    volume dial versus all business
hmm I’m not sure which dog I have here… I think in practice, he can need volume dial
With our limited trial experience, he was plastering himself down when we walked in like we’ve been doing this forever
    Should I just rehearse both?

also love your leggings from the releases video!

Be chill enough to let him answer your questions one at a time 🙂

What week do we cover human chill? I think I need a remedial course

I worked cookie less pattern games today. I need to edit the video. I’m a bit unclear on what the difference is between that and remote reinforcement? Are they interchangeable?

    Cookie free pattern games

Thank you for the footage of HSM! She does look worried by the faux ring gating for sure. While I see she’s able to do the cookie free spins, how do you decide how long to work that session before taking the leash off and then going for the remote reinforcer?

I think I tend to panic in situations and either pull back and give up or start to throw the kitchen sink at him.

Okayyyy we are continuing our quest for calm… fake calm…
Maybe just like Luke warm is our goal.

So this whole breathing thing. I am pretty convinced you made it up. I won’t be taking further questions at this time. Thanks

But really. So because we struggled so much to find ourselves early in life, I did a ton of trick shaping with the red one. We love it. It’s our jam. I love shaping tricks. He gets really fucking happy for it.
We are out here cold. It’s 75 degrees and he starts open mouth panting super quick. I can’t appreciate his calming deep breaths when he’s panting!

Anyway. Here’s me eating snacks, huffing Chex mix and moving a shoe. Maybe dog training?

Also pro tip. Don’t buy these as dog treats. They are irresistible.

For him, that heeling game is like engagement Viagra (a big YES!)

so is moving towards a baring dog in an xpen. They are all really hard for him!

It’s funny because this has been our training set up for almost two years now. Hello panini… I never noticed how MUCH pressure it was until your the end of your verbals class and he couldn’t wrap towards the ex pen. Blew my mind. He’s such a sensitive soul. I really like to think that his hobbies would be working for ocean clean up and poetry if he were a human.

For the krippie games, I feel like I’m the presence of the K words, sometimes toy play is hard. I need to work the arousal with food and transition to toys. I should probably go back to the food pouch in the first weeks to try that.
Also I need to make rewarding from my hand better because in dirt places, he doesn’t like dirt covered cheese!

Or, you can play the volume dial game – and if he loves heeling, then heeling an go into the volume dial game and it can totally be a trick you use on the way to the line!

As far as keeping him in the higher end of the arousal curve going in, do you think it’s too boring? What should I do to really get him going?

    Happy Easter!🐇
I meant to edit this footage last night but fell asleep. Whoops!
So we played these games in very close proximity to the pool. Very challenging. I took the two leash advice. Pro tip- the second leash only works if you hold onto it 🙈. We had one joy lap but I learn quickly.

Very happy with what he’s working here. I can see that it’s hard because there’s a lot of shaking off and calming signals in some areas.

I do a lot of heeling games with him because he FUCKING LOVES them but need to work on varying it up.

Before the permission to swim… what game is he playing so the swimming is used as both a kryptonite-level distraction and high value reinforcement?

So I’m glad you brought this up because I do struggle with order of operations here.

If I bring him in the yard on leash and work my on leash engagement games, these are good. The second I let him off leash, he will run to the pool and slip through the fence. He WILL NOT swim without me. Although he does just enjoy obsessing over the pool.
This sequence of events tends to really frustrate me.
If I bring him in and work engagement and then go to the pool or just start directly with a swim, I have a much more attentive dog.
How should I shape this better because it’s obviously is our kryptonite.

Pool raises his arousal universally and I’ve used it as a tool or maybe a crunch for awhile now.

That being said, I can get him to work without the first swim, he may end up in the pool area but no swim. It does just seem like more of a fight and I don’t like to get frustrated because then I’m a crap trainer 🙈.

    Remote reinforcers

This video is long. Feel free to skip some. We are in Carrie’s yard- which for whatever reason is our hardest training place.

One discussion I started with Carrie and feel like I should bring here is whether taking him right out of the car snd expecting him to work right away is too much? He swam for a minute or two before being brought into work. At all other training or trialing sessions (except my house too) I do a lot of on leash engagement first.

I also noticed the magnetic pull the DW kept having on him so switched to adding that in.

As a side note – he was ‘offering’ the barking so you can totally keep working to get it solidly on cue as a lovely trick to use outside the ring and on the way to the line

I was really surprised he would do it ringside at the trial since he’s not super confident and it’s new. Both of my dogs LOVE to demand bark so it should be easy to maintain. Now if only the quite work as well as the barking cue..

that is a leash? Wow! LOL!!!! To really get the leash tugging to be toy-like, use it in little sequences now! Having him play with it like this looked great! So you can do a wing wrap then the leash tug as the reward, then eventually the leash tug gets put into the remote reinforcement game (or in your pocket if you have a big enough pocket haha)</blockquote?
that is an obnoxious tug tied to a leash but I will work it. He knows to pick up his leash on cue. Should I integrate that as well? or since he prefers the active tug game, start there?

I intended to work the breathing games today. Then I threw thee frizz like three times and he was way too hot. I need to put a post it on my head to start there. Also it’s 84° and I’m in a sweatshirt- my thermostat is broken.

We played instant focus with my shoe based on the ideas in the zoom chat. He went straight to mouthing in the shaping session

Also worked leash tugging. How flipping awesome is this tug? It’s obnoxious large and heavy but if I were a dog, I’d totally bite it.

Now there’s enough material that I’m not sure where to continue to focus and since you usually recommend off days, is there stuff you think we should prioritize?
Kryptonite games are hard because I’m just have my yard, Carrie’s yard, and occasionally our new field

The first step is to identify your dog’s individual Kryptonite! There might be one or two things (or three things) but we must begin by listing them

#1 kryptonite is other dogs- he has both positive and negative emotions tied to them depending on the dog
#2 bodies of water- swimming pools, ponds, bird baths, stock tanks, puddles…anything wet
#3 good smells- usually bitch pee
    #4 dogs running
#5 loud or unexpected sounds- thunder, fireworks, loud bangs

Which games are the best for helping engage?
He really likes the cookie toss pattern game. He’s like I KNOW THIS ONE AND IT’S AWESOME. He really likes heeling with me for treats and tricks. We do play some look at that if it’s really bad.

What are her highest value reinforcements?
Swim swim, frizz, cheese, tugs. Swimming and cheese hold 100% for all environments, toy play varies by environment.

Which action tricks are most engaging?
backing up, barking seems to be now that he knows it, L and R spins, wooooosh for reward

I will also say, he was really aware of the ring crew walking into the ring- which I didn’t expect. He was happily wagging his tail so I think it was a good emotion but he’s not super into people not in his circle- so it was unexpected. He’s good with strangers but mostly just neutral unless cued to meet them.

Time to buy a fancy new tugger leash!

Are you saying I have to buy another leash? I adore his one now but also always need to shop… can I ever go back to the old leash? And leash maker recs?

I’ve worked some on leash tugging and it’s just not his favorite. Would this be a place to use premacks principle? I haven’t done it often but did do it with Callie. She’s an awful body slammer and the way she gets to go outside and chase the other dogs is by carrying a toy. I was still really new into dog training and had no idea what I was doing or even remember how I trained this but it works!
I’m thinking leash tugging to release to a pool? Or if there’s a way better and or easier – I love easy- way HMU

For the run – be sure to practice putting the leash down or tossing it away for when you are no longer allowed to carry it

Shunnnn the non believer Charlie. Shunnn
Jk this was a security blanket I was hanging onto. I was most worried about the end of the run and surprisingly it went the smoothest each time. He was a bit too high for that first run but did great all the others. Could it be because I practice this often? Nahh
But also AKC did make it a permanent rule that you can run with your leash in your pocket, falling wayyy down your pants so you look like you’re wearing a 💩 diaper, or otherwise your person (maybe not their fancy verbiage. I’m paraphrasing.)

Ugh poor Fever! What did you do to redirect him? We can work on things to get him to recover faster when that happens.

Reeled him in like a fish, spun in a circle exactly two times and shoved cheese in his face. We were in management at that time 😅.
