Good morning & happy new year!

For the life of me, I can’t figure out what I am not doing right in this head turns thing. I watched your video a couple of times.

But maybe more important, do you have any thoughts about this: when Axel is done with his training turn, I can’t get him back to his crate. I did some video to help describe. If I praise him, but treats on his sniffle mat in his crate he will just stand there & look at me. If I pick up the ipad or otherwise ignore him, he will eventually walk over & get in his crate. I put more on his mat & shut the door. That doesn’t feel right. I started putting a chew stick or stuffed Kong, doesn’t help a lot.

In the first video I brought over his shuffle mat & lured him to his crate with it. I thought he might walk along with me on leash. The 1-2-3 game I tried in the 3rd video seemed the best option. Maybe that & vary that with a run outside right when we are done. Thoughts? The run outside seems a great idea now I think about it.

    Thank you!

Axel has been doing some things.
Shaping goat tricks for example. He is less interested in the toy lately especially if we are using food & the higher the value, the less interested he is. I am running across the room with the toy so that helps.

Serp with a jump. I am holding that target out there further as you said when we did it on the flat.

And then there was the get out prop… I wasn’t sure how to proceed after a mistake other than a restart cookie. So much value for the target that it’s taking a heck of a lure to keep him off it. Did not name the behavior – I think that will help.

    Thanks for looking!

The smaller mat & just tossing the ‘get it’ cookie worked great. I think the banana line will be coming up next!

Here is parallel path with a jump. He seems to get it. I am sure I can go more laterally away.

    Thank you!

How does this look for RC mat work?

We did the decel game again & driving ahead with earlier devel on my part – worked much better.

But what happens with this session? I think you are going to say it was too long & I let too many errors happen. The first couple of reps he let me have his collar, then he gets weird about it. Should that be a sign to quit there? I threw the toy on the last rep knowing he would take off (altho this time he brought it part of the way back) So then I do a scatter and he will not play with the toy again. I started keeping a snuffle mat in his crate & finish by scattering on it, saying get your snacks & then waiting for him to go in the crate on his own. Maybe the scatter & ‘get your snacks’ was just his signal to be done. Should I hold off throwing the toy unless I know I can get it back? Sorry this is so long, but I wanted you to see the whole thing!

    Good morning!
    Axel & I are back!
Axel was along for the stressful training session with the screaming BCs & did very well. Lizzie & he are BFFs so I have their wire crates side by side & cover them together. He was quiet in his crate unless someone walked right in front of the crate & then it was a normal kind of bark. He tends to be much more barky than the BCs so I am surprised by that. During the screaming he came out to do the pattern game, go around comes & take hold of the toy a little. He does not really want to tug there although he takes treats well. This time I brought the TOY THAT WILL NOT BE DENIED, long flyball toy.

Axel sometimes will announce at the end of the leash that although he is small, he is mighty. In our first puppy class the teacher told me a pattern games – walk along on the leash & count, 1, 2, 3, put a treat down in front of him. 1, 2, 3, tx. Magic.

Our touch games are going well although struggling with the counter motion.

He is better about that collar touch, too. Still keeping it brief.

    Thank you!

Here is some video that is incidental since it is not in our homework! I am very pleased with the lead out blind we struggled with a few weeks ago. Way embarrassed about my wonky line on the backside wrap. A German turn to a blind would have been best the way this was set up, but only now working on that with a barrel & ground bar.

On this, I had to go in so deep to get the 180, I couldn’t set the line for the next piece. I will set up some soft turn stuff. We did get some practice for layering though!

    Good morning,
I saw your post about over arousal webinar just as I was gathering my thoughts! I took Lizzie to a friend’s to train around other dogs. If you recall she does that flanking & pulling on the leash when other dogs are running. My two friends have two BSc who fricking scream their heads off when their siblings are working. Omg, it was awful. It was too cold to keep my dogs in the car although next time I will keep the car running and do that. Lizzie is always quiet in her crate but it had to be hard. I warmed her up while the screaming was going on & the dogs running. I was surprised how well she responded to the pattern games & the find my face game, but any delay in the game & she was back at it. Then she tugged her way out to the arena & focused on me well. I was not as well prepared as I could have been, but did have treats I rolled in a towel for her crate & scattered her snacks many times.

So, I will do the class & see what I can glean for her. Any thoughts on this now would be appreciated.

I set up a sequence from one of Hoke’s more advanced classes. Her blinds on lead out that we struggled with on week one of this class were much better. Things to work on that I glossed over: wraps with continued handler forward motion where I do all kinds of wonky motion. And commitment on soft turns! She understands verbal for wrap turns, but pulls off when indecel for soft turns. I’ll post video below.

Good morning. I hope you are having a good day. I have been watching the live feed & have caught some of my favorites, but not you yet.

One thing I know is I really want that independent running A FRAME! I know that is beyond the scope of what you can and want to do here. Any suggestions for a class? I still have Jordan’s materials on AU to work through on my own & that helps, but I have already had 2 failures training it!

Here is Liz on mid-course challenges. We did sequence 1 & 2 & left out part of 3. On sequence one there some late stuff on my part, but I pleased she read that late rear cross 8. Good girlie.

    Thank you!

I love what I am learning & appreciate your presenting so that I can understand. Lizzie does not bring the toy back so I don’t know what to make of that. I’ll do some video.

    >>I will try a different approach to tricks, too, cause what I am doing at home is not working. (high latency?)>>

**Tell me more! What is she struggling with?**

Lizzie is different to train than any dog I have had! She really wants to be right. Repetitions make her slow down & start to be sticky. That seems like it could be the latency issue or is it her being thoughtful? I have always trained tricks by repetitions and the dogs are thrilled to repeat. I need to get past the thought that things need to be repeated ‘X’ times for the dog to learn. I also expect the dogs to do everything very quickly. We have talked about this all through Lizzie’s training and I understand now that starting skills slow is good – she is plenty fast enough when she has learned a thing and her brain is still engaged. I really like that now I understand it. But I default to my old thought patterns.

Here are our pattern games, going on to tricks she knows. Do these look good enough to take on the road? I tried the pattern games for engagement last night when a friend came over to train. My building is much too small, so we were too close to the dog on course. I will work our pattern games at the training facility tomorrow. There will not be any dogs on course, but it sounds like a good middle step to do them there.

Not to throw another dog in the class here, but this is Axel who will be in the next puppy class. Is this what decompression looks like? We had been working on wraps for about three minutes, then I introduced a much newer skill. It was too much. This went on for about a minute & a half. He finally got thirsty & dropped the cone for a drink, then came out to play with the toy and then went to his crate with a scatter.

We worked on the BC with your feedback. It went great!

Thank you for all the great things!!

Thank you. This is the piece that didn’t come together with Hoke so I won’t make the same mistake again. I should use the board under it first for changes at first maybe. Then remove the board.

With Hoke I went to my 2×12 board at a slat when I was ready to put the mat in an obstacle. I think that caused some confusion with the stopped DW. I can sure use a flat or almost flat AF.

Thinking ahead since I am about to lose you – I am going to guess that as the mat gets smaller she will need to adjust her striding away from the trotting if she truly understands the behavior & it will will turn in to a pouncing thing. Ugghhh then u foresee the trotting coming back.

I will remind myself that I am not in any hurry. Thanks!

    Hi there.
One more thing, please. Here is our mat work from today. I am still getting the head check with just the ‘get it’ & tossing the cheese. She is pretty consistent there, so I could just bet on the 4th foot coming down, but then I would be rewarding the third. I just had to try it with a toy since Liz went to look for her toy while I was removing the board.

What are our next steps? Do I start making the mat smaller? Get more excitement using food? At this point in Jordan’s class (I looked to refresh my memory) she is getting a good solid pounce, as are you.

Hoke has a cruciate injury so we are out for the foreseeable future. That means I won’t see you and the group in SLC this year. I hate what he is going to have to go through. And, frankly, I don’t miss the trials as I do the seminars.
