ParticipantHi there!
I want to be sure to be on the right track with the contact work before we finish up here. Here are videos from this morning. Does this look right? If so, where do I go next?
Remember Liz thought the end of the teeter was a HOT STOVE? As you suggested, I set it up so I had about a cm of tip, waited her out to offer touching it and then threw the ball. We did that once in a session then went to do something else. By the 3rd session she was putting her back feet on it and front on the ground a second time in the session as we were going back inside. We have done this maybe 5 times now & I have let her offer it to me like three times, then took the ball away and were done for the day. We are about two inches tip now, so I will gradually add to that. My problem is that Lizzie loves her ball better than anything. I only used the ball for running through the channel weaves since that is something I didn’t want her to learn to do slow and she only trots to the MM. So…. now she is not keen to play with a tug toy. She is looking for her ball and pretty much stops playing with me while she hunts around for it. We did the serpentine jumping thing the other day and since she didn’t respond to her favorite tug toy, I got the flyball tug which did interest her, let her grip it and then ran with her to her kennel. Sooo…. I guess I treat this just like I did when I taught her to tug, which was I quit before she wanted to. Any other thoughts? We did do our blinds & spins things again today & she did show interest in her regular tug again. Also, I am not doing the teeter touch thing every day. Somedays we finish a little training for AG, then go to the sheep pen.
Here is our blinds & spins thing again. I feel like this is one of the most important things right now so I wanted to see if I could improve. My timing looks better to me. What do you think?
Hoke’s chiropractor is finally back from vacation and we see her tomorrow. She knows him better than anyone. Although he looks much better, he still looks off to me. Fingers crossed. So much planned – so many fun things to do.
Thank you!

ParticipantHi! Most of Lizzie’s work is going pretty well. We did struggle with the Big Lines & Lead Out during the zoom with blinds so I will try that again soon.
Here is our serp training. This is our second go – we did the other side first. Can’t quite get our jumps totally straight. I forgot verbal though!
We missed this exercise : Blind & Spins. This will help when we go back to Big Lines & Leas outs game.
We are struggling with the contact game. I want to do a stopped DW & running AF. I took jordan’s class with Hoke & did not get good results. I don’t think I ever got real understanding of the mat. Here is Liz’s mat work. Hoke’s looked very much like this. And I was clicking him for the trot across, too, & it looks just they just get it by luck. Your dog (& Jordan’s) have a definite pounce on it.
So I backed up to these games. Can you see what failing to get?
Thank you. Fingers crossed for Hoke. He is moving very bad in his rear legs today- skipping a step & feet together at a canter. I have seen this before in my first BC. I knew Hoke’s time would be limited due to HD & thought I would handle it. Reality, not so much. Leslie Eide developed his care program so I know to go there with diagnostics. Damn.Lizzie may actually have to do agility.

ParticipantHi there!
The Raise your Game on pack 5 was sooo much fun. I can see where I didn’t let him see that switch cue & turned without supporting the next jump so he came along side me. Good boy. I suppose if I am sure to give him the switch verbal before he goes in the tunnel, he won’t have the need to look at me first before turning.
So I was excited to do the jumpers course. arrgghhh…. All my usual mistakes are in here. Too much decel at 3 and we don’t have the weave skills for the entry I tried. Particularly with the DW parked right behind the entry. This should be one of points I need to be at to help him with the weave entry and there is plenty of time to get to the tunnel. Then that jump after the tunnel, I had the same problem as I had in last week’s course. I also saw this on some video of my last trial. Before a rear cross, I am pulling him the other way before starting the rear so he commits to the opposite direction or straight ahead.
Then on my second go, the layer falls completely apart. uugggly. I still have this set up. Should I break down part of it? Take one tunnel out & just simplify the layer?
Please help!

ParticipantGood morning!
These went fairly well, I thought. I can see I need to crate Hoke for my walk through. If I did the walk through correctly, he would be running the course! I was happy about our progress on the weaves & I left some of that training in. He was popping out at the end if the weaves when I layered the tunnel. I rewarded him anyway because it was such a good effort. We need to work on that turn away to the outside of the course after the DW…. I can set something up inside close to a wall.
You can see us running out of gas very quickly in the humidity. The grass is also very thick so it is like running in quicksand if it gets a couple of inches. Not enough time for that FC u planned before the teeter!
Thank you!

ParticipantCongratulations on your great run at the Festival with Contraband! I would love to see video & course map.
Sometimes I think my brain gets full so I do things but then don’t post. Must be some room in there now.
This didn’t seem to go well with the backward & side step compared to forward.
Thoughts? Thank you.

ParticipantThank you. We have a good foundation ready to go on the 2o2o off a board so we will build more value there. I will likely do 2o2o on DW anyway.
She loves her ball. Do I start with her just looking at the teeter? She will have to look away from the ball first. Not sure how to get it started. Hoke was scared of the tip & we were a couple of weeks with breakfast on the landing table & heart for one rep jumping on the end of propped up teeter. Then on to something else for lower value treat & he eventually went back for more reps & heart. But he knew what I wanted – he just didn’t want to. Not sure how we got to that point… He owns that sumbitch now…
Re-read this… Maybe build value on the slanted stable board with target, move target to teeter one inch off ground.

ParticipantLast week’s zoom class was super! You have no doubt explained it many times before, but I just got the part about determining the point where your dog is committed being part of the walk thru. I put tape on the floor where I thought those spots would be. That helped me focus on the dog & check if I was right. I was surprised to find I was right about where that spot was. The one line to a back side where I was wrong, I saw he was committed a good 10’ earlier.
Great class. Thank you. I will be back to the challenges next week. I have set up a few premier courses designed by the judge we have locally next weekend. I won’t say so publicly, but some akc judges have a happy knack for it, some not so much. I will be picking parts of courses! 🙈🤣

ParticipantHi there!
Our last thing (above) was some difficulty with the rear cross & we have worked in that with the tunnel to two jumps, four ways. The wraps are great, ‘go’ is great, backside needs some remedial & rear x is better. I will get some vid to have you check, soon. But the foundation teeter is a sticky wicket. I had the teeter out last winter & I think it surprised her. She is comfortable on the solid board between tables & with a 6” tip on the tables but we stayed away from the end & then just put it away. Now the end of the teeter is a burning hot stove. I videoed a few things. Any ideas?
Thank you!

ParticipantGreat- thanks. I thought open channels, too & have it set up already to work later today. We need that skill even for our AKC courses, at least to be able to layer jumps. I thought we had that but then I realized last weekend that with the weaves angling away from the line, it added another degree of difficulty to layering. Some day I will figure out all the ways it can go wrong & how to be prepared!
It helps when I can at least get as far away from Montana as SLC to watch other fast dogs & how people handle courses. There is only one other fast dog in the state. 🤔😀

ParticipantHmmm- cool that I can layer the DW to jumps – to the weaves, not so much! Maybe I should set up weaves with the jump wing barrier like we did to layer jumps & tunnels. Also work on our entries 🤣
Help!! Please…

ParticipantGood morning!
Hokey pokey & I moved the jumps in & did some dog training & then did the Up Your Game layer part 2. Went well, I think. You can see me pushing on his line so hard I push him out of camera range! When we changed direction, we had the same head check thing.
We have started setting up the full AG course & if it ever stops raining, we will run it.
Thank you!

ParticipantGood morning.
Yes, I have watched your young dogs playing the games slowly & then picking up speed. Hoke also was much slower as a youngster. I think the things we have trouble with now that he is speedy are things not trained as well as others. The zoom class you did with Bobbie B & the vet on how dogs learn was such a huge eye opener for me & changed everything I used to think about dog training. Your feedback & your instruction have supported that new understanding & shows me how to implement new training skills. It all makes so much sense. I see the same methods with my herding teacher although she would never think about it in the same terms. She always sets the dogs up for success & knows how to structure her training in such a way that the dogs learn but do not get to make mistakes. She does get to rely a lot on breeding, too. She is known nationally as a premier young dog trainer. Knowing what I know now explains how I totally screwed up Hoke’s herding training & why there really is no going back.
Can I still access the other zoom you did at the same time about puppy brain? I would love to have that info for working with the pup. He is a handful! I am working through Max Pup 1 with him & hope to catch up if you do a small Max Pup 2.
I backed up a bit with Liz & did the One Step game. It went well I think. We went back to fluffy blinds in the pinwheel & that went well. No video on that part.
Then struggled with the rear x. That making the right hand turn before the left turn is hard for me & I am cutting across too flat I think. Maybe I should back up to the last rear x work coming straight out if a tunnel & mix it up with some ‘go’.
Thank you!

ParticipantA bit of dog training! Who would’ve 🤔 thought?! Thank you.

ParticipantHmmm, this is hard. Getting a head check out of the tunnel. At :45 was my second try by running a line to 3 before he goes in to the tunnel. I think reward at tunnel exit on the line to the 3 several times
Linda Cummings
ParticipantThank you- I will study the video –
I am worried a little that she won’t go fast. Now I guess the answer is lots of reward, short sessions. She has great ground speed when she is gathering her sheep or running with Hoke. She is powerful too- the ground shakes😅Thank you
