ParticipantI know you would talk to me about fixing, but there was no way to keep going. She was far ahead with no place to go. I didn’t call her to me, she came to and when she doesn’t know where to go she jumps until I give her information. So I just sent her around what was closest to get her back onto a line. I promise I’m not fixing. I didn’t care what she took (the tunnel was not the plan in fast, but she drove so hard on the line to the last jump behind it, I just went with it)-but she did have to have instructions!

ParticipantThis is my 3rd weekend in a row running Stacey FEO in a multitude of locations. Just getting her exposure and figuring out her sweet spot. We did NADAC, AKC ACT and this weekend regular AKC with just one run each day. Small 1 ring events, low key atmosphere, 3 closed in sides.
I’ve learned. She needs an energy burn in the AM. Just enough to take the vibrating edge off. But not too much. I’ve taken in the toy some, but she won’t really play with it. She is getting better and better about focusing on me.
And she loves this game.
As we head into the big trialing season in Alaska, I’m going to be mostly working on her non agility behaviors like relax while other dogs run-or let’s be realistic-just focus on me. And maybe not bark at everything you see. She needs better handle on that before I can take her into more open environments.
Like you told me before-she needs a lot of connection. I’m going to need a bigger toolbox with her and much more proofing of verbals and distance than I had with Jackie.
And my sit stay is going to be so important.
We now no longer have snow on the ground so looking forward to walking into my back yard!

ParticipantFeo!
Run 1 was a complete disaster. I also carried her in-WHY?? Set her down and shot her into a tunnel (also WHY???). But I learned and the more I trusted my training the better it got!
Here was feo Run #4.
Wind in your hair, smoke the momma all in play. She needs much more training and commitment for the speed she has, but I’m so excited for what this girl is gonna do.
Jerri Gillean
ParticipantSome wind in your hair. Added a 2nd jump.
First 3 rounds I had toy in my hand. Then it was placed. ‘Go’ is Jackie’s weave word, so I’m using ‘sha’

ParticipantThanks for the feedback on the area. I need to do more climate controlled (or temperate) trials and they are just not available in the NW. I can’t spend all day in horse arenas starting at 20 degrees and warming up to 40.
I’m def considering east/southeast, so always looking for areas and access to more temperate cliamte and easier driving to big events. Plus being closer to my mid-west family and AL friends. I’ll look up more in those areas!
About fixing-I think it was you that told me to stop fixing Meisje’s mistakes-it never fixed our problems, but sure made things better! And that was 8 or 9 years ago-so the several years ago was before then!!! 🙂

ParticipantThanks much. I didn’t realize until I watched the video of how much correcting I did. BAD JERRI.
I am very happy with her sit in a distracting environment. I think that is her first public off leash sit stay!
My trial was cancelled this weekend (not NADAC), so i’ll get some training in. We just got 4 inches of SNOW!
PS I’m moving. Where should I go?

ParticipantHowdy!
I took Stacey to a run through today. So a few dogs wandering around, the dog walk very close to the ring edge. She is quite motion sensitive, so she was pretty wound up. Let’s be honest, wound up is her normal state.
I had not watched this week’s resilience game-but that is **generally** what I was going for. I know I have some missed steps, but this activity we do at home all the time. Play with the toy, do a thing.
This is two 2 minute sessions. She called at my time at 1 minute and I knew it was time to finish. The process of getting the leash led to some out of the ring distraction. She certainly can go through those ring gates and did not, so that’s good.
Round 2 went better, but she really wanted food and I really wanted her on the toy. It took throwing the toy to get her on it, but she didn’t do a victory lap which she usually does.
So a few comments then questions. I’m being very thoughtful about this as I think it will be Stacey’s #1 challenge for trialing.
To work on (my observation):
1. The trick/reinforcement routine for warmup.
2. Food/toy reinforcement tradeoff
3. proofing throwing the leash
4. Write out the plan for startline routine
5. Some leash on/off proofing (take off tug, put on tug)Questions (other than what else do you see that I should work on?):
1. So she is clearly very high. That is pretty much her only state. She jumps up and bites at my clothing. Help?
2. How can a 9 lb dog make so much noise in a tunnel???Jerri Gillean
ParticipantHere is serp & toy races
I think serp is looking good. I def didn’t set her up for success when I switched sides-but her problem solving! Wow. Smart little sucker.
I’ve done toy races since she was a baby. Some keep away too. I realize it takes me a while to get into frame, but I promise I’m running. I was actually holding her and setting her down. She has zero problems with smoke the momma.
🤣Next up I’m going to work on some of the prop handling. I have done any of that since class, continue with stays and start the RDW foundation games since I can start that at home. Mostly this paragraph was a note to myself. I’ve been going back through the class material trying to pick up what I’ve missed.
Jerri Gillean
ParticipantWe are going to do AKC league here. I think that will be a good sub out for
Class. She isn’t running, but I should be able to take her out.Jerri Gillean
ParticipantUpdated!

ParticipantHere is some stay work today. This was my first time doing stays with food, so need some hand proofing-but she got the idea quick.

Participanthmmm. . .Lots to think about and process here.
I do agree my question was not about decompression, but watching a decompression video did trigger my question. Sometime the brain makes a leap.
I’ve been there with a wildly distracted dog, who found very little value in agility. I did so many things wrong with her, but the thought of waiting to go into the ring until I’m 100% sure my dog will not be distracted/aroused/stressed means I will never trial. Because I NEVER will know. After Meisje’s career, I just don’t have that confidence that I will ever know. I feel like I could have a pretty good idea, I could be pretty sure, but its just a different ball game.
And I’d rather pay $20 to go in on leash, tug and enjoy and run out with success (which is ultimately my goal) than invest another year of training feel confident then to only realize I need a different approach. Honestly, it would break my heart. Stacey is a very different dog in the conformation ring than she is outside of it. I had done a ton of foundation and work and she stood outside the ring barking, then went inside the ring and did her job.
My goal is never to have her run off, I just want predictability if she does. I have lots more work until she goes into the ring to sequence. I know that. I just think she needs a lot of FEO time.
Jerri Gillean
ParticipantI have a question about decompression. Or really more your thoughts…
I was scribing at a trial and I saw a woman use FEO to take her dog out on a leash to the judge one time then to bar setters the next time.
She said he dog was struggling with people in the ring and I thought it was just a brilliant idea. Her dog was not stressed by people, but excited by them.
I know this will be something I need to work through with Stacey. I have entered her strictly to start working through this in a trial environment.
I haven’t really done much Premack with her, but I think this might be the way to go. With judges & bar setters. I would practice ahead of time so she really understand the go visit cue.
I don’t really stick to the CU concept of sacred space because where I practice is also a place they can run. I DO stick with the idea that I am ending the training session, so there is a difference between playing with the momma and doing whatever your dog self desires.
I just feel like it I KNOW she is going to go to a person on course, I’d rather cue that after an obstacle or two or some tugging and have her return based on a pattern rather than having her brain explode and make that choice for herself.
Thoughts??

ParticipantMerry Christmas!! For Christmas Stacey gave me SERPS!
So nice to finally have a place to train. It was a journey to become a member of the club & get access, but an Alaska MUST!
You saw my rocking horses to turn and burn video-that is going super well. I’m just playing with handling, commitment & counter motion & distance now. It’s a good burn off the energy exercise for her. And great practice for me.
I’m so pleased with how these serps are going. We had one failure each side, the first time I think. But I’m just super impressed. Dang she is so smart. I’ve started adding motion.
what I really need now is stays. So I’ve started working on that. I can do that at home too.
Warning-very unhappy terrier in the background.
Jerri Gillean
ParticipantAlso-we did another practice at the facility. She loses focus after 1 min in a bigger environment. So in public places I’ll be timing myself to 50 seconds and ending the session.
Meisje at her age gave me 15 or 20
Seconds, so I’ll take it!!-
