ParticipantYes you did see that correctly – he went around the jump quite a few times. We’ve worked this exercise once before and really broke it down and that is a new occurrence since then. I wasn’t sure why either. He does love his toy and I never trained him to call off of it and it may not have been placed on the ground directly in the middle of the jump. But sometimes he did specifically go around it to get it. I will pay more attention to sides when we try it again. However I also tend to lump things when training so thought maybe I did something inadvertently so I’m glad I showed you. Plus, the little things that seem so obvious that I miss for breaking down little drills like this is so helpful…like putting the jump closer to the tunnel so he really can’t be wrong☺️

ParticipantHere’s Emmie’s distance skills part 1.
Her wrap cues are:
Wrap to right – check
Wrap to left – digTechnically they are supposed to be universal but I typically send her from my left side to wrap right and from my right side to wrap left. So I made it a little harder for her when practicing her verbals at the beginning and only sent her from one side.

ParticipantAlthough posting everything now, these sessions were done on different days 🙂 This is Kippy’s distance skills part 1. He has a wrap verbal ‘around’ that I have only used on a cone before and never on a jump. So I practiced that a few times to help him out. Being that he’s 8 I figure I’ll just stick with one wrap verbal he knows and not have two separate ones. We are set in our ways and I’m too lazy LOL.

ParticipantHere is Emmie’s independent tunnel skills. We have only worked soft turn verbals maybe twice inside and not with any associated equipment. Left soft turns will be ‘turn’. We only worked one side this session.

ParticipantSo I hope you don’t mind but I modified the independent tunnel skills for Kippy a bit. He does not have a great ‘go’ so I tried to break that down here instead since I knew he’d need more help on that rather then tunnel sends. (Or I need more help breaking stuff down for him on that).

ParticipantI emailed you an example!

ParticipantHi Tracy – one of the course trends I’d love to break down (if it’s not already on your list) is a weaves set up. The dog has to do the weaves then they have to switch away from you at the end of the weaves typically into a tunnel. The handler is typically forced to layer the entry to the tunnel to get to the next spot in the course. I hope that makes sense.

ParticipantAlso I just wanted to say thanks for all the feedback over the summer. I’m feeling slightly depressed now that CAMP is over – it’s kind of like going back to school – LAME. This has been a great class to keep up my motivation and skills to train. I will definitely be back next year! I’ll see you later in September at On The Run 🙂

ParticipantToday I ran Lesson 4 Jumpers Course 3 with both dogs. I did the same type of thing and combined Lesson 4 and Lesson 5 concepts. I filmed the full 8 minute walk thru. However, the final full speed run thru I filmed after I put both dogs away. It was on a separate video and I accidentally deleted it before I was able to edit. So, most of the walk thru is there, but not the final walk. I also cheated a bit and attempted a second try with Emmie. She missed the second jump and went into the wrong tunnel entry so I restarted. Kippy took the backside of 16 very literally and went around the teeter to get to the backside of the jump. Thought it was maybe a fluke but I broke it down after and he did it a few more times LOL.
I didn’t feel completely on my A game tonight as I’m pretty exhausted from this week but I wanted to get at least one more post in!

ParticipantI figured I better get my last post in before CAMP ends. It’s been a busy last few weeks with a trial, seminar, and then herding for past 4 days so I’m pretty wiped. Last Wednesday Julie came over and we were able to set up the jumpers course from Lesson 4. I kind of combined the concepts of Lesson 4 and Lesson 5 together for this and my next post. I recorded my 8 minute walk through and then I ran it once like I was at a trial (fight for it concept). I ended up only running Emmie on Jumpers Course 1 because my legs were absolutely dead. I had just got back from an Orange Theory workout where I sprinted for 7 – 1 minute sessions in a 30 minute treadmill block. So, in other words, I could not run like I normally do. She completely missed a jump (and I did see that she missed it in my periphery) but I just kept running the course. I think normally I could have been further up the line on that, but not that day LOL.

ParticipantHere’s Lesson 4 Sequences for Success Course 3. During the walk thru I kept having a hard time remembering 3-4. I ran Kippy first and did have a slight hesitation there but messed up 6 to backside of 7. I thought I didn’t push out to it far enough but when I was editing I deceled much too suddenly (trying to rush too much). When I looked at my last run thru I was turning too early on that backside. We tried it a second time and got it on the second attempt. Emmie got it first attempt.

ParticipantI am going to keep bugging you about the connection because it really is the last piece of the puzzle for you and both dogs. Are you going to the US Open in November?
Please do because I think connection is definitely a struggle point for me. When I lose them on course I know it’s the connection. And if I haven’t obsessed enough on a course I turn to look quickly where I’m going as well. I’m on a little vacation this week and then this coming weekend I’m at a seminar. I’ll practice this at the seminar. And I plan on finishing up this lesson too and really focusing on the walk pieces. I need to practice the obsessing, verbals, and only walking the decision points/hard parts.
If the Open doesn’t get cancelled, we are planning on being there!
On a separate note, Emmie and I practiced our transition to trial games this past weekend at a trial. She seemed so much more relaxed (probably because she has trained at this facility). We played the pattern game and I got her out early before all the runs to acclimate. Much more focused on the startline (there were walls but still). Even outside the ring she was more comfortable even though this place is very cramped for walking around. I was very happy with that. I was thinking the instant focus game would be better for this situation but she really liked the pattern game so I stick with that instead.

ParticipantHere’s Lesson 4 Sequences for Success Course 2. I felt distracted during the walk thru (next time I have to put Emmie away). I ran Emmie first and forgot where I was going between 6-7. Added in words I didn’t use during the walk thru (in-in) and forgot to use my backside word on 9. I didn’t feel like I did a good job on that for her. I did walk it again for about 2 minutes and I felt like I ran it better/more connected with the correct words. I didn’t include that here though. I then ran Kippy. He tends to explode off the start line so I think I lead out too much and wasn’t able to show any turn (stood still instead) then kept motion going and he went around the jump. I tried it from the start again. I didn’t re-walk it though. I mentally thought I needed to start with him more to show a change in direction. I think I showed the change in direction better but still seemed to lead out too far (even though I thought I was fixing that). Also, I did finally watch the whole video today. I hadn’t watched it yesterday. So my normal habit is to 1) walk dog path 2) pick handling choices based off that 3) walk handling 4) run at speed. I need to really focus on adding the verbals in now too. My weak point.

ParticipantHere is Emmie doing doing Part 1 of Lesson 2 Transition to Trials pattern game. We also revisited her instant focus wand thing for about a minute. I didn’t tape that. We did it in a new room in the house. I think I probably should have picked a different room for the second session because it’s got all the dog equipment in there and she was trying to do 2o2o while trying to touch the wand with her paw. LOL. Tomorrow i might take it on the road and go into town at a park or something instead. I was going to video that session and also any from the trial this upcoming weekend if I can.

ParticipantHere is Lesson 4 Sequences for Success Course 1. First link is the walk thru and then each dog has their own link for their runs. I ran Kippy right after this walk thru and I think it shows. I then had a dogwalk training session with Emmie and THEN ran the course with her. I got through it but it was not executed as well as Kippy’s. I think one thing I don’t do in training is really take the full time to walk through a course and that is where a lot of mistakes come from. When I actually take the time to fully walk a course like at a trial I do much better. However not fully walking it is a good exercise for me in itself.
