ParticipantCool and the good thing about living in Australia is that we have all our comps outside … rain or sun. Everything is on grass .. he will never experience A hard surface 😀

ParticipantHi Bobbie. Here is Sparky on the wobble board – its not his fave thing and I wish I hadn’t given my tippy board away ((( My full session with Sparky today was 5 minutes which I’ve edited down to 1.30 showing beginning middle and end and he does improve over the session. You can see he runs to it at first and then he gets a fright which set us back a bit. As I said in the intro – he has done the bang bang game on a very low see saw and he likes it so maybe I could try and borrow a mini teeter this week .. I know someone who has one and maybe get to practice on it rather than the wobble board. I think he’s much more comfortable on a straight up and down plank and maybe as well I can improvise at home ))) Or perhaps I could show you Sparky on the very low see saw?

ParticipantKim I thought your notes for Lesson 5 were amazing! You have really clarified what I need to do with Tiki moving forward. For me I can run Tiki in a jumping course set at Excellent Level where she gets to work at a distance from me and usually that distance section is pretty straight forward … this will take the pressure off her as she’s now at the top level in jumping and the courses are full of off angles and tricks .. not good for a dogs confidence. Thank you again for helping g us a lot .,,

ParticipantYes because you would have inadvertently forced the dog to run without engagement., that’s really interesting ., I know I’m repeating the above but that’s a ‘light bulb’ thing to say

ParticipantOk that’s really interesting., I’ve never looked at it that way. I paid money for 6 months just to walk to the start ., I don’t care about that
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantYes I absolutely agree with your assessment Kim … she does need access to cookies before her runs and this is I think why I was struggling to engage her yesterday. I was running through her happy tricks but there was no immediate reinforcement!!!! At trials she is super happy doing her tricks but then she knows immediately when we walk in there’s no reinforcement. Part of the problem is we often have to wait at the start but I can use reinforcement right up until we enter even if we are in a queue. Kim I think when I’m at a comp and she is not engaging I should abandon ? Do u agree. I can always tell but what you saw on the vid is what I get ..I also agree on all your points .. the leash area plus the disconnect

ParticipantHi Kim and classmates .. made it outside today!!! So we are into lesson 4 and today I can show you an example of Tiki doing ‘the thing’. “The thing’ is what she does in trials so I’m glad she put it on display for you today .. what she does is exactly what can/does happen in a trial environment.
So today … what was different? I can list a few things but I knew as I tried to engage her it became a challenge … she was not really focussed on me during tricks. First of all we were quite a distance away from the treats but I decided to try my tricks with a treat box as far away as it would be at a trial. In the video you can also see my little red stool which had her leash on it and perhaps she thought there were treats there as thats where she seemed to be running. So here is Tiki … in the video you see me standing on the course not knowing what to do … thats exactly what happens at a trial as well because when I call for her in this context she won’t come…so any ideas you have Kim will be greatly appreciated. By the 3rd clip she is more focussed!!! Here is Tiki:
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantAlso… just looked at one of your videos to another participant and I think also it would pay with Tiki for me to be much more aggressive…a bit hard on this course tho I think!!!
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantHi everyone… could get outside today … no smoke .. no fire. Its been over a week since we could venture out.
Anyway we practiced our start lines and a drill and I was very pleased with Tiki!!! i was especially pleased at my pre startline routine as the treat box spilled all its contents onto the grass and she didnt go off sniffing!!!Kerrie Weil
ParticipantThank you .. are u saying that the more I practice all of this it will become second nature to her and she will want to do this in a trial enviro?
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantSo we went to the park to practice 1. No food on body 2.its your choice. I think it went well. So I’m trying to practice what I do at trials. The first few clips are before we enter the ring. We spend much longer on this at trials and she’s always super excited as food is nearby. Second clips are where I have her sit between my legs .. take off her leash and then begin to play ‘it’s your choice’ A couple of times I held her too long thinking how will I reward her … I let her go once to the treat box and then I realised I would reward her with the channel weaves ahead which you can’t see ( the weaves also have a manners minder at the exit) I think Tiki did really well with this. I would also like her (us) to relax enough so that she could spin down to start line at a trial .. so what I see is 1. Tricks outside the ring when lining up with treat box handy 2. Enter ring and spin left and right as we walk down to the start line 3. Spin into my legs, take off leash .. play ‘it’s your choice’ and run. What do u think?

ParticipantHa ha you are right
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantSorry and part of the pattern is when we enter and walk to the ring I can’t lighten her up to play tricks 😀 So the little walk to the start is serious and that’s what I feel I need to fix 😀
