Keiko and I havenβt done this exercise for a while, so it was good to give it a review.Kristie Foss
ParticipantHi, Tracy, Yes, your comments did give me a chuckle. π Sorry about the video view – I realize the set-up wasn’t great. I hoped seeing her and my hands would be adequate. Didn’t think about how much the sun spot and the white bag looked alike. I did sit on the couch to begin with, but figured we’d be more likely to be standing, so switched to that.

Hi, Tracy. We hadn’t done the pre-games. I see you will be using them as a basis for some of the other exercises, so Keiko and I did 1 & 2 in a combined video to be sure we had this part down. Thanks!Kristie Foss
ParticipantHi, Tracy,
Yes, Keiko is a lot of fun! Thanks for the very thorough feedback! This is one of the things I love about online classes. We can’t always get such detailed input when we’re in a real-time class. To respond: In the first video, I was purposely throwing the item close since I was hoping to (ha!) maybe beat her – or at least tie. Didn’t really happen. Keiko and I have been taking an obstacle commitment online class, so she is very used to being sent ahead of me to an obstacle and/or reward of some sort, or out and back for the treat. Because of that, I wanted to start together. I agree with you that that I should mix up our starting piece so she gets used to all possibilities, gets a chance to really be ahead of me once in a while, and learns to like them all. π
As I look at the second video again, it is very apparent that her love of food affects her behavior, so thanks for bringing that forward. I wanted to see how she’d respond to different items, and this was a perfect exercise to test that out. Again, I agree that mixing things up will be good for us. I have been doing a lot of lotus placement and throwing (depending on the purpose of an exercise), and she’s quite good about that (yay, food). I have been looking for a smaller flirt toy, and just found a woman in England who makes them, so I plan on getting that as soon as possible. She does love the chase. I have tied strings to a couple of different tug toys so we could tug together after a set. This worked only partially. Sometimes, I hold the food off at first so the toys and tugs are more interesting. Thanks again for your comments.Kristie Foss

We worked on game 2. I’ve included a variety of clips so you can see how she reacts to different rewards. In the first 2 clips, I had a treat in my hand and then also threw one after we’d completed the circle. In the rest of the clips, I did not have a treat in my hand. I gave a treat from my pocket at the end of #3. In clips 4 and 5 I tried different toys. Keiko is only mildly enthused by most tug toys. She prefers food or “the chase” and works well for a lotus (thrown or stationary), loves tennis balls, and adores her flirt stick. I did try the lotus/tug but you’ll see she was most interested in the food. The other toy she has tugged with on occasion – but only chased it this time. For the final 2 clips, I used her flirt stick. You can see how much she loves that. Unfortunately, it’s not an easy “toy” to use while training. It’s hot and muggy, but she stuck with this exercise. She likes action. πKristie Foss

Here’s our take on week 1, game 1. Keiko loves food – she happily chases her lotus and I can also use it as a dead toy. I decided to try a brand new food/tug toy for this exercise, so that’s what she raced for in the last 2 clips. -
