Do you have a map of this course? I am curious to see where she was tempted by the off course tunnel gremlins πŸ™‚
    >>

Oooooo! That would be awesome! Thank you! I have the map & a video of my run. The tunnel is obstacle #5 but she missed #4 which was a 90 degree backside. After reading your feedback from today, I’m thinking I was too pointy & lost connection!

I’m noticing that I lack the eye contact connection that I see you have in your videos. I am relying on my hand/arm to direct her, but there is really no connection there.

    Hi Tracy!
We had a great trial weekend! I only lost her to 1 tunnel trap & the weekend was full of tunnel discrimination challenges.

We practiced the first Combos! sequence today. Here is our video. I lost her to the wrong end of the tunnel quite a few times on #5. I really had to drive past the jump towards the right end of the tunnel.

I looked ahead at the Week 2 games and we do not have a very strong/advanced threadle like the one pictured in the videos. Should I substitute a different move there? That said, I’ll try it with the threadle & see how we do, but I wanted an option in case it is a sticking point in the sequence. I am re-training it and changing the verbal. My current verbal is long & sing-song-y (threadle-threadle) and worked for straight-on threadles but they need way more speed these days! I’m taking this opportunity to re-train it! πŸ™‚

Thank you for the breakdowns. I tried this one today and she was much more successful.
    >> – you can be sitting in a chair, closer to the obstacle, but only have one visible so she learns to independently leave you for a jump or tunnel without motion and without the other obstacle visible.
    >>
I was able to move back a few times for the jump & the tunnel. She had great successes with the tunnel. She did well on the jump with the exception that she wanted to do some backsides. She had a few misses with the jump. We are still struggling with the high value of the toy as a reward. That was a separate, but good lesson. I’m going to try thrown treats next. That should be less distracting.

We are headed to a trial this weekend. I’ll try standing and giving only the verbal at the practice jump πŸ˜‰ You can bet I’ll be paying extra attention to my connection this weekend! <3 Thank you!!!

Hi! Thanks for the feedback. I’ll try another session. I’ll try putting her in a start line stay this time so I can start moving before I release her. We have been working on it. Your notes on body position are great. I re-watched your video and compared it to mine. Your name for this game is on point because I really need to “strike a pose”. HaHa

We tried the Backside Slide Foundations game. All I can say is, I sat in on the live class with my mouth hanging open, super impressed at all the puppies doing BACKSIDES as PUPPIES and couldn’t wait to see Bazinga doing them. I waited to make sure I felt like we were ready & I was so proud of her in this session! The body cues are so key here! I’m going to use “push, push” for the backside slice, because that is what I use for all backsides with Frankie (I only have 1 verbal). I think I’ll pick “back, back” for the backside wraps since I’m not using that yet and I can add it to Frankie’s vocab πŸ˜‰
I alternated in “Catches” and “Breaks” on the startline. Is that ok to do with the games?

    Good morning!
Ok…this is HARD! I tried the verbal discrimination while sitting and Frankie had no idea what I wanted her to do. I feel like I tried it for too long. She was confused and I didn’t know how to clarify for her. I felt bad. She jumped all around me in the chair trying to get her rewards for a while, not understanding to leave me to do the obstacles. Then she did eventually take a jump. She was so excited that she did something right. But I can see she does not understand the verbals. I think she just remembered that the jump was the last successful thing she did the last time I was being a total weirdo – hahaha. She could not get the tunnel while I was sitting.

I backed up and took the jump away and just did isolated tunnel sends with the verbal only. She got those when it was the only option. (not pictured)

Interestingly, you stayed in motion on every single jump cue and your connection was great on all the jump cues. On the tunnel cues, you were tending to stop your motion and send, with less connection.
    >>

WOW! I guess since I lose her to the tunnel at trials a lot, that I assumed they are easy for her and she doesn’t need as much support to go there than if there is a jump nearby. I will change my ways!!! Once you pointed it out, I could see that I was not staying connected with her on the way to the tunnels. THANK YOU!

Should I do the sitting in a chair discriminations next? Re-do the Handling Challenge 1? Try the Combos or all 3 – hahaha? Just wondering if I should approach them in a certain order.

    Hi Tracy,
No barrels today but we will try them tomorrow!

We tried Building Up: Adding Motion To Serps And Threadles. We did a refresh on Serps & Threadles since it has been a bit since we worked on them. Then we moved on to adding the motion. I did most with a cookie toss and I waited until she was on her way to me before I moved. It looks like you were moving before you released, I will work on starting sooner. Also, I think I need to keep my arm more still…or lower it once she commits to jumping away?

    FUN DAY!
    Handling Challenge 1
We tried it! I can see some of the ones where she chose the wrong obstacle, my arms are both out so my body language is (a) sloppy and (b) overriding my verbal.

We tried the jump with verbal only this afternoon. We did the Handling Challenge 1 in the morning so there was time between each exercise. I think she slept on it! So excited!☺

    Hi!

    Thanks for the feedback.
I will try the Tight Turns: Leading With The Head and 360s (Backside Wraps) with a chair & a rug! Thanks!

    >> I am a crazy person who has a roll of turf (a small one haha) to cover my wood floors in my living room LOL!! >>
This cracked me up! I am so envious of your turf roll! I gotta get one!!

We finally went back to the tunnel after a little break after that session where she did not want to play. She was a little rusty, but I think she was happy to play with the tunnel. I’ll try the rocking horse game next to make it more fun.

We also worked on side & back sends on the barrels. I am just outright stealing both your wrap sounds now! Thief! I think I am having human-trouble getting the mechanics of the fast forward, slow forward, send. Am I doing it right? I kept these a little slow so I could get my mechanics working.

    Thank you!

Thank you!! I’m glad you got to meet Frankie ☺
She SLEPT in the afternoon after that session. Haha
A question on the Handling game 1:
I need help with the human mechanics. Is the Spin a Front Cross + Blind Cross? Or is it just a Blind Cross?

    Hi!!!
Ok. I was dyyyying to see what Frankie would do in this exercise! We did the jump first & the tunnel second.

I made a mistake by using a thrown toy as the reward. It was too high value and she was so distracted. She hasn’t had this toy in a while and she was off the charts distracted. She normally does not jump all over me but she was. There were a lot of tries where she just circled me & tried to get the toy. I took a break and just played with the toy with her and came back to the setup. She eventually got it on the jump. I don’t think I lured her! I showed you the try before her breakthrough moment on the jump. I tried adding in the “ready. ready” but then not moving only saying the verbal. I hope I did it right.

I think there were a lot of firsts for us here. I don’t think I have ever sent her to a jump from a standstill on just a verbal with no movement before. It was interesting! I have not worked with her with collar holds in this context like I have been doing with Bazinga.

Can’t wait to hear your feedback!
PS – I swear I am not jerking her around by the collar. I am holding it & she is a spaz! It looks terrible on video!

    Verbal Only – Jump

    Verbal Only – Tunnel

Hi! Quick question before we get started on the single obstacle warm-ups.
I’m going to start with a thrown reward for the single obstacle warm-up. I am thinking that the Manners Minder would be considered a lure for the warm-up exercises. Is that right?
I thought you mentioned that the MM is ok for when there are 2 obstacles and the dog has to discriminate between 2 obstacles. So can I use it once I switch to the seated jump & tunnel discrimination exercise?

    Thank you!!!!

    Hi Tracy,

It is too rainy to play outside today so I found a game we hadn’t tried yet that we could do indoors. We tried out Tight Turns: Leading With The Head and 360s (Backside Wraps).
Our upright is a little janky, so I ordered some 5-way PVC connectors so I can make a real upright for the next session. I started with right turns (her hard turns) and realized it after a few tries. We switched to lefts – much easier for her. Then we switched back to rights.

She faked me out with her heat cycle & now she is having her real heat. Poor baby. I have to leave her home while I go to a trial this weekend, so we won’t get to play until Monday.
    I’m so bummed!

    Have a great weekend!

    Hi Tracy,

Sorry for the long lapse in videos. My senior girl is having some health issues. She seems to be doing better (fingers crossed). I have just been frozen and afraid to train. I don’t know why…kinda like I was going to break everything. It is weird how training gets so emotional. Anyway, I took the plunge & me & Bazinga had some fun today ☺ so that is a good thing!

I startedback with the barrels because they are the thing that I was feeling least confident about. I refreshed the front crosses and she was really into playing the game with the toy. I picked my new left wrap sound. It is Sweet, Sweet, Sweet, but kind of like Swee-Swee-Swee. There is one rep where swee-swee-swee & choo-choo-choo clearly sounds like the music from Friday the 13th! LOL

I have not tried the Advanced Rocking Horse PartΒ  1 – Fast Forward, Slow Forward and side sends. I need to try that next.
I did try some spins. She did good! I had trouble with the left spin, but she forgave me. I’ll work on my mechanics more and try the side sends.

I need to dive in & try some of the games we haven’t started yet! I think the Backside Slice will be next.

I’m looking forward to your feedback & thank you! I think I just need a shove in the right direction.
