ParticipantThank you! Not sure what a snuffle mat is (something to smear peanut butter over?).

ParticipantI’d like to know more about fawning. Forrest stresses when new people come to the house…but he doesn’t attack them, freeze or run away…he over greets them. We have just started AKC agility, and he greets the judge and also ring crew (though he has been less persistent in doing so and does come back to the course when called EXCEPT at the end…then he doesn’t want to leave the ring).

ParticipantWhoosh! Lots to take in, like figuring out switch away v threadle. I will study your comments and work on improvements
He will be 3 on March 16 but he is still a baby in so many ways. I am considering auditing the Got FACE as he is def fitting the description of “the dogs with some distraction “!

ParticipantThanks Tracy! I am still trying to see how well he listens to my verbals and so not moving that much. Will definitely get myself more in gear tomorrow!

ParticipantThanks Tracy
When I follow your guidance regarding esp adding distance, am i to attempt to rely on the verbal (tunnel or over) or am i ok with adding body language?

ParticipantToday Forrest went to a run through at Walnut Hill Farm in Reva, VA and did VERY well. There were several parts of the course today that used sequences similar to what we are learning in this course, including at the END, a 180 to the final jump (I had to send him to the final jump which he nailed each time). Forrest was awesome…fast and attentive and we only had one off course per try and that was because I was late in telling him what to do. SOOOOOO, although I had every intention of trying what you suggest above, I will have to wait til tomorrow as we are both done for the day. I think it will take me the whole 2 weeks to get through all four hours of the first LIVE, but that’s OK.
I have set up the next set of sequences (with the tunnel) also.

ParticipantForrest did one threadle for me today then refused to play at all. I think he is feeling pooky and/or perhaps hurt himself and doesn’t want to jump. Will try again tomnorrow.

ParticipantThank you Cindi! I used your advice and it worked.

ParticipantTracy, I frequently do use a tennis ball and it is the best treat for him really EXCEPT when he decides he doesn’t want to be a retriever anymore (Weims are definitely NOT labradors…). This morning in the shade we did as you suggested (but I tossed a light colored treat) and he did very well! No video as I didn’t lug it with me thinking it was going to be too hot and a bust…silly me.
Looking forward to package 3 and a break in the weather. Love the evolution exercises! Too hot to run the courses…but I will!

ParticipantThank you Tracy for the additional ideas! I will try placing the tennis ball at pole 5!
On the layering, getting him running (momentum) pays off! Interestingly enough, he seems to like running clockwise rather than counterclockwise! We had cloud cover this morning (tripod was in the house), so we attempted a layer or two. Finally did get him to go all the way around (clockwise) but no video today darnitall.

ParticipantYes, I have a set of 12 channel weaves…included them in the standard course closed, but perhaps I will add the wing and open them up as you suggest.
Have used a manners minder (have two of them) and he charges right to them. Best for me is to have a human at the end who rewards when the task is completed correctly. I will get the tripod out and ask Joe to not video but to reward only when Forrest weaves correctly.
He does know how to weave…just not independently as yet. Normally when I practice with him, I actually stop him far enough away from weaves to be in the “fault free” zone, then guide him through. We have not even trialed at the NOVICE level yet as he is too distracted by everyone else involved in a trial…so he needs to mature mentally. But that’s OK…we have lots of skills to learn a lot better ;}

This link is to the video where I sat in the chair with the reward and Forrest sat there staring at me.
So this is where we are…cannot sit, have to move. Not sure how to get to where we need to be…me just asking him to weave AND make the proper entry.gacwofva
ParticipantYes, he is getting the entry and does one pole after that and then quits! Lazy boy. I will take a video of it later today…and will post this evening.
How was he trained on weaves? I took a class with Lisa Selthofer and tried to teach them her way, but then I tried 2X2s gradually adding more. He does know how to weave with me moving alongside him…but we never graduated to “around the clock” training since that seemed to try his patience/interest in weaving.
I tried the tunnel/jump discrimination challenge the other day and he did it correctly the first time then took the tunnel after that every time. So I am definitely going to practice tunnel jump discrimination tomorrow morning when that is in the shade and WILL video that too.
