    Hi,

How long will you be monitoring this forum? I had to fly out to California for a family emergency last Tuesday and may not be back until the 25th of March.

I had a lesson last Monday with Claudia. Skye was running over the jumps! He was still methodical on the contacts and the weaves but the jumps…. I led out two jumps to do a cross, and I felt like a freight train was coming at me at full speed!!!

I need to continue to work through everything here, but something has clicked with him this time in this class that hasn’t clicked before. I did all the Max Pup things etc, but something has changed… Maturity? Tossing the ball? Three Susan Salo seminars? Your workshop in December? But, it’s really only started since we started this class after the first week, when you had me throw his toy a mile after completing the jump.

    Take care,

    Tricia

    Hi!

So I’m really inconsistent with my serp cue🙄. I got it right a couple of times. He nearly took me out on a few. Yay!!!!! Unanticipated speed😃

On the backsides, he knows the cue “push” really well, so I thought I’d use it for backside wraps since that is what he’s really used it for. I tried “back” at first and got frustrated and switched to “push” to see if he knew it. I’ll need to teach “back” and decide which is for what turn☺️

It felt so good to catch myself when I went to fix the jump!!!

I also need to remember to repeat my cues and start them early.

I’ll be repeating all these lessons again when we’re down with class😁

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Here it is with the wing wrap. I think these are looking good. Now, should I add the bar locked in? If he goes straight two times, what should my plan be? Should I repeat my verbal cue? I’ve always just said left or right once for my soft turns. I also need to remember to say them🤔😀.

    Hi,

I’m a week behind. Here is our first session on soft turns. I wanted to get some feedback before continuing. I left most of the reinforcement in the video. He doesn’t come back quickly. He’d much rather be chased instead of running back to me with his toy. In general in the house he returns with the toy. Outside he mouths the toy instead of bringing it back unless I lure him with a treat.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

No new video….at an ASCA agility trial this weekend, but wanted to let you know that Skye now knows how to RUN! I got done with my first run of the day (gamblers) and numerous people said Skye was really looking good and that he was running instead of trotting. Someone who was at the Paula Goss distance workshop I was at 2 weeks ago was astounded by the difference. She wanted to know what I did. The only thing I did differently in the past 2 weeks was doing the wing work you’ve helped me with. He’s driving to the jumps! I’m not cheerleading.

I’m so excited. It’s like his confidence about what he’s supposed to be doing has skyrocketed. I see the makings of Presto’s speed and confidence blooming in Skye, but Skye has a much better foundation.

    Thanks!!

This makes sense, but his RoR I think was a little better. I cut out the tugging back to set up and getting cookies for releasing his toy at the start from video😊. I really have to watch my turning around and not staying connected with him when he has chased his ball down. Even that turn away is demotivating for him even though I go to play tug. I just need to forget about what just happened and run to him and play with him instead of trying to figure out what I just did wrong in the moment.

I should go back to walking etc? And maybe run out of the turn and throw the toy even if I’m walking to the wing? I think my running motion kept him going straight, and he wasn’t paying attention to my body language on the turn? It also doesn’t help that I was working on go and distance and sends to tunnels and taking jumps straight on his line for the ASCA trial this weekend yesterday.

    😞😊🤔

    Hi,

So, here’s the good the bad and the ugly. I started with an enthusiastic dog who made some errors, I think because I’ve been working on driving hard. The set up was different. I think I just messed up. I should have stopped and regrouped. Help!

    So, how about this one😊.

Should I stay on week 1 and add the jump with a locked in bar at 12”?

    Hi,

What do you think of this? It’s hard to be running and throw when he’s digging in, but I think since I put more energy into it he was running to the wing. I don’t think I threw at the toy at the right time. Two people would be easier.

Maybe restrained recalls to work on drive to me? A first pole and dragging the lure around 5he wing? He’s gung Ho about lure coursing and dock diving and Nosework. Maybe since he was so anxious when I started agility and we had to be on tip toes to keep him from eating, not let him get stressed, the drive just didn’t get built in. Maybe just more time and confidence because it’s more complicated than his other sports.

So, here is the 3rd set but just the 1st exercise. He’s digging in nicely, but should I be running as I’m throwing the ball in order drive into me? He’s digging in on the turn. Next, I’ll add the jump, but I’ll use a different bar and wing so I can lock it in.

Just wanted to double check before I went any farther.

What you said makes all good sense. I have problems getting him to run into me and dig in on the “around” for frisbee too. He LOVES frisbee. I’ve been working on that too.

    Best,

    Hi,

Theme of the day is “Scattered” Here are 3 training sessions. I thought he was ready for more motion on the jump after doing the walking & jogging. The first session on the video clip is of adding more motion. He’s knocking a 12″ bar. Then, he went straight on a wrap after a “Go”, so I went back to walking. In the 3rd clip, I raised the bar to 16″ because I thought he need more incentive to actually jump. I wasn’t focused today, and it showed.

Flurry has a bilateral iliopsoas strain and a right satorious muscle pull in her right leg. Confirmed by the Chiro, Dr. Hummel, and his PT. None think it’s bad. 4 more weeks of leash walks with increasing lengths, no stairs, and no playing. Then transition to off leash. All think the most logical cause was by splaying of her legs on ice.

    Best,

    Hi,

Here’s my videos of Skye. I think he has this down. I can be rotating away and he will still go and wrap the wing. One of the reps I forgot to say the verbal immediately, and I could see him eyeing the jump. Good boy when he turned! I added in the toy because I wasn’t getting much momentum.

Flurry is going to Skylos tomorrow. The Chiropractor thought it was a slip on the ice and she splayed her legs. I haven’t seen any lameness since the night of the incident. Thanks for asking. It was very scary.

    Hi,

I’m behind. . . I’m working on week 3 but not much video to show for it. Cal’s on vacation again:-), Slider has had some set backs, and a friend was in a bad car accident so I’m taking care of her Aussie. Just haven’t had much mental space to do stuff for me:-)

Anyway, here is a frisbee session I had with Skye. It was much better than usual. Cal is the normal frisbee thrower. This session is from today. Previously, if Skye misses catching a frisbee (bad throw, lack of experience catching, etc) he’ll go to where it fell to the ground, but instead of picking it up, he mouths it and then starts to eat stuff off the ground. I finally got my tripod out and thought I’d get it on video, but of course he caught almost all of them. There are I think 3 times he went to eat something.

I’m saying “bite” to take if from my hand. I’m going to use “tug” to mean I’m going to hold on and we play tug. I noticed a remembered maybe once to say “get it”. Should I be saying “get it” for this?

Some questions. . . On the turn back, Skye has an awesome stay even at agility trials. Once at an ASCA agility trial, he was the only dog in 16+” Open Jumpers. I put him on a stay in front of the first jump and went and changed most of the bars since they were short on ring crew. He stayed the whole time. When I put something behind him, he won’t leave. I have to say “Okay” to get him move then point to the toy, otherwise he comes to me. So, he comes slightly forward and then turns to get the toy. Should I keep working on this so the “toy” cue becomes a release as well?

I’m still having problems with “shhhhhhh”. I must use that verbal for something else because he’s still confused. So, I’m running with a toy, he’s looking at it almost chasing it, but not, then, I say “shhhhhhh”, and he stops following it almost liked a yelled “no” (which he doesn’t know the meaning of anyway. . . ) I’m going to need to change the verbal. maybe “Weeeeee”. Any ideas?:-)

I’ll try and get more video this week and catch up on week 4. I need a concrete plan to work on him getting his thrown reward and then checking in with me instead of eating stuff (if there’s nothing to eat, like indoors, he’ll pee on something.) I feel like I’m a big cheerleader to keep him from eating like in the frisbee video. Should I be?

So, my current plan is to start a thrown reward outdoors with me being very close and clicking for his head turn toward me. He does this with tossed food like in your video, but not with a toy. So, maybe similar to the “Bite” game I did with the frisbee? I need to get it with another toy so I can use it in Agility. He also is extremely hard to get to leave female pee. Even a piece of cheese on his nose doesn’t do it. So, if Flurry peed anywhere near where I tossed something. . . well he’s stuck there for minutes.

Anyway, I’m really enjoying this class. It’s making me think every time I reward the pups.

    Hi,

It’s been a busy week, and I got some weird thing and had to go to the ER. I’m fine, but it took a number of days out of my training.

So, lately, I’ve been working on getting distance a gamble foundations. I’ve been working on getting him to turn away from me (Switch) and go over an obstacle. I toss the reward to him and say “catch”. This would be correct? I have him running to a target where he stays to receive the reward. Now, if he were continuing to run and I threw the toy that would be “get it”, correct?

I really want Skye to get his reinforcement and connect with me instead of eat something. I think getting this into a loop will work. We do lots of loops, typically, it’s a CU pattern game where his connection/eye contact causes me to deliver his reinforcement somewhere. So, what do you think of do an obstacle, I toss his ball, he gets it, then connects with me, which causes me to ? I’m not sure…. What the rest of the loop would be.

With Flurry, I’m using catch for contact behavior.

I think with Flurry taking a jump when I’m standing next to it, maybe wrapping, will be good. She still has the issue of when we get to a jump at the same time, she refuses to take it. It’s better, but it still pops up. So the toy placement one I think would be good for her. She would have to ignore the lotus ball and go around the wing. I’ll get video tomorrow.

Hooray! I think the last time I saw him, he was 8 weeks old!

That’s right! I had just picked him up a few days before! It was Mother’s Day weekend.

Question – can he tug with his Outfox on?

Why, yes! He can tug with his Outfox on. I’d just use an old one because it kind of messes them up:-) I have 5 of them. I kept back ups in case they stop making them. I go through about 3 a year.

Her session looked really strong! The cue to out seems to be when your second hand gets on or goes towards the toy?

Thanks! That must be it. I wonder why she stops tugging sometimes before I say “out”. I’ll be conscience of my other hand.

For the bringing it back – you can do a get it and as soon as her mouth is on it, present a higher value toy in your hand and ask her to come back to tug. Then we can delay the presentation of the 2nd toy until she is on her way back with the first toy. You were very fun, getting her to come back!

Perfect! I do this with two tennis balls with Skye. Just didn’t think to do it here.

    Thanks,

    Tricia
