ParticipantI will do more work to try to increase value of MM separately from this exercise…I need to do that anyway for contact training etc.
He is a good tugger yes.
He does independent back up great, have done a ton of perch work and platform stuff. I do have concerns about his structure and stability however. Hoping it’s just his age…He is just learning to sit square and pop up. Not easy for him.
Yes I saw the toy was not ideal but that and my motion I added early to see if he would run through the little grid.
Haven’t done cavelletti with him. What height and spacing do you recommend?
When you say big giant hollee roller about what diameter are you thinking?

ParticipantGame One: set point
I will post videos but have questions on the first game, jump set point. Robbie isn’t too excited with MM, loped and trotted to it. He has been introduced to it awhile ago but hasn’t been too excited by it. Have tried a few different food options in it but it doesn’t matter…Toys and motion are more his jam when I want drive or speed.I tried with toy on ground…but then he is diving for it.
I also adjusted the distance between jumps from 6’ to 5’ (he is 20” tall but kind of petite especially for a male). The shorter distance helped. He may need it even closer. I also added 4” bar to second jump to encourage him to jump and not just trot over the bumps.
I’ve done speed grids with him before and he bounced through a row of 6 no problem…spaced closer but he was younger/smaller then too.
So now I am not sure whether to try again with toy on ground and see if he levels out?-

Participantyes all of that makes sense. and in truth I also will bring up my outside arm on difficult jump threadles so it’s not perfectly on an open shoulder. Kai’s threadle slice verbal (in in) is actually one of her stronger verbals but still..
Robbie is so easy I have to remember to go slow…we are at the obvious end of straight tunnel in 2 sessions. Not on verbal but working on that too.
And he completely gets the threadle slice with the strike a pose…dives in between me and stanchion, over bump to his toy..no more hand touch. I had to slow down though because he was self releasing when he saw me go into strike a pose. Did more stay work etc and he’s better now. Will keep throwing his toys back intermittently to support his attention on stays.

ParticipantAnother question on sending to the backside:
Your feet stay parallel to dogs path even for the send?
My way of cueing this until verbal is established is one step pointed to dogs line to the backside then can run parallel after the step…
Comments please! Other top trainers like yourself are teaching the one step to dogs line…so now I am confused.
Kerry Levin
Participantok that makes sense too.
I rarely just take the toy and go back to work. always fun tugging or toy exchange and tug when he brings it back, or yummy food then more tugging.Kerry Levin
ParticipantI am a little confused. To me running around time is self rewarding. I am not sure how that is going to get me a dog with a reliable quick retrieve?
I am a bit frustrated because mine is not a baby anymore… he is 8.5 months! yikes! I normally have a much better retrieve and recall by this age… not sure what’s different with this one.

Participantok so put the victory lap on cue.. I can try that!
Kerry Levin
ParticipantPicture of box details/size etc when you have a chance please.
Kerry Levin
ParticipantRetrieves/ still getting lots of victory laps when out in open space…good retrieves in confined indoor spaces of various size…tips?
Kerry Levin
ParticipantYes that makes sense.
I think I missed the first step of flatwork on the strike a pose for serp and threadle and went to more advanced. Do you know which week the first strike a pose were introduced? I want to revisit that to solidify his understanding.
He is doing well but I can see he has tendency to bypass the hand touch and just do the thing…oops.
He understands the MM but hasn’t learned to not go directly to it so before I use it with multiple behaviors prior to release to MM I need to break that down.
He does understand to leave toy on ground now–at least in some circumstances (tunnel work we’ve been doing, eg).Kerry Levin
ParticipantYes was referring to serp/threadle–sorry.
And yes that makes sense!
Not sure if it was mentioned but if I stand still on serp exercise, can I reward dog with either food or toy in my off hand (ie, not the hand they touch, the one in front in direction dog is supposed to go)?On threadle exercise, does reward have to be preplaced or can cookie/toy be tossed to landing side after dog touches my outstretched hand?
Kerry Levin
Participantalso wondering about the instructions to stand still instead of stepping forward after dog does the nose touch? is it for shaping the behavior/independence?
Kerry Levin
ParticipantYes that helps! thanks.
Ok at about 0.15 you have your outside arm up…why?
Kerry Levin
ParticipantOk so you are calling wrap like a post turn/360.
Yes would like to see vid if you have them!
Thanks.
BTW did the backside games for first time with Robbie today and he nailed it!
Do you have vid showing how fast to move/position yourself to show the dog the serp line after they go around the backside of the wing?Kerry Levin
ParticipantYes that makes sense. Thanks!
