ParticipantGood Morning….a couple of short sessions from yesterday. Ladder grid at 4-8-4. Seemed to go well π Once again more time spent on the stay than the actual grid π I tried to remember to be a good dog trainer and did this going in the other direction π
And then we did Find the Jump going in the other direction. The setup with the tunnel under the dogwalk is what’s setup for lessons this week and I’m too lazy to move stuff so figured I’d see if it worked OK for this exercise. So when we did it yesterday from the other direction I was too lazy to move the tire so gave it a try with the tire and it seemed to work. Hope that was all OK. And yes, I did see what you are saying about how he thought it might be a threadle in some of the first time we did this. Now I’m not sure if I “corrected” my handling when we did it yesterday. Hmmmmm… Have a great weekend!

ParticipantThanks Tracy….sounds like Exie is having a great birthday! We played with the Ladder Grid and with Finding the Jump out of a Tunnel a bit today. Two short sessions that both felt really good!!! He was really engaged and his stays were great π Ladder grid was 4’6″, first jump at 4″, 2 and 3 at 6″

ParticipantHi Tracy….Happy Birthday Exie!!!! There is a LOT of stuff in this class – I LOVE it! We played with Sends and Serps yesterday π

ParticipantWe’re back……. We did some work with the sit while we were at camp and he’s definitely more comfortable “sitting straight”, not a real tight tuck but balanced side to side, not rolled over on one hip. This exercise really “pushes” his startline stay. So, LOTS of rewards for the sit, lots of catch and slow leadouts when actually doing the jumping. This is a sample of the whole session which was fairly long with all the stay rewarding.
This is at 4’6″ and 10″.

ParticipantThanks for the info on the sit training…..perfect! All set on the “click” the box for email replies now too!!! And Kristie….I’m happy to have anyone that wants to watch Sly….I’m kinda partial to the little guy π Both of you guys have a great weekend. We’re headed to northern Maine in the morning to let Mags do what she loves more than anything in the world…a little bird hunting. See you next week!

ParticipantYou’re good! No his back feet were not tight under him. He was doing sort of a sloppy puppy sit. We’ve done a couple of short sessions at 4’6″ with the bars at 8″. Both of them turned almost totally into sessions of working on the stay. I got a bit obsessed with getting him to sit tighter which made him a bit antsy and he started to go to “that place” where he gets frantic. So I backed up and didn’t fuss with how he was sitting and just that he was waiting for a release…lots of “catch”. I’m thinking that I’m going to put this “on the shelf” for a few days….or a week or so. Work on the sit by itself first, then when that’s a bit more comfortable we’ll go back to this exercise. Good plan? Also any suggestions for teaching a tight tuck sit?
Oh yeah….hope you can help with this. In the summer session I would get an email whenever you replied to one of my posts. For some reason that’s not happening with this session. Any ideas as to why? Very likely could be something on my end…..technology and I are having more than one disagreement these days!

ParticipantAnother short set point session on Saturday morning. Used food in a bowl this time (dead toy last session) so ended up doing a bit of startline stay/wait/release… I edited most of that out. Started at 6β and 4β, then 6β and 4β6β and finished with one at 8β at 4β6β. Thoughts?

ParticipantMy iPad and I have been having a bit of a disagreement the last couple of days, finally βbeat it into submissionβ and was able to edit a couple of videos from yesterday.
First is another session with the jump set points. 3 height, spa ong combinations. Started with 4β bar, 3β6β spacing, the to 4β0β with the bar at 4β and then back to 3β6β but raised the bar to 6β
And then a little wind in your hair π

ParticipantHi Tracy, Thanks! Good to be back! Heβs 11 months old and just a bit under 16β. What if I do the next session at 3β6β, same height and see how that looks? Closer to the jump and reward further away….got it!

ParticipantThanks for reminding me to just let him have the food or the toy in the above 2 exercises. He REALLY was not happy about either of those things…and he certainly let me know, especially with the toy. As you said, he’s definitely got some pretty strong opinions about some things. One of the things that I really do like about him is that unlike Mags who when I do something that she doesn’t think is “fair” she sort of melts and we have to take a break from whatever we are doing and do something else until she’s OK again. I like it that Sly continues to play…just adjusts the rules. He’s going to teach me a lot π
Two really short sessions yesterday with lots of running……Rocking Horses with lots of speed and distance and our first session of Turn and Burn on a Wing. It was pretty warm and the humidity was still awful – thank goodness for the weather change today. Another thing I’m discovering about Sly is that he seems to be a dog that “runs hot” and heats up quickly. Mags is very clear about letting me know she’s hot, I need to pay more attention to that with Sly. Anyway….question on the Rocking Horses….. I think I was mixing up Backward Sends and Forward Sends and I’m thinking this is meant to be an exercise with Forward Sends or does it matter?
Kim Tees
ParticipantAnd a second short session from yesterday with Threadles…..there’s a LOT of stuff in this short session!!!! Not sure what we’re going to play with today but for sure it’s going to be something where he gets to run!!!!
Kim Tees
ParticipantA session from yesterday with Serps……I wanted to see how we did with me not moving (could I actually make myself stand still…answer – barely!) and just verbally cueing for him to get his toy. Interesting session…….. I think I learned a lot about him in this one. It was a “hard” one for both of us – I hate not moving!!!….good boy for sticking with me but he definitely told me not to “step on his toy” again!

ParticipantHi Kristie! SO good to hear from you. Life’s gotten back to being busy so we haven’t been videoing as much as we were. That said, my place is now open for a very limited number of rentals and I’m teaching some private and semi-private lessons but no group classes yet. I’m indoors and although it’s a nice size and really well ventilated I’m just not ready to “manage” a class situation. And honestly I’m really enjoying the individual lessons, more time to focus on specific skills and stuff. The kind of stuff I really like! I think it’s one of the reasons I SO enjoy the on-line classes – really get to concentrate and focus. Glad my questions are helping you too!!! I probably need to thank Tracy for her patience and detailed answers π They are so helpful!!!! Stay well, and hopefully we’ll all get to see each other in real life again sometime soon!!!

ParticipantGood Morning! Thanks for the explanation. It makes total sense, especially the part about the less than perfect handling. I swear that Mags’ primary purpose in life is to make me a perfect handler! She’s actually got lovely commitment but it’s got to be “by the rules” and the rules she was taught was a dog-side foot/leg. She’d never dream of going on a backwards send! Unfortunately for her I think she’s finally realized that she’s never going to be completely successful in her mission so I’m definitely going to incorporate them in Sly’s tool box.
Here’s a couple of videos from some training late last week. Rocking Horses – I need to be really careful about not getting stuck in the round and round vortex! A couple of times I did 3 or 4 in a row and he definitely slowed down …less wraps, MORE reward and fun!!!
And Strike a Pose – Serps – OH my, my hand is SO high!!! And I’m probably moving more than I should?
