touching, she LOVES people. Goes up to everyone all wiggly to be petted, and/or picked up, and that includes everyone at the vet. People giggle at how infectious her personality is. They love her right back. ❤️

At home she always wants to be next to me in my chair or otherwise and my hand on her, or petting her.

For our collar protocol, I can now slip my thumb under her collar/pulling on her collar, with the rest of my hand on her side. She lets me move her next to my leg with that hand, even as I turn in a circle and so she moves her rear around/to the side to keep touching my leg, like pivoting her rear end around a disc while her front feet are on the disc. We’ve started to name it, ‘Come Side’. But of course we’re doing all this with her eating cheese out of my other hand.

As a game itself, she lets me do it. She reacts negatively if I try to do it before a game, like the start line.

I’ll try your suggestions with a lucky mat. It’ll be fun to dance around and have her chase me. Should I try it with a tug toy?

    Thank you. B

    Tracy,

Well, you said try sideways and backwards sends, so we did.

I get mixed up which way my body should be facing and what I should be doing with my arms and legs, even if I practice without her first.

But this is what we got.

BTW. I’ve created a little monster for the pool🤪. She loves to go over and jump on the first step, running back and forth grabbing flowers, etc…makes her SO happy.

    Thank you. B

    Hi.

Here we have Rocking horse 1, first time outside and first time with a toy. I’ve only used treats before for barrel work.

Im trying to use less words and line her up with the palm of my hand. This first time I asked for the toy I gave her a treat, then after that not…didn’t want to flatten out her enthusiasm with food. She was grabbing at my hand a lot, or maybe for the toy? I think we need to start our reps more thoughtfully? She seems to be rersponding to ‘Ready’. I still CANNOT touch her, it actually shuts her down. When I do give her a treat, it’s just one, but it takes her a long time to eat it.

Rocking horse 2, we tried more distance between barrels and the entire sequence all at once. She seemed to enjoy this, as did I.

I had read, watched the video for this week’s resilience lesson before these sessions. You’ve given me a new perspective on dogs running off with their toys or taking a victory lap while training. It actually gave me great joy to see her run around with her toy at the end of video 2 before bringing it back to me. She was ready to engage with me when she brought back. I didn’t even need to bring out her second toy to get her back 👍🏻😉

    Thank you. B

    Hi again 😎

    Go out for prop here.

We had trouble. I was trying a new treat, hot dogs, but maybe too big? Thought they would be easy to see and throw. Cheese can get sticky in our heat.

We hadn’t worked parallel with the prop in awhile so we practiced that first. We’re having trouble actually hitting the prop with her feet instead of jumping over, even I’m close.

So don’t know if we’re doing this right. I think it’s going to take some latent learning for both of us. 🤪

It’s interesting that you use your off arm for this. For some reason I’ve used my off arm for the ‘out’ obstacle, especially tunnel entries, for years, my dogs just seem to get it. But people here think it’s weird and always ask me why I do it. And I don’t have a good answer, just seems natural.

    Thank you. B

Yes, only puking in the car now and then or when plays super hard with Posh after drinking a lot of water.
She has puppy hiccups 😉 which the vet thinks she’ll grow out of too.
    And, Still teething.
    Thank you for asking. 👍🏻

Oh, and she did really well in class this week. She’s really getting the hang of the resilience game. 😎

    Got it.
I tend to use a Yip when I see you use a clicker on the demo videos. But I don’t want it to cause that behavior, as it has in other games.
Will try to use it ‘more wisely’.
    Thank you.

When I was a girl, my nickname was ‘Chatty Cathy’ like the popular doll of that era. I was painfully shy around people I didn’t know, but talked nonstop around those I did. As a teenager my mom got me custom stationary with ‘Babble from Barbara’ printed on it. Ish……I never used it.
All this to say, I chatter a lot, especially to fill in gaps.
Thank you for pointing this out.
I’ll try to be more cognizant of what I’m saying and when.
I’m sure my chatter comes across to dogs like the adults talking in the Peanuts cartoon…… Wah Wah. Wah Wah. Wah…Wah 🤪
