ParticipantHello!
Worked on adding in the Backside wraps to the Wind in Hair setup today. Not too bad. Slight distraction when the jumps in the background fell over in the first rep, and on at least 1 of the backsides I was really blocking the wing though. Other tweaks to make?
Also did a bit of Serp proofing. Such a good one to learn!

ParticipantHello! Did some more things!
Find the Jump – added some more lateral distance compared to the last round, and it went well, although I think he had some questions on the last two reps where he did check in first and then found the jump. Do you think that was from the extra distance or that on those I was flailing my arms a bit vs. focusing on holding it down and back?
Diamond – any additional suggestions before I try to run more of this one? (except to avoid reverse spins π
Serps – did some more of this with left turns (the harder side for him) and those went great, but then a few right turn ones that were easy in the earlier rounds seemed to be troublesome this time. Can you see any reasons why? I was not as close as I should’ve been to the jump on the failed reps, but otherwise, any other reasons you can see?
Wind in the Hair Part 2 (Rear Crosses)
On this on I felt I was doing too much of the an ‘L’ move, cutting in behind him at the last second, on most of the reps. Boo. Other feedback?
Thanks!

ParticipantWe tried the serpentine again (left turn) and it went better. I did stay closer to the bar this time but did keep the angle easier to begin. He is a funny boy – completely starting without me! Ha! I do think I could’ve keep my cue arm farther back and chest faced more towards the jump. Thoughts?
Tried the Find the Jump on the other side this time and also ran ahead a bit more on most reps except the last. I think he found it enjoyable and seemed to do well.
Diamond setup… the theme of this one is YOUR LATE!π And again I think my arm back for connection could be stronger.
Let me know your thoughts!

ParticipantThank you, Tracy, this is fabulous feedback! I’m kind of relieved that you think it’s just because he’s a righty. And yep, totally agree I was very far away from the bar. I noticed that on the video too before I posted and think it’s just a mental thing for me that for whatever reason I think that being close to the jump will mean too much pressure and he won’t come in. But the other cues should override that.
Reacher and I can both can sleep on it and try again tomorrow.π
I did do one more thing at the end of the day! I might have gotten a little greedy there at the end but he was still having fun and got his reward so it’s all good. Thoughts?
Thanks!

ParticipantWow, it’s been awhile! Thanks to being busy and then sick (not Covid but a good reminder that we still have some serious other virus action out there), I’ve missed a bunch lately, but will try to catch up now. I’ll be enjoying a bit of a staycation from work this upcoming week so should have more time to play agility.
Here’s the Find the Jump game:
I do think he enjoyed this one once I got him in the right end of the tunnel!Send ‘N Serp:
I did two rounds of this separated with a break, but one side went very much better. Sending him from my left pretty much all reps looked like this:
But we really had troubles on the other side. I am not sure if the difficulty was because I totally lost my brain on the first rep and sent him wrong. Or if this is just a harder side for some reason. Let me know what you think!

ParticipantThank you for the great feedback. I’m glad you liked the connection – I was working really hard on it!
I’m not sure it was quite as good as in this Tunnel Exit Turns session, but thought it went okay other than the obviously wrong verbal in the first rep. Doh! And note, this was even after I DID practice that one once without the dog. I choked!π And the other issue was the distraction of the noise that happened in the shop on the second rep. So it was good practice to work through that.
Let me know what you think!

ParticipantThank you for all the fabulous feedback, and for he birthday wishes for Reacher! I’m glad you mentioned it because I actually forgot. Bad Mom! π
Sorry for the video snafu. Here’s the correct one, that does actually look a lot like the first one. I think I forgot to move the wing closer this time, but here it is anyway:
And I did another round of the Smiley Face game this time with two toys as you reminded me and with the wings farther apart and farther from the tunnel. Other than thinking the food toy was more rewarding this session I think it went a lot better. Well, other than that stupid throw on the first rep – what the heck was that?! π

ParticipantHi! I definitely have some catching up to do!
>>What is the glove made of, to make him love it so much?>>
The gloves are a combination of nylon/polyester, smooth leather and suede on the inside. But I think he loves the most because it smells so much like human. Reacher is the bitiest puppy I’ve ever had and loves to bite skin, a habit we are slowly, but surely, breaking. πSo we did the set point starting behind the bump – and of course after getting this almost all ready to go I could not find a darn jump bar or another bump so just tried it out with a rolled up towel. The distance was almost 4′ (about 3.75′) same distance as first setup. This time I tried with a moving toy.
Wing Wrap Proofing 2
Finally it’s not raining so we could get back outside!
It had been so much time since the first round that I think I forgot to move the wing a little closer to the tunnel as you suggested last time, but it was still good practice. I really tried hard not to move him much with the collar. I agree he doesn’t really like that, but he bites me all the time even when I don’t have him by the collar. He’s is just SO bitey!
Smiley Face
Again, I had a bit of collar work but I seriously was being much more gentle than I think it looks on video, both in this game and the next one below. I’m not sure how this went really. It wasn’t terrible but but also he wasn’t all that excited. I actually am starting to think he’s the first dog I’ve had that isn’t really a big fan of tunnels! He has kind of the same response at On the Run in a very nice, clean, shiny new one. Go figure!
BUT ALSO – I was a very bad handler and I forgot to put that toy in my pants today so that I could not switch it in my hands. I noticed that right away upon watching the video and was so annoyed that I forgot that!
Wind in your Hair 1:
UGH, same problem with toy switching in hand. Will NOT do that next time I train – promise!!
Wind in your Hair 1a:
Just for kicks I tried this one in another session (same day though) with putting the toy in position before sending. It proved irresistible for one rep. Again, I tried to be super gentle with the collar but he sure made it look like he was being a bit man-handled.
Should be having some more time now to train a bit more consistently – yay!

ParticipantSo I took your advice and got really creative with the toy making. The result is like some kind of alien toy thing, but he LOVED it! I took my two workout gloves that he loves so much and tried to stuff them in the hollee roller but they wouldn’t fit so I used the velcro wrist straps to attach them to the ball – one on each side. And because the velcro wrist straps are actually pretty short they stuck out like some kind of deranged Mickey Mouse ears or something. I should’ve taken a close up pic. Reacher thought it was the greatest thing ever!π
Unfortunately it was so great that it proved too alluring to hold a stay for the set point exercise. That and the grass was a bit wet and he didn’t want to sit on that. But we’ll work on it. Finding a fun outside toy was totally worth it! Here’s our session. I tried to time it but turns out when I hit the timer (set at 2min) I accidentally hit the clear button instead. So I went a bit over but there was a lot of tug time.
We also used that same toy to start the proofing game. My motion and position helped him a bit, but still thought it was a good start, but let me know what you think.

ParticipantThanks, Tracy!
Yes, he loves the milker with a glove on the other end of it. Ha! And I have a hollee roller toy but he’s not a big fan. Ronin was the same, both just ‘meh’ about it. So disappointing! π But I will figure out what to do for an outside toy he likes. I have some ideas and will just have to experiment a bit.
Managed to squeeze in a quick set point exercise after getting home from our trip tonight. I am sorry the session went a little long, but there was a lot of eating time. Let me know what you think of his form and the placement. I am thinking maybe just a little farther apart???
Looking forward to your thoughts.

ParticipantOff to a slow start, but managed to squeeze in the pregames on Thursday before heading out of town for the weekend!
I may have named them backwards I dunno.
Doing this on my cell so I hope it works!

ParticipantHello! Catching up a bit before the final day to submit videos.
1) Two quick videos for serp and threadle and I was interested to get your comments on my arm/body position. It felt right when I was doing it, but on the video I am not sure. Should I be turned a bit more towards the bar? I know these are shorties, but any other comments are welcome!
2) On the lateral leadout, he didn’t seem to know what to do with the wing! How can I help it be more clear? Other advice as I practice this one in the next couple of weeks?
3) Serp Countermotion – I think this went okay except for the first rep where I hesitated for some reason I can’t remember now and it threw him off, understandably.
I look forward to your feedback, and for MaxPup 2!

ParticipantGreat feedback, thank you! If you suddenly get an influx of Agility U registrations from MN you can thank Reacher for being such a superstar at his first agility seminar today!π It was a 1/2 day rear cross foundation seminar taught by an instructor I didn’t really know but had heard good things, at a place he’d never been. Rear crosses are my most intimidating thing to train so I was looking forward to the practice, but also just wanted to get him out to try a few things and see he how he’d do.
Turns out he rocked it! He was even quiet in his crate! What?! Yes. Truly.
The baby did awesome even though I realized when the presenter set up the first course that it was way over our heads. I thought they were starting at much more of the foundation steps of the rear cross. π³ But I figured okay, no problem, we’ll just break it down into small pieces and I paid him no matter what. And we have never done that many “jumps” (no bars for him) in a row, and some tunnels. But I never did more than three things without stopping to reward. He even did a moving serp perfectly. I put that target hand out at the perfect spot and to my amazement he came right in over that jump and then pushed out to a tunnel. (!!!π)
I rewarded for mistakes and successes and by the end of the seminar he was getting the rears with the cues. I was SO proud! People were amazed what he could do at this age and I gave your fabulous instruction all the credit. The precise feedback you give and working with the video has really developed my eye for things over time and that is making a huge difference. Thank you!!! They are probably all rushing over to agility-u to find you right now.π
One last thing, you’d be proud of the fact that although I accidentally did not have two balls like I thought in my bag, NOT ONE TIME did I do a ball switch from hand to hand.π I either ran without or planned in advance which hand I was going to toss with and started it with that hand no matter what. You were in my head!
Thank you, Tracy, for what you do and for making us so much better. You’d have been proud to see us work today.

Participant>>I donβt know why he was not going into the tunnel in the first video… who knows.>>
Yes, it was weird and I’m not going to overthink it. I’m seeing a lot of “teenage” stuff happening these days! π
Regarding adding a bit of motion on the serp countermotion, is this like what you mean? Let me know how this is looking at then I’ll move on to the advanced version.
I also worked on some simple decel. I got all the way out to the field and realized I had forgotten to stuff the toy in my pocket, so all I had was treats. Ugh. But thought I’d give it a go anyway. I felt uncertain about the stays and it shows. I wanted to reward back to him by throwing but knew he’d never find these treats in the grass. So, not the best set up session but let me know what you think anyway and I’ll give it another go. π
Thanks!

ParticipantHello! I am going to go back to the rocking horses with race tracks and also more work on the moving threadles, but for now wanted to move on to the Tunnel Rocking Horse and Serp Countermotion to make sure I got some feedback before the forum is officially closed. π
Adding the tunnel was… interesting. I was surprised that at first he seemed to be avoiding the tunnel. I’m not sure if it’s because wee haven’t done tunnel work in awhile or if was a lack of connection or both.
In this first video, we had enough tunnel bypasses that I stopped there where the video ended and decided I’d regroup on it:
That last session was early morning, and so then I went out for two more short sessions later in the evening. Those went a lot better! Still, I’m not completely happy with my connection to him on the tunnels. I think it needs more but tell me what you think. Also, as hard as I was trying to remember not to switch the ball in my hands I busted myself doing it a couple of times. This video is over two sessions separated by a short break. It’s all the reps but I cut out a bunch of the play just for video time’s sake.
Here is the Serp Countermotion. I confess this was the second round of this one. I did one round except turning the other way (he went right instead of left) but the video angle was so poor I’m submitting this one. His response was pretty much the same on this one. I think on the first rep or two I was not supposed to be turning my head towards him after throwing. These are all the reps, but I cut out the tug time. Let me know what you think:
Thanks!
