ParticipantWhat are your thoughts on using the same backside verbal for wrap and slice? She’s had a couple years of hearing push to mean go to the backside. I’m not saying she’s not smart enough to get it, I’m wondering if I’m smart enough. It was a big move for me to start teaching soft turns and remembering which way left and right is from the dogs view, LOL!!

ParticipantJust the thought of throwing the toy is giving me heart palpitations but thanks for all the ideas and info. I’ll use 2 toys😁 we’ll practice at class this week.
I did a few reps today. She’s totally getting the serp stuff, better I though she would.
We did just a few verbal reps and the first side went so well then I changed sides and not so much. I think my mechanics were much better though?

ParticipantGood morning
Yes please. Give me some ideas for working stays at the trial.
I can’t throw a toy back to her (I think you can throw a toy in UKI? but not sure what she’d do as far as running around) so I’m trying to come up with ways to reward her in place.Christine Fleischmann
ParticipantI think I did it again, years of saying “yes” is hard to undo. I promise I’m trying.
All of this week 3 stuff went really well until I started changing things up and she really had to listen. She gets patterned. It MUST be the backside right? Sometimes I reset, did a cookie, sometimes I just resent. Resetting definitely helps. How do I transition though to just listen to me the first time which is what I need in a trial, LOL!!
Speaking of trialing, I’m doing UKI this Saturday. Lots of training opportunities. I think we need to work on our “SIT” verbal the most though. She’s pushing it and I’m not giving in darn it.Christine Fleischmann
ParticipantThis is kind of a hodge podge between more wrap work and soft turns. I’m still on week 1-2. I’ll be honest I thought her understanding of wrap – dig was stronger when there was something (a jump) near by. She struggled bad with that. I had to move the wing a distance away from the jump and even then there were still times she took it.
Also, what’s the best way to work go when you’ve been doing this close work. She’ll eventually go, but right off the bat she’s not going and just gets mad, LOL. Should I put motion in to make it easier?I looked for a video of the RC/backside scenario and couldn’t find one. They are not scenarios where there could be a collision or she would need to cut me off. She’s typically already ahead and I wonder if she’s just not committed to the front side of the jump and I push on the diagonal and that’s all it takes to push her off. I have a feeling you may see it live in a few months LOL!

ParticipantI think we can ramp up the soft turns more? I also threw in some wraps with some go’s. She was excited cuz her friends were there😄
Not related to wraps, but my biggest struggle with verbals is when I want to RC and she goes to the back side. I have been using a rear cross verbal switch. This does not mean anything if I’m pushing her off the RC line. She is more than happy to just swing around to the backside.
Speaking of backsides, I only have 1 verbal push. I do understand the importance of the wrap vs the slice, but not sure which to keep as push and trying to come up with something else that makes sense to me. I use back a lot with her backing up literally so don’t want to use it for agility.
Christine Fleischmann
ParticipantI’m going to print this and put it in my agility bag. This is exactly what I needed to help me plan. I understand what you’re saying.
I really like the option about running with exposed toy in FEO till she’s solid and then hiding it till she’s solid. I’ll make it more training like initially and help her be right.Thank you for this well timed class. I only wish it could continue when I can start trialing again 🙂
Merry Christmas Tracy and thanks for all the great training advice again in 2021.What’s next on AU? I feel like an AU junky, can’t wait for my next fix, LOL!!!

ParticipantUKI trials are slim around here. I thought a new nearby facility would be a good option, but unfortunately the footing is iffy.
So can you help me with an AKC plan?
When I can do FEO with a toy. Should I release from the contact to the toy or stay closer to her and have a long toy with me and toss her end to her with a “catch”? Both?
The runs that I can’t do FEO, I can still “train”. I have no problems leaving early for good behavior if I’m making it clear to her that’s what’s happening. Could I use some remote reinforcement? SHe gets her AF and we leave to her cheese? Or when I’m comfortable that her leash is a reward I could release and run to the leash?
I also want a plan for if she doesn’t stop. I’m feeling pretty good about her contacts right now and I have a seminar coming up. Even though it’s home, she still gets rev’d up for them. So I can practice what I need to do. I think part of my stress is not knowing exactly what I should do if she comes off. I’ve been putting her back on but it seemed to just make her higher. As you can tell, she justs wants to run. I have SO much confidence in the JWW ring, I need that in STD too.Christine Fleischmann
ParticipantI pre-placed her lotus ball on the window sill before I brought her in so her first attempt she did not know it was there. She did know I put it out for the 2nd AF.
We played a hodge podge of games today. She has done the majority of these at some point though I’ve never proofed the weaves with that fav toy hanging down and it made her even faster and more focused to get to the end.
When you were doing your leash work, are you telling him to go to his leash at the end of his run or do you just run over with them, put it on and then ask for tug?
I had taught Ti the “leash” cue so that at the end of his run it gave him something more to focus on. If I said leash he would start looking around for it.I want to keep working the leash and will start doing that in class. I need to do more trial like things in class. This course has really shown me that.
What else do you think I should focus on?
I’m not entered in any trials until February and can do some FEO runs at that trial.Loved seeing Exie 🙂

ParticipantThings are getting back to normal and while I haven’t had a chance to read week 4 yet this is what my contact proofing normally is. I’d say she is in trial mode. Turn your volume down😜
Next time I’ll do some remote rewards.-

ParticipantHere’s a short clip of her contact behavior with catch. Do I keep working the catch on her stay to reinforce to her that she can move?
I haven’t looked at any week 4 material yet but I feel like the main behaviors I should keep working on are the catch and turn back for her start line stay and for the contacts it would be catch and the remote reinforcement.
I played some more with the remote stuff and food goes well, the toy not so much and then doesn’t she bring it back right to my hands like I’ve been working on.
But the 2nd time she left it and didn’t go for it until I told her to. The next part though is – I do want a certain behavior at the toy. Is it unrealistic for her to sit? and I give her whatever reward it is? I’m going to have to work up to that. What about if I put the reward up on a window sill? She’d be less likely to grab it up there.
I’ve struggled with what to say for the remote reward. I love “let’s go”, but I use it ALL the time in everyday life. I used “boogie” tonight. Not sure I like it, but the hardest part shouldn’t be picking a word – LOL!!Christine Fleischmann
ParticipantBy 50% on the contacts I mean she stays in position when I say “catch” vs coming off for the treat. It’s rare I can get her off 2o2o at this point.
And yes I understand (now) that she should be able to come off with “catch”, but she won’t.I use “back” a lot for obedience and just conditioning stuff but not “turn”.

ParticipantWe’ve been spending more time on the catch. She still gets it every time in a sit, but about 50% on a contact. She’ll stand on her head to catch the treat and maintain criteria.
The placed reward on the wing was awesome. She had to think it through but finally got it. I can see how the self control piece. Will really help her as well.
I pretty much say “get it” for everything🙄 I’m trying not to. I decided when I’m placing a reward behind her to say “turn back” or maybe just turn. She was quickly getting it from a sit but if I get closer to the jump like I did today. She ignored it and went forward.
Her list of distractions:
Pretty much anything that moves or makes noise😂
She goes nuts when someone uses verbals that she knows
I feel like I could list all her likes as well since they are also distractions. She’s easily excitable, BUT I’ve also found when we’re working and we’re engaged with each other, she’s a solid worker and very little distracts her. The second we’re done though if I disengage even the slightest bit that’s when she’ll bugger off.
She’s a good teacher😊Christine Fleischmann
ParticipantAhhh – thank you:) Yes that makes perfect sense. I was focusing more on the release which both cues give her but not the where does she go/do with that release.
Christine Fleischmann
ParticipantWhat is the difference between releasing with catch on the AF vs my release cue?
Bummed I’ll miss the next call. I’m picking up my new van then😁 -
