    Hi Tracy,

Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for all the great feedback.

Thankfully, I do not need to worry about getting him measured again any time soon. He now has his permanent height cards for UKI and AKC.

DAH! I never thought to start him at a different jump to avoid him running to the judge and score table. It did let me know that yes, he will run to people in the ring. I have been having people in the ring in class, being the judge, leash runner and ring crew. I definitely need to keep doing this.

I did get video of his Jumpers run and in reviewing it, it was obvious that he was not engaged at the start line. He looked stressed, as he shook his head and then ran off to visit the ring crew. We need to continue working the “leash off” exercise for engagement at the start line and me making sure I do his “getting to the start line routine” (I have him do spins and hand touches).

He is not entered in another trial. I wanted to see how things went yesterday. There is a JAG UKI trial next weekend. Sunday has 2 rounds of Speedstakes. I am on the fence whether to enter, 1) the cold, 2) me running in dirt and 3) the distractions of the barn. There is still time to enter, so I am thinking it over.

    Hi Tracy,

Well, I survived Teagan’s first trial outing. We ran UKI Speedstakes and Jumpers.

    The good:
    – Ran both course NFC
    – He held the start line in both runs
    – He completed 10 obstacles in SS, it was more like heeling through the course as I only had him do a few obstacles before getting him back in check
    – Before his Jumpers run, I did work on Dialing him down, by having him fetch a tug toy. This really seems to help bring him down before entering the ring. I also made him “work” while waiting to go in to the ring. He completed 7 obstacles in Jumpers.

    The Challenges (aka the Bad):
    – He was CRAZY High trying to get him measured, barking and pulling. I need to get better at using the pattern games and obedience stuff when he’s not working in the ring. I didn’t have treats on me, as that makes him crazier on the measuring table. Bad me…I needed treats while we were waiting, lesson learned.
    – In SS, he did hold his start line, but ran to the judge and score table to visit, as they were right in his line of sight off the start line. I did get him back on course quickly.
    – In Jumpers, I was a bad handler, I didn’t do my start line routine with him and he ran off the start line to visit ring crew. He did come back to me when I called him, Yeah!!!. He then held his start line and completed 7 obstacles before the time ran out.

This was a great exercise to see where we stand. The T2T info helped so much to get us prepared for this trial. We still have work to do, but it is getting better every week.

    Hi Tracy,

Regarding Remote Reinforcement, Teagan is a typical Lab, so he is food obsessed. My challenge with remote reinforcement is being able to put the food up high enough so he can’t reach it. In the house I have high places, but do not have this in other places where I train. Is it okay to put the food in a closed container, so if he goes after it, he can’t get it until I give it to him?

    Hi,

Well, I finally put my big girl panties on and entered Teagan in his first trial. I entered him in Speedstakes and Jumping in a UKI trial at the end of the month. The plan is to run them NFC as I am still getting some running off and sniffing in class. I guess we will see how it works out.

    Hi Tracy,

I was going through The Volume Dial material today. I have been using this technique of having Teagan do tricks when we are waiting to go in the ring for class and when we enter the ring in class. When we are waiting to go in the ring, if he does not get a high level of reward, he starts barking at me…demanding a treat. Do you have any suggestions to help with this situation?

So, we tried the Send and BC exercise yesterday. Teagan got distracted after he found a rib bone in the grass. I assume some animal dropped it in my yard. Luckily, I got it away from him, but he kept looking for it. When I did get him back to work, I had a brain blip as I kept doing a RC on one side.

We tried again tonight. We did better this time. I think my first BC was late, but hope the others were better. I am having to wait to do these in the morning or evening, when it is cooler.

Thanks for the feedback. I always have trouble keeping my arm low and my crosses, especially FC are usually a little late. No excuses, just something I need to continue to work on improving my timing on crosses.

Losing so much training time sue to the excessive heat, I probably pushed him a little to far. I will try to be better at keeping the session short.

Thanks, Tracy. That gives me an option when I can’t get the tunnel set-up.

    Safe travels.

    Tracy,

Is there a way to do the exercises with the 3 wings and tunnel, without the tunnel? Is there something I can put in place of the tunnel? TIA

Finally got back to MaxPup today after trialing over the weekend. We worked on the BC/FC game. He did fine on the BC, but seemed to be done when I tried the FC version. We will try again another day.

Finally a day that is not brutally hot. We worked the Connections game and the Wrap game. I couldn’t quite remember the Wrap sequence, LOL, but I think we were close.

It continues to be hot & humid, but we were able to try the Lazy Game Part 2 tonight. He did great going left to right. I did have to go in closer to the middle jump when we went right to left. We even tried adding some speed and he still did well. IT was too hot to lug out the tunnel for the next game.

Happy 4th!!! Teagan and I did the Lazy Game, but I did not video it. He had no trouble. Today we tried the One Step Send game. It was hot and humid, but he seems to get it. I have 2 videos of our efforts.

Thank you for all the great MaxPup2 games. Teagan and I learned a lot. Unfortunately, it’s been raining so we did not yet get to do the Starfish game. We will try it once we get a dry day. Looking forward to MaxPup3.

Teagan and I tried the Backside and Countermotion games yesterday. My first 2 attempts at the backside went well, then something came apart, but we got it back. He seems to be getting the countermotion, though I need t move earlier.
