Participant>>Happy birthday, Bazinga!! I hope she got lots of gifts and snacks đ>>
Bazinga says thank you!!! She had a fun day!
We’ll be back after the 12th âșKathy McClung
ParticipantHi Tracy!
I know we are in the 11th hour on this class & I want to thank you again for the extension! You gave me such great feedback on the Handling Challenge 6 session, I just had to push & try again! We also did a session of the Verbal Only Commitment (from the chair) (((I won’t make you watch it – lol!))) I tried calling her back before she made the wrong choice and it seemed to help her. I’ll keep working on this with her.>>I think what was happening here was that you were emphasizing the verbals a lot and dialing back the handling⊠which is what made it harder for her to read the lines. ….
…This is good to know! At the start of the next session, continue to use the verbals but also emphasize the handling that supports the verbals to help set the lines, and I bet she gets it.
>>
I did not realize that I was dialing back my handling. I hope that I improved on this next session.>>And when you are working the switch away on the tunnel exit, converge your line of motion towards the exit and drop your hands down to your knee-level or below so she can see the hand motion. You were hanging back a bit and your hands ended up above your shoulders, so she didnât see the turn away cue.
>>
The converging totally worked for the switch away. If she saw me move in before she went into the tunnel, she was ready to turn on the exit! Thank you! This was such a challenging & fun class. I think we learned a lot. Frankie worked hard and was very forgiving of all my shortcomings as a handler.
Handling Challenge 6 – Combo 2

ParticipantHi Tracy!
Wed’s class was fun to watch!>>Set point â what was the distance between jumps here? This will help us keep track.>>
The jumps are 3 feet apart and both pool noodles are on the ground.>>I think you were not really trusting her stay LOL so you were releasing, getting the toy in, and running all at once, at different spots. So she didnât always seem to know if she should release when the toy moved or not. Moving more slowly will help her hold the stay as you lower the toy before the release.
>>
Thanks for the feedback about my release timing. I will keep it more consistent. We tried the Sends & Serps game. She got the first one and then we struggled. I angled the jump (a few times). It was VERY dependent on my mechanics. If I got my timing right & looked at my hand and had good body language, she got it! My video cut out, so I included what we got & a lot of the in-between so you can see how it went. I was able to work both directions and eventually straightened the jump. I’ll try to fit another session in with her today.
Thanks for watching!!!!

ParticipantHi! We revisited the Challenge 6 but it was just one of those sessions where we did not have anything that we had in the last session. I tried to break things down into small pieces to refresh her, but ended the session on a happy note & just played when she just seemed distracted. I was hoping to get to try Combo 2 but yesterday was not the day. I flipped the course so maybe it all seemed new going from the other direction. We will try again today.

ParticipantThanks for all the feedback above! I watched my feet in the videos & I will pay attention to them.
We did not get a lot of games in this weekend. We were at a trial and then Bazinga came down with some kind of booger-thing and wasn’t feeling well, so I didn’t want to do anything too strenuous with her until she was feeling better. We did practice our wraps on a wing of the practice jump at the trial though – she loved it!We did the Set Point with the moving toy yesterday đ
We did the Pill Bug game this morning! I need more speed! LOL
I’ll be on hold from April 1 to 12th. I’m traveling to stay with my Mom while she has surgery. I won’t have any dogs with me đ I’ll watch all the videos though so that we can play when I get back. I’ll double down on our efforts this week so that we don’t fall too far behind.
I missed the flyball tournament! I was so bummed!!! I hope they run it again.
Thanks!

ParticipantWrap Proofing
Ok. She amazed me with her wraps!
I was not moving at all in the beginning and I threw her off. I figured it out after a few tries (I’m slow) and started turning with her a little.
She was into it & really pulling against the collar!
Moving Target
Still working on interest in toys as a reward. I tried throwing a cheese stick and she looked at me like I was loco! I am spending time just playing with toys and tugging more to build value for the toys. Also showing her that I am putting a treat inside the lotus ball and then playing & letting her have the treat from inside. For this game I stuck a whole string cheese inside the holee roller!!! That got her interest.
Smiley Faces
OMG!!! Directionally Challenged Human Alert!!! I need some way to teach my brain to act fast. I got the left & right turns messed up on the post turns & I practiced ahead of time! I’m going to have to remember to yell the opposite directional from the arm I have out for turns!
At least she read my cues and maybe understood that I was not using a wrap verbal.

ParticipantThank you for the feedback & for answering my question. I was having trouble visualizing them!
I will try this again. I think you are right. I just BOOM stopped moving and she had zero information. Why do these dogs even like us sometimes? We worked on Handling Challenge 6 yesterday! Wow! We broke it up into 2 sessions.
Switch Aways to Jump
I needed to back chain 1-2 to the #3 tunnel as a small sequence but she learned it!
Then we added on the other elements.
Combo 1
She thought 1-4 of Combo 1 was fun!
We have not been able to get the line from 4 to 5. I think I am not in a good position to show her the line. Actually, now that I look again… I am asking her to switch when I need to get out of the way & show the straight line. So I am totally messing her up there. Giant yay alert – she was totally reading the Threadles (close, close) and she just learned these during this class!!! WAHOO! I may be able to take these to trial soon!Combo 2
I haven’t tried Combo 2 yet because we got stuck on Combo 1 but it has different moves & I think she can get it – if I can remember it! <grin>
I’ll give that a try next.So I have been finding these adorable Field Guide vignettes in our videos! I had to share. I bet everyone is getting them. A little conference at the camera as we review our Field Guides!
I love, love, love the field guides – they are so helpful!Field Guide Chat with Frankie 1

ParticipantHi Tracy!
We tried this for Handling Challenge 5! SO MUCH HARD! LOL I had to make it easier so she would be successful. We only tried the easiest position of the jump because it was so challenging for her.>>The line on the ground can run from the wing of the start jump all the way towards the camera, so you are running towards the camera the whole time: can she go to the tunnel without needing you to step towards it? Start with the jump in the easiest position first and see how she doesÂ
>>I have a question about your wrap vs slice definitions (Backside Wrap vs Backside Slice) to make sure I understand them. I don’t have a backside wrap yet, but I’d like to!
>>
Backside Slice Verbal (Back Back) This means âgo out to the backside of the jump away from me and slice the jumpâ, which could imply pushing away to go there or staying on the parallel path line. I personally use separate cues for backside wrap and backside slice.
Backside Wrap Verbal (DigDigDig) This means âgo out to the backside of the jump away from me and wrap the jump, creating a 360 degree turnâ, which could imply pushing away to go there or staying on the parallel path line.
>>What is the difference between “push away” vs “stay on parallel path”? Would push away be just a sharper angle for the dog that is not a parallel path? Here are links to drawings that describe what I’m thinking. Am I getting it? Also is the exit path I’m showing for the backside wraps correct?

ParticipantThanks for the feedback. I love that you think she likes to go FAST!!! hee hee hee
I tried out the advanced level of Wind in your Hair with the Manners Minder to see if it went better than the thrown toy & thrown food. It was very exciting! I had to play with the distance of the wing & the MM to find the sweet spot where she could work & find the parallel path and where she wasn’t so BOING-Y over the jump. I kept some of that in the video so you could see the process.
We tried the Set Point Intro. I spent some time with “catches” between the jumps and got her used to releasing to the MM before I set her up in the official spot. I did 3 feet for her. Do you think this is the right distance for her? I also used 2 pool noodle bumps. I have not used a jump bar with her since we started class with you. If she is ready, I will, but I want to be sure she is ready. âș
She really could tell this was a new game and was very focused on figuring out the “rules”. She was very serious and attentive when I set her up with the cookie!
Thank you!
I’m hoping to get back out there with her later today. we were away at a trial so we have some catching up to do before tomorrow!Kathy McClung
ParticipantI like the idea of having the “trade treats” off the the side. I’ll give it a try. It seems like once the food goes in the mouth, the STARVING happens, but I’ll keep working on it to see if we can get somewhere with it. I also tried showing her that the lotus ball has treats inside it & that seemed to help a little. You can see the results in the The Wind In Their Hair game we tried today.
I had to do a quick game of transferring the barrel skills to a wing, but she got it no problem. Smartie!
I started with a toy but she was really running to the treats behind the camera in the beginning, so I just switched to throwing treats. They are slow to land, so I will keep working on getting the toy working for this game.
I had to giggle that most of the time as we approached the wing on the way back, she ran around it on her own. LOL I may have edited that out though.

ParticipantGood Morning!
Here is our Moving Target game
The first few tries she was more interested in the treats I was using to reward (bribe) her to drop the toy. I put the treats away & she did get more interested in the toy. Whens he is looking for a treat, her head is up. There was a lot of leaping. I will try & keep the toy lower on the ground. When I switched to the jump and used “break” I think she was back to wanting food again because I brought it back out for the “catches”.
I missed your intro to game #2 in the Zoom chat last night (demanding potty break) so I am excited to see the recording today & get the details. Fun class!!!

ParticipantHi Tracy!
>>I guess our cars are smart enough to know when we should not be thinking about dog training LOL!!!>>
I was totally not driving!!! I realize how this reads! EEK! I was a passenger all the way.>>WOW WOW WOW!!!! Being consistent like that with such a fast dog is REALLY HARD â well done!!!!!>>
THANK YOUâ€ïž
I will stalk the FACE class for the next time it is offered and will work on the resilience games with her.We did the Handling 5 today (not the 6 yet) and also revisited the Turn Aways with quicker timing of the verbals with the tunnel. It took me a few tries to remember to drive in with that extra step from the jump but slow-human got it eventually!
Question on the Switch Aways – I think she understands to “turn away from me” or change her direction with the “swicth” verbal & body cues. In AKC, we don’t see a lot of layering. Would this be used to switch away to a single obstacle ever? If there is no layering? Or does there always need to be a layering & longer line involved? I listened to the live chat & the discussion, about “switch” vs directionals but I’m still a little fuzzy on the application. Should I save this for those “special” akc layer moments and work on directionals for turn aways to 1 obstacle?

ParticipantHi Tracy!
I tried to join the zoom class on Thursday but I was in a car and Zoom wouldn’t let me have audio. I guess there is a drive-safe mode that I couldn’t override. I’m sorry I missed it! I am watching the video this morning. OMG Jitterbug is such a FuzzCute!!!! MEEP!!!!Weekend update âș
Frankie was AMAZING! We did not have a single off course! We trialed 3 days and she QQd 2 days!
I used the “jump, jump.jump” cream cheese spread verbal on a line of jumps that was pointing right into an off-course tunnel. The dogs needed to take a sharp turn right in front of the tunnel to a jump. I rear-crossed the jump in front of the tunnel and kept saying “jump, jump, jump” and she got it!
The bummer this weekend was that she was nervous in the environment. So that got us a few times. When she is nervous she runs slow so I probably had more time to handle because of that. There was a dog using the practice jump right outside the ring & it was aligned with the weaves and she saw the dog & jumped out of the weaves. I felt so bad for her because I could tell it was involuntary & she looked at me like “Crap! Did you see that!? Sorry!” and then she jumped right into the weaves and drove out ahead and did great. But the seed was planted and she was nervous all weekend. I really want to take the FACE class, because what I’m doing isn’t enough for her, but I just don’t have the bandwidth for another class right now. Maybe the next time it is offered. We have nice weather today so I’m going to set up Handling 6 with Frankie. Excited to get back to it with her! âș
Thank you SO MUCH for the extension, it really took the pressure off to not have to rush through the last set of exercises.Kathy McClung
Participant>>
Yes, but also no â now that I have gotten to watch some FrankieTV, it can be easier: she commits like a big dog (she commits just before the exit of the previous obstacle) so you need to handle her with big dog timing.
>>>>I think you need to make only 1 adjustment: be sooner. When she is jumping the previous jump, or at the top of the frame, you need to be fully turned to the line you want or she will stay on her existing line.
>>
WHOA! I see that she commits to the next obstacle right when she is hovering over the bar of the previous jump & at the top of the Aframe & I think at the beginning of the descent on the DW. but I never thought about big dog vs little dog commitment point. I have always tried to set the line midway between the obstacles…for a small dog. I CAN’T WAIT TO TRY THIS!!! We are headed to a trial this weekend so I’ll let yo know how it goes! THANK YOU!!!>>
Next time I am in Florida, I am going to have you run one of my bigs to feel what Frankieâs timing should be đ
>>
I would love, love, love & be so honored to run one of your biggies!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
I’ll see if I can try running a friend’s Weim. She has done doggie trades before đCONGRATS on the new BABEH!!! So exciting. So fuzzy and adorable!!!
