ParticipantIt is Dr. Segrara in Metairie, LA. Her clinic is called Natural Pet Care. I may have mispoke calling her a Behavior Vet. She has helped multiple friends in my area with their dog’s behavior problems.
My good friend had a sheltie that got scared at a dog trial from a loud noise. My friend could not get him in a trial ring for over 2 years. After Dr. Segrara helped him, he went on to get his MACH.
At the urging of this good friend, I contacted her.
I am so in hopes that she can get to the bottom of Gus’ issues.
Especially now that I am gaining knowledge of tools from this course to keep that all going in the right direction.dbenton
ParticipantYes, she said she thinks that is part of the puzzle. Not all of it. She said that all collies have a sensitivity to those meds. Border Collies are highly susceptible? She said from the videos, she thinks there is something neurological going on and that would be related to the Heartgard (heartworm medicine because of the ivermectin) and Nexgard (flea and tick, don’t know why on that one)?
If that is the case, taking him off of it is such a simple fix. I am sure willing to see if she is correct by removing those meds from his body. I know for myself, I am the poster child for adverse conditions to meds that everyone else can take and have no reaction to. I am in hopes this could help him. If you have any thoughts, please let me know. We are awaiting the bile acids profile results to see what else she thinks might be adding to his issues. I will keep you posted.-

ParticipantHey Bobbie-
I had my first consult with the Behavior Vet.
She looked at his last bloodwork, pulled in June.
She told me to take him off Heartgard and Nexgard. She feels although he is not showing seizures or physical symptoms, she said he is probably having neurological problems from those after watching his videos. She said it would take at least 90 days or more to clear that out of his system. She advised I put him on Sentinel for heartworms moving forward. I don’t know what the answer for fleas and ticks will be yet. We live on 20 acres that is partially wooded. We live in Florida, so the bugs really don’t get killed off in the winter. I do have a flock of 16 guinea fowl that are tick eating machines. 🙂 She saw some stuff in his bilirubin count that she felt needed more tests. We took him today and had bloodwork done for a bile acids test profile. I will wait to get that over to her and see what she says.
On a good note-
I went to my agility trainer this morning and was actually able to carry on a conversation with her between sequences and he just laid down. I think the pattern games, snuffle mat, etc… are helping him!dbenton

Yes, the reply above is the one. I was updating you about the Behavior Vet.dbenton
ParticipantGood Morning Bobbie-
I had my first phone consult with the Behavior vet in New Orleans on Saturday. She sees some issues with his bilirubin count. She has ordered a Bile Acids test profile. Possibly liver issues from high protein feed? I have an appointment with my local vet to get that done on Wed. She also said to take him off Heartgard and Nexgard. She said although I am not seeing drastic physical issues from them, she thinks there are neurological issues from those 2 that can be causing some of his behavior. She said it would take 90 days or longer for those to clear out, since he has been on those meds his whole life. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of some of this on the health side of things. Thank you for recommending that I go to a behavior vet. I am enjoying this course very much!dbenton

ParticipantGood Morning Bobbie-
I am in Florida. I have several friends that have gone to a vet in Metairie, LA for behavior problems, with great success. Dr. Segrara at Natural Pet Care. I contacted her yesterday and sent over Gus’ recent bloodwork, vaccine, records, videos, etc… I have a consult with her on Oct 8th. If I do not get some answers there, I will be emailing you to work with your vet. If I had known about your vets sooner, I would have been happy to work with them. Sorry!
OOPS on the superbowl game. I thought we were to find a repetitive line and take the bowls away. My misunderstanding. I will correct that and not be around the tunnel.
Yes on the sleeves. He will bite at a toy and either scratch me or get my hand/arm. I don’t feel it’s on purpose, but I am 64 and have that paper thin skin that cuts and bruises very easily.
I have done many hours with a toy on the ground and he has to wait for my release to “get it.” I am curious to see how he does with this activity when I repeat it. I’ve done a lot to keep him from coming at my hand for the toy. In hopes the escalation isn’t over the top. There are times when he gets escalated and does a run by me nip. Usually on my leg or rear end. NOT GOOD!
Thanks for your input!dbenton
