ParticipantThe last 2 sequences from the 4 Corners setup. This was fun and both of us learned a lot š

ParticipantQuestion about the Threadle wrap setup? Is the setup map correct for what is in the video? I set this up this afternoon and I double checked it against the map but it doesnāt feel like what Iām seeing in the video, specifically the 2nd jump after the tunnel, the one after the wrap jump. In the video it looks more in line with the wrap jump and on the map itās more off set? Does my question make sense? Maybe itās just an optical illusion in the video because of camera placement?

Participant4 Corners, Sequences 3 and 4. I included the whole session in this video, including all the in between. First rep on Sequence 3 I was thinking more about my handling (get there for the blind) and not enough about what Sly was doing⦠too early on the blind from 5 to 6. Really NO need to rush, the layer made it super easy to get there, but my head still said GO! GO!
Sequence 4, shouldāve rewarded after 4 on the first rep. He had a little bit of a question and I missed the opportunity for that unexpected reward and helping the learning ā¹ļø I really liked Bobbi and Dr. Murphyās recent webinar about reward/learning/motivation. Thinking about reward less like traditional reward and more about how it motivates ā¦. thatās definitely interesting!! And the concept of how learning happens when the reward/lack of reward doesnāt match the expected reward. So interesting. Anywayā¦.in the rep where he didnāt go out to 4 I was so in my head thinking about timing of the verbal go and jump, forgot all about connecting to the dog š³
Decided that I have 2 goals for Summer Campā¦..practice those verbals so that I can use the verbals and still stay connected to Sly and be more funā¦.less studious, more fun!Kim Tees
ParticipantWarning…..massive video dump! First 3 Pop Outs from the Standard Course and Sequences 1 and 2 from the 4 Corners Skill set. Pop Out 1 and 2 are from Monday, Pop Out 3 is from this morning. These were fun!
Pop Out 1: I did the left wing of #1 first cause I thought it would be the “easiest” and my goal for this rep was one and done. Success š Then played with the right wing, which that change went fine but we then had problems getting the backside @4. Two failures, stopped and watched video and I couldn’t really tell why it was happening, so when in doubt increase connection and we got it :0 Happy with my choice from 4 to the end, don’t like my orchestra conductor arms at the threadle wrap. Thoughts/suggestions?
Pop Out 2: This one had a lot of the stuff that we do well š Tried 2 options….. Had a moment of Oh crap! What am I supposed to be doing on the 2nd one but got it done.
Pop Out 3: A good demo of the value of releasing on the behavior verbal other than your release verbal. š I haven’t gone there with Sly (at least not yet) because I’ve made a little bit of a mess out of his startline and release and haven’t wanted to add the additional factor of being able to release on various verbal cues. My fix was not lead out as far, and use more motion and that seemed to clear it up pretty nicely, I think.
Sequence 1 and 2 from the 4 Corners Skill Set:
Sequence 1 went well, Sequence 2 not as much. I think my setup made Sequence 2 harder than it had to be (tight spacing, into the cluttered space, I initially had a wingless jump….) but I think that even if those things hadn’t been part of it that this was still more difficult for us than Sequence 1 and I’m not sure I totally understand why. I’m sure that the difference of the angle of the 2nd jump in both sequences is a factor but again, not totally sure what it is about it….the line it sets for the dog?
It’s good to be back!

ParticipantThanks for the clarification on the verbal release, but no verbal look cue. Got it now! And makes total sense.
Have a great weekend! We’re off to my 50th high school class reunion today. How the H___ did I get this old!!!! HAHAHA!!!!

ParticipantWe’ve worked with this skill previously, but not in awhile and we don’t use it anywhere except in training or maybe in class……run mostly AKC and some USDAA these days mostly because it’s what’s available within a reasonable drive from home. But it’s really fun to train these skills!!!!!
And thank you for your thoughts on the whole verbal thing and specifically the “look”. It’s interesting how the sport and verbals continue to evolve. Best advice I think I’ve gotten so far on verbals was “when running a course, if using the verbal screws up your ability to be able to execute the physical cues, forget the verbal and do the physical cues right”. I’ve paired mine down to a few that I really do need because of straight tunnels, running dogwalk, backsides and a few that are beneficial and for whatever reason were relatively easy to teach and for me to use. š And good, bad or indifferent at this point they are relative to my position. It’s the only way I’ve been able to successfully use them on the run, at least so far.
“so I donāt want to add a verbal that might potential cause confusion about what the release is”
Are you in all situations back to only releasing on a single release cue or in certain situations, when the default isn’t what you want – frontside/backside of a jump sometimes releasing on the what you want cue, like Back or just in certain situations like this one?Kim Tees
ParticipantJust watched the focus forward on the jump video. This is going to be fun, talk about pushing the skill š Youāre not using a verbal ālookā, just the physical cuesā¦..point, foot? Seems like teaching a verbal look has become quite popular. Iām really interested in why you arenāt doing it here. I started one with Sly but it turned into more effort than I was ready to give it. I think our issues with it go back to look at your mat during his RDW training and I let him release more than once on the look cue. At the time it wasnāt high enough priority to deal with. And heās been able to learn the focus forward to the first jump with just the physical cues you are using in this video. Although more than one person tells me I really need to teach the verbal. Would love your thought on all of this š SO good to have stuff to geek out about again!

Participant7 1/2′ apart, 1st jump at 6″, 2nd jump at 10″. Session included several “catches” and some tug, release, tug again. I only put the 4 jump reps in the video. What do you think? Ticked the last bar on the last rep…… Getting tired? Figuring stuff out? 4 reps didn’t seem like too many, but she does put a lot of energy into tug! Maybe too much tug!?

ParticipantWind In Your Hair…..
Took a while to work this out. Started with a little more motion and throwing the toy, really hard to time that throw and it was making her do some really wacky stuff jump wise. Then I went to preplacing the toy and that was definitely better, but the dead toy wasn’t quite high enough value so decided to switch to food in bowl and that got what I think we are working on in this game? Next time we play I think I should just start with the food in the preplaced bowl? Our last rep was definitely the best…..my best as far as connection and seeing when she looked at the jump so I could cue GO. Before that it’s kinda all over the place :0Will probably play with jump setpoint sometime over the weekend…..7 1/2 feet apart, 2nd jump at 10″, keep the first jump at 6?

ParticipantWorked on our Moving Target Game over the weekend so we were able to use a moving target (one of her favorite toys!) when we played with jump set points yesterday.
Jump Set Point – 7′ apart, 6″ and 8″, moving target šOur 2nd time playing Smiley Face, worked on my verbals here….. And boy do they need work!
Kim Tees
ParticipantJump Set Point, Take 2. Jumps are a little more than 7′ apart (2 Great Mats), bars at 6″….might be a little long? She likes her MM but doesn’t LOVE it, not like Sly does. He’d kill for his! We need to do the foundation work with the moving toy, so I went to a food bowl to see if that helped her get her head down. Also, did a few reps on the other side just to see if there was any difference and doing both sides is a habit that I need to work at.
Wind in Your Hair, Take 1. I truly had no idea how this would go and was pleasantly surprised š I think next time I’ll use a ball instead of the toy, so much easier for me to throw a ball timely. On the last couple of reps, I really thought about connection on exit of the wing.

ParticipantAfter 2 weeks āin the Southā it was definitely a system shocker coming home to snow. Supposed to get down to 20 tonight š„¶ I am SO ready for some warmer weather!
Yep, sheās a couple of weeks short of 14 months, time sure does fly. Not sure how tall she is, havenāt measured her but Iād guess sheās something close to 23 but not a lot more than that. Last weigh in was 73#. I donāt think sheāll get much/if any taller but I swear she fills out a bit every day. As Berners go sheās definitely on the small sideā¦.perfect for us!
First training in almost a month. Warmed up the MM, shouldāve warmed up her Catch away from the jump a little more as she was moving forward instead of expecting the reward to end up behind. Jumps were 6ā apart, bar locked in at 6ā. Video is a little chopped up as I tried to cut out all the arguing I did with the MM. I swear they have a mind of their own sometimes.

ParticipantJust wanted to let you know that we are still here! The rest of life has been challenging these last couple of weeks and Millie is clearly demonstrating her teenageness!!!! Working through some issues between her and Sly that I thought were pretty much behind us and none of us are getting enough physical exercise or outside time because it’s been so freaking cold. Anyway……could be worse and we all actually got out today for some fun in the snow after a little training. No video but we’re focusing right now on jungle gyms, backing up and retrieving. Progress on all fronts š I’ve been trying to lookback and see what items we “missed” along the way….one of them was tunnel threadles – she nailed the one to her left but really struggled with the one to her right. We’ll play with that again sometime soon.
We are now splitting a private lesson with another young dog with Lo every other week, mostly I wanted to see if she could “work” in a new/busy location. Went to the first one a week ago. She was freaking incredible!!! She could tug, she could focus, she could run up and down a DW plank resting on a table, ran through her tunnels and drove out to her preplaced toy, wrapped around a big cone. She had fun!!!!
Have a great weekend!!!Kim Tees
ParticipantThe Cato board was the closest thing I had that adds some height and is a bit narrower for backing up. Not sure I like itā¦.seems like itās just a little too high and a little too narrow. What do you think? Close enough to work with or should I see if I can get Jim to make me something? Sheās really thinking about picking up her feet, definitely working that core! I just had an idea as to how to make it not quite so high. Iāve got some extra mats, wonder if I could stack a couple in front of the boardā¦.if you canāt lower the platform, raise the floor. I think if I can do that that it might work! Wish Iād thought of that today!
Serpentines off the other side and this time with the MM. Not sure why I was holding my hand with the target so high! Maybe a left hand, right hand thing š¤·āāļø Iāll have to be more aware of that. A little later we did a few reps with the same setup with the Threadle Slice.

Participant3 videos from several short sessions the last couple of days.
Really happy with how backing up is going. I need to watch your video to figure out what the next step is. I think weāre ready š
Better with the connection on the Rocking Horses but still need to work on the cue for the next barrel happening sooner. I think I need to spread the barrels out more? Geez, she is a big girl š³
Thrilled with these two sessions of Strike a Pose. Do I need to still be a little closer to the jump?
