Hello, Tracy! Keiko and I worked on the serpentine/counter-motion exercise this morning. I am really pleased with her wait. I did stand out from the barrel as we went along, so there was space and she still needed to go over the bar.

It’s sad to see this class ending. I believe you mentioned you would be starting up another class that moves forward from this one. Is that still planned? If so, when do you expect to have it posted and when would it start? Thanks! ~Kristie

Hi, Tracy. Yes, I could do another verbal for the serps, but I agree that it is really easier to use a simple upper body turn – and more natural. There are enough verbals that I think are important to teach without adding another one. 😉 Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this with me. ~Kristie

    HI, Tracy,
Thanks for the specifics on the serpentine. With my other girls, I always used more body language. I was trying to see how much I could do things just on verbals. I think the serp needs some extra physical handling support, so thanks for the suggestions. She was asking about going out or on, and using the visuals will answer that. Thanks again! ~Kristie

A few days ago, you mentioned doing sets with both threadle and serp verbals to help solidify things for Keiko. Thought you might get a kick out of seeing her do some sets on a little mini-course I set up. Yes, the sound you hear in the background on the first 3 runs is indeed rain. We went inside, dried off and changed clothes, and went out again in a lull between showers. I thought Keiko did really well switching between threadles and serps, her pace is getting a little faster during the verbal sections, and she and I had fun with this. 🙂 ~Kristie

    Hi, Tracy,
One of the reasons I switched to the wing and jump bar was to have the visual bar to come over and reward after. The little bar on the ground just wasn’t doing it for me. 😉
Thanks for the suggestions about changing session structure to optimize energy and focus on the harder side. I didn’t realize I was using “OK” that much – ingrained habit of which I need to be more mindful. Thanks for pointing it out. And yes, I do mix in just regular run and go overs. I should probably leave in at least one so you know I did them. 😉

Good morning! Here’s our take on the Backside Foundations exercise. She is so used to “see barrel, run around it” that she wanted just to run to it (as you can see in clip #3). So I worked on keeping us connected, and I thought things went quite well after that. It felt rather easy, so I decided to change the visual a bit and use a wing with 5′ bar and standard. She did very well when on my left side. The right side was a bit tougher for her, and I didn’t get as much distance apart on that side. I know she was getting tired of the exercise, so that may have been part of it, but I also know that we have to work more on the right side in exercises because that seems to be her “weaker” side.
Hope your day goes well, ~Kristie

    Hi, Tracy,
We’ve been doing a little 180 vs. threadle, and some serps. I’d like the in-in to be a true verbal, so I’m focusing on a lack of visual/hand cues so she’s concentrating on the word. Another cue I really want to have on verbal is “back”. Looks like you’re starting to bring that into play, too. 🙂 Take care, ~Kristie

Hi! Thought you might be interested in seeing how Kieko is coming along with her in-in (threadle) verbal. I’m pretty pleased! 🙂 ~Kristie

    HI, Tracy,
Warm and humid, so I tried to keep Keiko excited about running. We did the Advanced set today – FC, post, and go! 🙂 She seemed to enjoy it – especially the send and go. 🙂

    Hi!
Yes, Keiko did a great job, didn’t she. It’s good to know I was “right” no matter which technique I chose. 🙂 I’ll probably mix things up so Keiko gets used to seeing me do “weird” things and still comes to the active side.
Stay cool and stay well, ~Kristie

Good morning, Tracy! When we work on this again, I’ll be sure it’s the first exercise Kieko does. We had worked on something else earlier, and she was getting tired so we didn’t do as much of this as I had planned. Personally, my biggest issue is being sure I do a BC and not a spin. I have used reverse spins a lot in the past, so when you refer to the motion in this set as a “spin”, I have to translate it to “blind cross” in my head. You’ll notice in the video that I did goof and do a spin once. Keiko didn’t seem to care. 😉 We’ll be visiting the advanced portion of this later – probably tomorrow am when the temps go back down. ~Kristie

Thanks, Tracy. She’s a smart little girl, and wants to do what’s “right” – as soon as she can figure out what it is I want. 😉 I, too, thought this went well. We’ll do some single post work to help cement the purposeful head turn. I definitely like the opposing motion aspects, and we’ll continue to do those, too. Take care, ~Kristie

    Hi, Tracy,
Keiko has had so much circling posts, barrels and wing work that when I put one in front of her she often automatically starts circling, so it was a little tricky going back to just a post and trying to catch her head turn – she was doing a lot of hand following. I think things went better for the purposes of this exercise once we moved on to the barrel and wing. Any suggestions or tips for us? Thanks, ~Kristie

    HI, Tracy,
I made up a little combo set that let us use the serp and threadle verbals, along with an out and a tandem turn. I was quite pleased at how well Keiko did. She really seemed to enjoy the motion and the variety. 🙂 I realize we’re not really doing sequences yet, but I wanted to see what she’d do. ~Kristie

    HI, Tracy,
First, on the serpentine stuff. I had been turning toward her on the “here” serp jump, and felt it was perhaps too much, so really toned it down. I am using my off-side arm/hand (with lotus ball in the hand) and shaking it as I give the verbal “here”. If you feel I should be rotating into her more, that should be fairly easy. I just need to find a happy medium. ;).
On the tunnel – yes, the far end word is “far.” (Makes sense to me and she doesn’t care.) 😉 In terms of more motion – are you saying you want me to run to the threadle end so I’m picking her up soon and can leave as soon as she shows commitment to the “far” end? I’ll have to try what I think you’re suggesting and you can let me know if I’m in the ball park at all. 🙂
    Take care, ~Kristie
