ParticipantAfter Keiko worked on In-Inβs , I changed the visual slightly ( no wings) and tried mixing up the Threadle and the serpentine verbals and visuals as you suggested. She worked sooo hard on this, and you can see on the last one that her brain was getting fried. She can be a real trooper, though sometimes she lets me know her head is elsewhere. π

ParticipantHi, Tracy. Here is some work on our βin-inβ with me trying to limit my motion. Keiko and I started from various positions, and our first piece was a release to go directly over the jump. She is working hard to learn the verbals, and I can see the wheels spinning as she figures out what I want her to do. What a good girl!

ParticipantHereβs a little of the βgo around and runβ barrel and wing jump activity you suggested. Keiko did pick up speed when she saw me leave. I was pleased she completed the wraps before taking off after me.

ParticipantThanks, Tracy. I figured the “mix-it-up” was next – proofing is the ultimate step, and when things are so similar, it is especially important. We’ll have to see what our energy level (and the temp level) are like tomorrow. We’re all wiped out now after a pretty but sticky/hot walk in the woods. π Take care and stay cool. π

ParticipantGood morning! 8am and it’s already muggy and growing hotter. Ugh! So Keiko and I didn’t do as much as I had hoped. Just a bit on “in-in” since that’s brand new and I want to keep the verbals going. She did well about seeing my hand then just going ahead to the lotus rather than waiting for a “get it.” Her last set cracked me up. I put her in a spot where she had to pass by the lotus on her way to the wing. Look at the careful avoidance she gave it!
Anything else you’d like to do with this now, or are we headed for motion soon? Thanks!Kristie Foss
ParticipantThanks for the feedback. Here are my responses:
Serps
Yes, she is funny about permission to go ahead. Iβll try your suggestions of cueing sooner and bringing the reward closer to see if that helps her drive forward.Barrels
Iβm pleased with the distance and sends I have with her, since Iβll need that down the road. You are suggesting that I send less and run more – is this so she sees more different types of motion and speed from me? Also, you suggested I exit forward which will cause her to speed up the chase. This is what I was doing with the reward on the wing side β to increase her speed and tightness on wraps. I can certainly do that around the barrel, too. Both with a reward and with my own running.Threadles
Yes, she almost stuck her nose up in the air over the MM. π I, too, loved the moment when the thought processes kicked in and she said, βso this is what you want!β Those a-ha moments are the best!Kristie Foss

Hello, again! Here’s our first work on “in-ins” (my verbal for threadles). I realize I moved my arm in the beginning to send her to the MM. She doesn’t really like the MM all that much – kibble is not high on her reward list. So I switched to cheese in her lotus ball, and, as you can see, she was happy to trot around the wing and head to the reward on her own. When we went to the most oblique approach from the other side, she did try to come over the jump once, and after that she seemed to be back “on track”. Verbals require lots of repetition, so we’ll be doing more of this!

Wing Wrap Foundations
Hi, Tracy,
I only had one barrel, so tossed in a large wing. Keiko didn’t seem to mind. πKristie Foss

Hi, Tracy,
Here’s some more serp prep work. I tried to vary my position and keep it more at the edges of the jump, and Keiko also was started from various spots. She did still check the hand and look to me for permission to get the reward. On the last set, I moved along, released, and sent her forward. That let us end on a more active, happy note. πKristie Foss
ParticipantHi, Tracy,
To answer your questions from the last 2 videos:
Yes, I’m glad to work on disconnection and reconnection on the barrel game. That will give us a chance to practice more obstacle commitment, and give me some blind cross practice. π
On the serp stuff – she has had a lot of training about not going to rewards without permission, so she is looking for some sort of “it’s okay” cue. I’ll go ahead and use verbal and try to keep everything else still. πKristie Foss

Hi! We did a couple of these, then I saw your response. So I thought I’d show you a sampling and ask if any of them are at all close to what you’re looking for. In the last one I finally gave her the go ahead signal. She looked like she was going to either stare at me all day, or just get frustrated and walk away. I don’t think I had the toy too far away, since it was at about the same spot as the other throws. Perhaps looking at my hand interrupted her flow and train of thought? I could have just given a verbal rather than the arm motion. Your thoughts? Thanks!Kristie Foss

Good morning, Tracy! Here are some sets doing the side and back send at a distance rather than right at the barrel. She seemed just fine with it. πKristie Foss
ParticipantHI, Tracy,
Thanks for the feedback. I have a question:
For the Serp work, you say No motion. So, do I take the stance (closer to the wings rather than in the middle) and give her her release and Get It, and no arm motion, no motion of any sort until after she is at the treat? Just want to be sure I’ve got this.
Yes, Around is the wrap word – it also works for going around barrels in NADAC.
The girl on my shirt is actually my very first Aussie – she was also my first clicker trained dog and my first agility dog. She was a special, once-in-a-lifetime girl. And she hooked me on Aussies. Keiko is our sixth. π

ParticipantHi, Tracy,
Here is our work on sending around the barrel sideways and backwards. We did a forward send, then, before I was ready to send her, I moved my leg to the side and Kieko just trotted around the barrel…She cracks me up sometimes.:) We did each send from both sides. This seemed to go very smoothly.Kristie Foss

Hi, Tracy,
As you suggested, we did some serpentine “prep” work without a hand target. Is this what you had in mind? Keiko seems to get the idea, no matter what angle I set her on. I don’t know if you can see it clearly, but a couple of the oblique angles were ones where she could have stayed on her side of the jump and gone directly to the reward. She was a good girl and took the jump. π Also, I’m pleased that when the treat is next to her, she still comes to the jump and takes it before going to the reward. -
