ParticipantI heard you might be coming to Babz again for a seminar. Have you set the date yet? I would love to go.

ParticipantThis camp was just what I needed to keep me training and learning over this long, hot summer. Thank you for all your help, encouragement, kindness and insight. Now I feel like I at least KNOW when to cue if I can get my voice and body to cooperate. I love the brake arms and exit line connection.
Thanks again for all you do.

ParticipantLast weekend’s trial was fun but he knocked a bar on each run and he didn’t want to do the weaves. I think the problems in the runs were caused by him stressing over the weaves. I had not been working on them lately, but I have now started back at about the beginning with 4 poles.
I had real problems figuring out how to do the hot topic in pkg 5. The only way I could be successful was if I started with jump 2.

ParticipantThank you so much for your awesome feedback! I knew I was in trouble when the walkthrough instructions included dog cues. I see now that I really need to work on connection and actually seeing what Bacon is doing. I’m at a trial this weekend so I will have seven runs to work on connection during my walkthroughs for Bacon. Hopefully I will be able to do it in my runs too.

ParticipantThank you for the feedback and the proofing videos.
The first video is from yesterday and is of sequence 1 and 2, package 4.
The second video is from today and is sequence 3.
I don’t remember getting so tired from walking a course – too much thinking and getting lost I guess.Eileen Ewins

ParticipantI forgot to use verbals here. I will start working those conditioning exercises to see if that helps with his bar knocking.

ParticipantHere is this morning’s crazy session.

Participant“Train with a toy in your hand at home all the time so he habituates to it.”
No problem. It’s was much more fun for both of us when I used a tug.
“Is he in a group class?”
We have been in a weekly group class since Nov. 1, 2022 – the day after I brought him home from the breeder. We have also been in seminars and in a few other group classes along the way. I stopped going to all classes last May after the instructor of one of the classes suffered heat stroke during our class. Then I signed up for an online jumping class and this camp for the summer. Now I wish I had taken your online max pup series with him.
Here is our work from this morning. When watching the video I noticed that I used “around” for the backside instead of “check check” for collection. I guess it’s going to take a while for me to remember to use the new cue.

ParticipantThank you so much! Tracy, you are the BEST!
From your comments, I feel better already about what I need to do. In addition to leading out with more connection, handling more aggressively, and cuing sooner and bigger, I need to work more on being able to run ahead of contacts and weaves.
I have been training with food instead of a toy and have not been doing FEO because he loves to tug and gets too distracted when I run with a toy. He keeps an eye on me and knocks bars hoping that it will soon be time to tug. I don’t know what to do about that.
I was able to set up for Live 2 this morning and hope to start working on that tomorrow. Thanks for extending the end date for the class. I’m hoping to at least get through all the skills while I still have your help. Then I plan to work on the courses.

ParticipantI tried the backside with the blind, as you suggested, and it worked great. The rest of my work last week was aweful, and looking at the videos I couldn’t even remember what I was trying to do.
Here are two courses I ran yesterday that I could use your critique on.The first is Open Standard. He broke his stay on the dw and I usually make him do it over when he does that, but I was a bad handler this time. The first tunnel was a wrong course and so was the second dog walk and the jump he took instead of the teeter. How should I handle discriminations between obstacles when, for example, the turn is to the right and there are two possible obstacles in that direction such as jump, turn right and choose between the dw and A-frame or between two different jumps? No problem with my slower dogs, but a different game with Bacon.
He ran the correct course in nov JWW but took three tries to get the 6 weaves by the back wall. How should I have lead out to help prevent bars 2 and 3 from dropping?

ParticipantThese are from last week:

ParticipantHe was supposed to take #4 jump, then the right hand side of the tunnel, then take #4/6 again. I thought afterwards that maybe I should have sent him to the jump with him on my left and then turned him “back” to the tunnel.
I definitely need rear cross work.
Yes, he self-released the teeter twice. He is usually good about holding it when I remember to say “target”.
I’m starting to use verbals with Ivan now (but not on his running contacts) to help me remember to use them with Bacon.
Thanks for your help with timing and getting me t use verbals.Eileen Ewins
ParticipantThanks for your great feedback!
