ParticipantThanks so much! Will keep building on the barrel wrapping.
Rewarding stays with motion is so great! I will do more of this with Aelfraed, we just took a small break.Kyla McNeill
ParticipantHello!
Today we had nicer weather so we trained outside. We did play a little bit with toys but he still wasn’t as excited about the toys as he usually would be so mostly trained with cookies.Serpentine:
Head turn:
Threadle wrap foundations with motion:

ParticipantThanks so much! He never dropped the toy on that first rep until I asked him to so it didn’t seem like anything happened suddenly during that interaction but it’s possible after he dropped it he realized something didn’t feel good. He likely has teething stuff happening. He’s been extra chewy the last couple of days. His teeth seem to be very slow growing and it seems some teeth still are not fully grown in yet. He also possibly has a couple of adult teeth that are fully missing. He is 7.5 months now and the vet recommends an xray at a year old if teeth have not grown in to check that they are just missing and not impacted.
I did toss a (different) toy for him as I was getting ready, not realizing it would be offensive, and he was pretty unhappy about that so I’m not sure if that started anything but he still played on that first rep that was after the offensive toy toss incident. When I offered other toys after he turned off the first, he seemed interested when I first offered but wouldn’t fully engage so that seems to indicate more something with teeth I think? He has been extra interested in his food the last 2 days though, where previously he would turn off food when teeth were bothering him. He does seem to like to change things up on me, lol, so not a huge surprise if he’s not being consistent with that.I will get him a lotus ball as it seems likely it will be helpful for him. I have to acquire one as my other dogs never needed it, so hopefully we can try that out next week.
Just to clarify on adding distance and speed to rocking horses. Is this done separately or at the same time? Am I running between the barrels but also still sending? Or, doing the running reps and building out distance to send in separate sessions?
His stay is not stellar yet. In fact, he was doing well with it and then turned anti-stay which seems typical for his age so I actually haven’t been working on it at all recently and definitely not in combination with other things. Definitely should be able to use a cookie target to get ahead on the out game though.

ParticipantHello!
I tried the rocking horses game again with adding the wrap verbals. Aelfraed was in a very funny mood today. We got one great repetition to start and then he wasn’t interested in his toys any more. I tried switching to a variety of other toys and he was not into it. He was however very into his cookies today, except cookies in the dirt were extremely offensive so tossing cookies for any of the games we did was not possible.
Parallel path jump.
Out to prop.
Kyla McNeill
ParticipantSounds good, thank-you! Will try that with the pivot next time if he hasn’t already got it figured out.
Aelfraed definitely likes the rocking horses game! I had planned to try it outside but the weather was so horrible outside when we had break time that we couldn’t even walk and definitely not train. He’s only been in the arena once before I think and the black/red barrel was entirely new to him. I thought we were going to warm up slowly and see how far we got…lol. He said, let’s go!!! We practiced a couple of tunnels afterwards as well.
Kyla McNeill
ParticipantThanks so much for the additional foot targeting videos. We will definitely try that out.
We worked on threadle wrap foundations.
We also worked on Perch. He has previously learned to step up with front paws. I had previously tried to show him to pivot by stepping towards him. He does not appreciate that. He seemed to enjoy this method much more.
Kyla McNeill
ParticipantThank-you!
Will try that sequence with the food and toy sandwich although may not have a chance to be at another trial for a while now.We were playing with the disc again today and he was very happily chasing rollers and bringing it right back. He’s not obsessive like the border collies but he does seem to really like it!
Kyla McNeill
ParticipantHello!
Tried to do some rear cross with the prop. It didn’t really go that well. He didn’t want to go straight to the prop at first for some reason and then once he started going straighter he didn’t want to go ahead.
Worked on the barrel sends again. He didn’t seem that interested in the cookie plate but also did fine without it.
What are your thoughts on where to go with his foot targeting for now? Tried a mat in the box he worked on before and also a larger flat mat. He seemed happy with both. Should I do more with either of these?
Here’s a bonus video of him being a very good boy as a helper for a dog who is nervous of seeing unfamiliar dogs.
Kyla McNeill
ParticipantThanks so much!
He did well with rear cross with the prop previously but had to do straight ahead reps in between as he started to want to slow down to watch me. Will revisit that one this week.Haha, he probably did stomp his feet through!
Yes, planning on running dogwalk. I am currently planning on training with a mat, mostly because I’m familiar with the process and already have a training mat.
We did some training at an agility trial. Started with the toys as earlier he had said he did not want anything to do with any type of food in this environment. He was into the toy as long as it was the right one at the right moment and then decided he could do some food pattern as well.
Kyla McNeill
ParticipantHello,
Here is our second attempt at the alternate rear cross game. Also first try with cooked chicken as a reward and Aelfraed says he’s a big fan. I told him I’m not cooking fresh for him every day so hopefully he’s still a fan of leftover chicken.
Box with arc session. Also had to figure out which toy was acceptable in the face of chicken.
Kyla McNeill
ParticipantThank-you! That makes sense!

ParticipantIntro to stepping in/walking through a box.
This was a very interesting start. Yesterday he said these particular treats were delicious. It is entirely possible that he did not think they were as delicious today but he didn’t try to bury them or turn away with a disgusted look which is typically what he does if he doesn’t like what I’m offering. However, it took a few tries to actually eat the food. He continued to seem interested and engaged. I think he was really just more interested in the box than the food at first and then managed to be convinced that the food was part of the game.

ParticipantThanks so much! That makes so much sense about the backing up. I actually selected that platform as I thought it would be “easier” compared to some others I have as it is lower, but did not consider the narrow width. That is very cool he had that proprioception to judge that though.
Will definitely separate the sitting and backing up exercises for now. I recognized that was probably a lot of hard body work all at once and also appreciated that he wanted to communicate.
Thank-you for the suggestion with the bowl for the barrel. Will definitely try that.
Question regarding the parallel path with the jump. How much distance laterally should I be working towards? Specifically wondering how will he know the difference between when I walk forward past the prop with distance and don’t indicate that he should move with me and not go to it, but when I move forward past the jump when I am a distance away, he should still take it? I expect he will figure out the difference easily right now with each of the different props, so I guess it’s really me that needs to understand the difference, lol.
The clarify our end of training outside, we do not usually have a problem ending sessions. Most often I let him run away with the toy a bit or tell him we’re done and he will go sniff. On this day, I actually did give him a small treat scatter when I was done with the jump but I forgot that he actually doesn’t like treat scatter very much right now, especially in the grass, so he left some of the food and I believe he thought I was resetting for another game. Since he looked so eager and I probably didn’t indicate the end well enough for him, I felt it was fair to do one more game. I was not expecting that game to be “not work” but did intend for it to be something easier. Also, at the end of that game when he settled down to chill, he actually hung out there for a minute or two and then was quite calm after. We also went for a big walk around the area after putting our stuff away.
Kyla McNeill
ParticipantAelfraed was very happy he got to do extra training today as we had extra time. We did indoor training in the morning (when it was dull and wet outside) and outdoor training in the evening.
His pile of stuff he was pretty unsure about at first. It was maybe too hard and should have been spread out more but he was quite excited when the extra delicious food (ice cream) arrived.
Tried to see if he was ready to step back onto an item. He said not quite but he was trying.
Sit on a platform. He was working hard and then said he was tired and done (and was very adorable).
Training in a new field. Played some pattern game first. Unfortunately he doesn’t always think that string cheese is delicious which is very inconvenient, lol. Today was apparently a cheese is not delicious day and he tried to bury it on the 3rd toss so had to switch treats.
He seemed quite into the reverse retrieve, although for some reason didn’t like when I tossed it in the one direction at first.
Some more barrel wrapping. He definitely seems to find left harder which is interesting since he has preferred left turns on the plank. Looking to the side he needed to get to helped and he also seemed to enjoy added excitement and motion.
Parallel path with jump seemed easy today, he just paused to watch some people halfway through.
I said we were done after the jump…but he said what’s next? So, I agreed to one more game, lol. Toy play with some pattern game when he was interested in what was happening at the playground, and then just chilling.
Kyla McNeill
ParticipantThanks for the pictures! Will try that adjustment next time!
