ParticipantVerbals only (standing)
We are working on the verbal-only sends. We warmed up with these this morning. I stood in front of each obstacle and she is getting it. I tried going to the middle and she did ok, there were some misses.
Verbals around the clock
We tried this again yesterday & I did not hit record. She did a really good job though. She was too tired to do another round, so we re-did it today. I moved the wing into each position pretty quickly today – quicker than I would have if we didn’t do it yesterday.
I used more motion and am really working on looking at her & setting the line to the tunnel with my feet & chest for the tunnel sends. I think it is helping. I noticed she was distracted & looking at the toy in my hand, so I hid it again. I’m also trying to keep the “jump” verbal low & quieter and the “tunnel” verbal loud & projected.
I’m thinking about what I say at a trial and I only say “jump” once when she reaches the takeoff point before a jump (ideally if my timing is right). I’m thinking about adding in “jump, jump, jump” when there is a discrimination challenge present – what do you think?
I’m adding on our afternoon session – we did the Handling Challenge 3.
She got the threadles! I just faked it like we have trained it with the “close” verbal & cues we are training in the puppy class & she got it! We have not trained a threadle wrap & I need to learn how to train that but we tried it using a lap turn-ish move.

Participant>>You can also teach her a behind-the-back start where she slingshots behind you at a run β SUPER FUN! I have video of that somewhere if you want to see it.>>
I would love to see that! Thanks for the advice on the start lines! It helps to know we can build it as our connection/skills build.
I’m excited for the next class & we’ll keep working on the games from this class until then.Kathy McClung
Participant>>I donβt know when it will be aired, but I will definitely share the date/time. >>
Yes! Please!!!>>You can also try this with an ice cream cone β vanilla ice cream, so if you drop it then she can eat it LOL!>>
Depending on how hot it is, we may race each other to the dropped cone!I’ll try the verbals while I am standing again and see how it goes. I’m starting to think a quieter “jump” with a louder “tunnel” verbal helps her.
We tried the Verbals around the Clock – just the first position – today. Some wins and some misses but she was INTO it. She loves her toy! π Also I was waaaaayyyyy to pointy.

Participant>>(And if you are anywhere near Ocala this weekend, come by the WEC, we will be there helping with the ESPN Flyball Invitational!!)>>
That sounds SO FUN!!!! I hope you had a blast! Do you know when the Flyball Invitational will be aired!? I love WEC! Any time we trial anywhere in Ocala we take a trip there with the dogs & have dinner.
We tried the verbals only with the MM and it was hard again for her. When I went to edit the video, I realized I only took a picture & didn’t get any π I’m so bummed because I’m not sure what to try next. She was motivated to move away from me but we did not have a good success rate at choosing the correct obstacle. I stood up a few times and that seemed to make it easier for her. She did better from a standing position. I put her in a neutral position between my feet.
She was funny in this session, when she took the jump incorrectly and didn’t hear the MM beep, she detoured into the exit end of the tunnel, like “I got it!” So I think she is understanding that it is 1 or the other but not associating the verbals?ok – Calm Your Hands with a Drink! I did it. It REALLY made me change the way I was running/moving. I am going to keep this in rotation in hopes that it helps me have good body language & connection. I have always bent over too much & my pointiness needs to be stopped! HAHA!!!! Thanks for this!!!
We tried it with the Combos sequences!

ParticipantHi Tracy!
I have a question about start lines & I’d love your opinion on this. Do I need to use a sit? Do you have a verbal like “Wait”?
I have been using “wait” for the verbal but I’m rethinking how to train it for Bazinga. Frankie has some fears (I think she is afraid of big dogs) that we have been working on and they really manifest at the start line. When it gets bad, she shuts down, so I recently stopped putting her in a sit (I gave up on the start line stay all together for a while until she got some confidence back). It really seemed to help to let her stand at the start. I’m not releasing from far away with F (just a few steps) but it is working for her.Β Bazinga is a different personality, but I want to create a routine that works for her. I’m looking for good ideas on how to give her a great start-line experience. Some routine just for her. I know some people play with their dogs, some people set the dogs up between their legs… just looking for ideas! I’m afraid my hyper-focus on supporting Frankie is making me blind to the possibilities. We worked on some of the games we haven’t tried yet.
Handling Concept – Simple Decel (Week 12)
Prop Game: Get Out Cue (Week 6)
I warmed up with some targets on the prop to refresh the value for it before we started.
Thanks for your feedback! We are going to keep working so we are ready for the next class!

ParticipantHi!
>>
We do handling classes sprinkled throughout the year, with the big one starting in June called CAMP!
>>
I’m so in!!!
We tried the soft break today and she is reading it! I’ll be working on that! Thank you!We did the Combos #2 & #3 today. Then we tried the Verbals-only game with the chair. She did much better. We were not 100% but it seems like she is thinking about which to choose. here are our videos.
The noise & barking is from my neighbor. Frankie was a trooper about the distractions.Combos 2

ParticipantHi! We tried the Tunnel Rocking Horses. We had some trouble connecting at the exit of the tunnel and we had 1 crash. I moved the barrel further away from the tunnel and that seemed to give us more time to connect before we interacted with the barrel.
I’m going through the remaining games we haven’t tried yet to give each one a try. I’m feeling behind but I don’t want to rush & miss valuable small steps. We are going to try the Get Out today.

ParticipantWow – thank you for this video! This is a new move for me. We are going to work on it! Do you have a handling class? I would LOVE to take one with you. I see I really need to improve what I am doing to help Frankie.
We are going to do more on week 1 today πKathy McClung
ParticipantThanks for watching! I’m looking forward to the backside vs. tunnel exercise!! That would be amazing to master (or even be ok at!)
>>
Let me know if you need a brake arm video π
>>
If you have one, I’d love to see it!Kathy McClung
Participant>>
Do you have a map of this course? I am curious to see where she was tempted by the off course tunnel gremlins π
>>Oooooo! That would be awesome! Thank you! I have the map & a video of my run. The tunnel is obstacle #5 but she missed #4 which was a 90 degree backside. After reading your feedback from today, I’m thinking I was too pointy & lost connection!
I’m noticing that I lack the eye contact connection that I see you have in your videos. I am relying on my hand/arm to direct her, but there is really no connection there.

ParticipantEEEEEK! Hi Tabitha!!!! I have been watching Grumio’s videos & his mad-skillz!!!! You & Grumio are my inspiration for taking MaxPup with Bazinga and now I’m addicted to Tracy!!! π <3

ParticipantHi Tracy!
We had a great trial weekend! I only lost her to 1 tunnel trap & the weekend was full of tunnel discrimination challenges. We practiced the first Combos! sequence today. Here is our video. I lost her to the wrong end of the tunnel quite a few times on #5. I really had to drive past the jump towards the right end of the tunnel.
I looked ahead at the Week 2 games and we do not have a very strong/advanced threadle like the one pictured in the videos. Should I substitute a different move there? That said, I’ll try it with the threadle & see how we do, but I wanted an option in case it is a sticking point in the sequence. I am re-training it and changing the verbal. My current verbal is long & sing-song-y (threadle-threadle) and worked for straight-on threadles but they need way more speed these days! I’m taking this opportunity to re-train it! π
Kathy McClung
ParticipantThank you for the breakdowns. I tried this one today and she was much more successful.
>> β you can be sitting in a chair, closer to the obstacle, but only have one visible so she learns to independently leave you for a jump or tunnel without motion and without the other obstacle visible.
>>
I was able to move back a few times for the jump & the tunnel. She had great successes with the tunnel. She did well on the jump with the exception that she wanted to do some backsides. She had a few misses with the jump. We are still struggling with the high value of the toy as a reward. That was a separate, but good lesson. I’m going to try thrown treats next. That should be less distracting. We are headed to a trial this weekend. I’ll try standing and giving only the verbal at the practice jump π You can bet I’ll be paying extra attention to my connection this weekend! <3 Thank you!!!

ParticipantHi! Thanks for the feedback. I’ll try another session. I’ll try putting her in a start line stay this time so I can start moving before I release her. We have been working on it. Your notes on body position are great. I re-watched your video and compared it to mine. Your name for this game is on point because I really need to “strike a pose”. HaHa
We tried the Backside Slide Foundations game. All I can say is, I sat in on the live class with my mouth hanging open, super impressed at all the puppies doing BACKSIDES as PUPPIES and couldn’t wait to see Bazinga doing them. I waited to make sure I felt like we were ready & I was so proud of her in this session! The body cues are so key here! I’m going to use “push, push” for the backside slice, because that is what I use for all backsides with Frankie (I only have 1 verbal). I think I’ll pick “back, back” for the backside wraps since I’m not using that yet and I can add it to Frankie’s vocab π
I alternated in “Catches” and “Breaks” on the startline. Is that ok to do with the games?Kathy McClung
ParticipantGood morning!
Ok…this is HARD! I tried the verbal discrimination while sitting and Frankie had no idea what I wanted her to do. I feel like I tried it for too long. She was confused and I didn’t know how to clarify for her. I felt bad. She jumped all around me in the chair trying to get her rewards for a while, not understanding to leave me to do the obstacles. Then she did eventually take a jump. She was so excited that she did something right. But I can see she does not understand the verbals. I think she just remembered that the jump was the last successful thing she did the last time I was being a total weirdo – hahaha. She could not get the tunnel while I was sitting.I backed up and took the jump away and just did isolated tunnel sends with the verbal only. She got those when it was the only option. (not pictured)
