ParticipantHi there. Yes I was the problem most definitely because yes my expectations when we went up a grade and then because she started running away … I’m going back 3 years now. Then I started working hard to fix the issue like I am by doing this course ❤️ I don’t have the stress any more because I don’t have the expectation.. but we are in a pattern which I need to break . So yes I love what u say .. I also realised I let her break. What is the ‘it’s your choice game’ ?

ParticipantHere’s one of the drills from week two .. she’s loving it…
And now the happy tricks we do before we enter the ring …she is just like this at trials …happy until we walk in …I need her to be able to do the trick right up to when we set to start
Kim so I reread what you said. 1.I need to do tricks with her in the ring. At the moment the tricks stop as soon as we enter so its very serious… I need to find a way for her to respond to the tricks when we enter …2. I need to vary how many obstacles we do. So last year I worked for 6 months on one jump then out .. 2 then out etc etc. When we got to doing the whole course i stayed doing the whole course … I no longer varied it from week to week. Our comps don’t come back until next March so there’s no where to try this out until then )))

ParticipantHi there .. yes … Kim I also did this with Tiki last year for approx 6 months. And it was great for me and her Bec I knew I was disqualified anyhow so no nerves. I think she’s a lot better but that little walk to the start is still an issue. I’ve been out filming today and will send you my vids .. that was before I read your comments 😊
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantKim I think I need to learn how to get the tricks into the ring Bec once I walk in I can’t walk out. So it’s all good when we race back to the reinforcement station but once we enter we are stuck. You’ll see I am good with the tricks etc outside the ring .. I’ll show you. It’s the no mans walk once in the ring to the start?

ParticipantHi Kimberly. Thought I’d start writing my post now as I wait for my video to upload. What I thought I’d do today was to recreate my trial start lines taking into account your homework suggestions. First of all I have worked v hard on getting food off my body and for her to ignore the treat box. Today I have Tikis treat container back at the bushes.. I have put down a red cone which is my pretend entry to the ring. When I’m at real trials we can spin and have fun outside the ring as she knows she’ll get a treat but as soon as we walk into the ring it gets serious. She won’t do her range of tricks. But my magic card is that she loves to spin into my legs and she loves to bark .. even when there are no treats. So today you will see what my startlines look like and I would love to hear your thinking on how they can be improved. Today looked and felt pretty much how it does at a trial for both me and her. You can also see in the second clip I do struggle a bit to get her attention. You will also see my routine of her sitting between my legs which is when in a trial we have to take the lead off and give it to a person. Hoping u can help bec I do think my starts are part of the problem and she has time to get distracted. 😀

ParticipantThat’s an ‘excellent’ post. Thank you

ParticipantKimberly. Do u have any solutions to this problem. I think (coupled with a bit of handling issues) that my problem with Tiki occurs at the start line and u alluded to this earlier. So in Australia we have to walk into the ring (which is always on grass and rabbits or other animals may have been there overnight) with our dog leashed. So for me I’ve been frightened to take her off leash until she is sitting in place next to me .. that’s when I take off the leash. We then wait for the judge to indicate we can go … I think if I could taker her off when we actually just enter the roped off area and I could skip or spin her down to the start .. that would be ideal .. but if I take her off early like this she may just run away and go after some smell on the ground. I guess there’s no harm in trying bec I’m figuring if I have this right and she enjoys running again ., maybe she won’t bolt. I’ll try and find a video of our start lines
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantOh yes!!!! I can clearly see the late FC. Maybe this is why she’s slow on course as she’s not forgiving of me ❤️
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantThat’s Kimberly. I muted the sound Bec of the other dogs going nots 😀😀😀 Yes all makes sense. She has a tendency to bypass jumps on occasion
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantHere is Tiki today. She did great!!! My course was not as well set up as yesterday and a bit tighter but she was really happy and speedy.
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantKim .. on the 2 diagrams, the jump which follows the tunnel (jump 2) is out a bit so the dog has to change its line after the tunnel. Is this how you want it to be or should the jump after the tunnel be completely obvious. Yesterday I had to push a little to get Tiki to take jump 2 ?
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantAlso what do u think about me running further into the tunnel so that I’m not that far ahead of her… I liked this better..bec it means I can run faster..so that there’s more of a feeling of chase going on… I like run-in so its not a problem?
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantYes makes sense … thats so funny bec i thought I had completed my turns so well!!! Ok but I’ll trust her and go earlier…Also my set up was a little off skew .. can do better with this…
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantHi there Kim … here we are today ))) I would like you to note that I’m very very happy with my handling in this video )))) I’m also surprised that Tiki’s speed pretty well matched that of my other shelties who I trained on the same drill today…. I also changed my running approach towards the last few attempts where I ran more into the tunnel so that I was not too far ahead of Tiki in the circuit. I can notice a big difference in her speed when i did this and did not put myself out of reach. Do you think this is a good approach with her … don’t be too far ahead. She is 14 inches high. Here is Tiki ))
Kerrie Weil
ParticipantYes and my mindset with her has been ( up until now) that something will go wrong!!! But I’ve taken the pressure off … I guess the new trialing year will tell. Its not just me that expects failure…everyone does … “its just Tiki being Tiki again” people not being mean but just really saying how it is )))
Video 1 … I liked
how I had Tiki engaged during food scatter at 41 secs when she dropped and barked and wagged her tail
how she jumped up onto my legs happy during scatter 47 secs
how she engaged and had fun during high 5 1’04secsVideo 2
1st blind x nicely intimate showing her correct side after tunnel 32 secs
Connected and looked back at her during lead out
connected and looked back after tunnel 2Video 3
Even tho she stood up at start I liked that she was keen to run
Clear side change after completion of tunnel
Timely blind after tunnel 2Video 4
Confident run
Confident opening
Timely blind after tunnel 1
Very nice blind at 42 secs -
