ParticipantThank you so much for your comments. Really helpful at getting us back on track (and I somehow messed up my calendar and was panicking that the course was about to end – much calmer now I know we have an extra 3 weeks to wrap up!).
I don’t have video but have been doing extremely short tug sessions and then tossing down great treats (I had just been using kibble but now have freeze-dried liver and other yummy things, and the issue was only with toys, never food) and it’s gone well. I’m also tossing handfuls of treats during potty time and today had a breakthrough – brother Loki was behaving like his usual crazy zoomy self outside and I made the mistake of taking her on the leash to potty. She did initially want to go play with him, but I was amazed she quickly turned to the treats I tossed and then was able to ignore him – yay). I also just registered for power patterns – not for competition at this stage but I figure it can help us all!
Some wrap and turns videos:
Wraps – this makes me think so a lot of handler errors plus it went too long: https://youtu.be/_AlRHhdz6rsTurns: these were all short sessions with short breaks between – some ‘wait, what am I doing now’ moments, but I think she has the idea down. Tried adding the prop but she had a lot of value for it: https://youtu.be/ZXnjCgYNxI8, https://youtu.be/3lxe_K9-TkE, and https://youtu.be/DlMDkyQr8Jc
Looking forward to seeing what you think. Thanks, Jane.

ParticipantHi Tracy. I realize we are almost at the end of the course and I’ve not posted in weeks. I’ll just say it’s not been going well but Tina talked me off the ledge and told me to get you some videos! So here goes.
I went away for a week and when I came back I seem to have lost all connection with Brisket (we had some issues before I went away but not this bad). I’ve just been trying to get connected again but even going out to potty is hard. Previously, I had used pattern games to get her out the door somewhat calmly and then tossing treats in the grass, but she is so distracted by the birds that she doesn’t even look at me for me to begin the game. Tugging is a nightmare – she gets super over-excited (you’ll see in the one video) so I either avoid it or have to try to be really calm. I figure I need to get her to work with me before I can work on any of the handling games. These videos are simple words, patterns and also trying out the retrieve. Didn’t go well. I know my mechanics are horrible and my energy is usually too high so I’m trying to work on that, but some ideas for how to help Brisket work and not get too excited would be really helpful. Thanks!
For these sessions I made the training area smaller, which worked better.
Words and patterns: Food always works: https://youtu.be/4Kh6FePYE08 and then https://youtu.be/93KZ2uAWI0Y
I had her attention from the previous sessions so tried a tug and retrieve (toss the toy and back away and see if she brings it towards me): https://youtu.be/D8qhiHXPhzQ. You’ll see she got over-excited and started lunging at me. I tried to be calm but it freaks me out (my clothes have so many holes). She was able to sit and then carry on, so this was better than the last time this happened. I’m not sure the best way to avoid this and react.
After the above session I had her go in the ball pit (here’s a short ball pit video form the other day https://youtu.be/zC92rCHI888 and tossed in a few cookies for her to snuffle/chill. Seemed to work. I then tried the toy pick up part of the retrieve, but I was losing attention at that point: https://youtu.be/Z_NP7Lq0C9I
It’s not all a disaster – some fun from this weekend – I think this qualifies as goat tricks: https://youtu.be/SHvpOJLQA84
Thanks for any feedback you have,

ParticipantHappy weekend! Great comments – thanks! We’ve made some progress. Still doing week 3 stuff, so have some catching up to do. She’s VERY ‘hot zone’ or ‘get on things’ focused. Am trying to treat and add duration, but she just keeps getting on anything that looks like it might earn her some cookies. How do I differentiate between random objects and actual hot zones? For example, I put the towel down to stop the treats rolling under the couch – she slammed her butt down on it and looked at me expectantly and won’t get off until she gets a treat.
Crazy backing up. I had a ton of videos that I never got around to posting. All were the same – Brisket coming forward and backing sideways and avoiding whatever mat I had behind her. But this morning decided to try brand new stable object on a slant and when that worked, I got this (I forgot to remove the riser on the bottom – it was VERY wobbly): https://youtu.be/xRqFQfCbXmw. Definitely didn’t scare her with this – she kept trying to get back on it lol. Had to put it away.
Wing wraps turn and burn. I had moved to a wooden wine rack but then realized something softer would be better, so this is a new object she’s just seeing today (and I had to cut the video short – boobs were flashing): https://youtu.be/TTWY974S3ds
Prop games. Parallel and rear (kind of): https://youtu.be/B9Il9HorKu0
Prop games. Counter motion: https://youtu.be/ofYvFPNlH2sjaread
ParticipantLots of things to think about. Thanks! Another video dump. Struggling with getting distance to the object with wraps, and backing up is very sideways. She has no problem getting on things that move or are noisy but getting her to stay on is a challenge (she’s so busy). Am (Tina too) worried her motivation for food (she goes crazy just for her basic kibble) is reducing her tug drive. Apparently, I wave food around a lot, so trying to be aware of that. I think these sessions went a little better. Kept the sessions shorter, too.

ParticipantHello, and many thanks for previous comments.
We are behind – still working on week 1 games and trying to get those right before we move on. Struggling with distractions in the basement. New toys are on order, so hopefully those will help? Should I move to somewhere less distracting first, and then move to basesment with exercises?

Send to thing (will have to add later – reached you tube upload limit). Thanks!

ParticipantTracy, thanks for these comments – super helpful. The reinforcement strategies/getting her to let go of the toy are really working (this will be great when she goes cujo on us in the evenings too). She’s on a leash in some of these videos the which is getting in the way – I need to set up some barriers as it’s a larger basement area.
Here goes….

ParticipantApologies for the video dump. I sat on these because there’s something wrong with all of them but then realized I’m never going to get going if I don’t get going!
Question: the 2-minute guide for training sessions – does that include all the revving up at the beginning or just the brain-thinking stuff?
Hope these links work:
