ParticipantQuestion re: magic word:
I use ready a lot already in our training to try to build engagement and excitement. The response with it is not necessarily to look at me but more to look forward or toward whatever (usually a toy but also a jump). Should I continue down this path or possibly develop another phrase (do ya wanna?!) to encourage engagement more with me where I reward for looking to me and not so much checking out what’s ahead?

ParticipantThanks again for all the super helpful feedback on that last post!
Here is some of the serps and stuff work: https://youtu.be/IZwUTEuO10Y
I’m sorry that it isn’t as paired down but this is a couple sessions in one and I left one longer portion unedited to show how I worked through it.
Unfortunately we had a visit from neighbor dog in the middle (you get to see its cameo) so then I tried a couple
Little things after that and was rewarding most any commitment to agility. Ended up taking a break and letting her cool
Off In AC then coming back out later. That backside felt reallllly awkward! I admittedly didn’t watch the video and just viewed the PDF so I bet if I went back I would see it handled differently or more clearly than I was.

ParticipantOh man! We did the forced front exercise this evening and my girl rocked the forced fronts. Seriously pleased with that piece of this puzzle. The rest of the sequences we struggled with, hah. I had a couple broken start stays. Will really try hard to reinforce the staying more.
Are you handling 3 as a backside? I watched closely and listened a few times but couldn’t tell if you were giving a verbal for a backside or not. We eventually got that but failed on that multiple times. And since that obstacle was after a new hard skill I didn’t ever really stop her after missing the backside. Also I was confused as to if I was handling it well at all so I kinda didn’t expect her to do it if that makes any sense.
I left a little footage in as we had some oopsies just to show how I worked through them. She’s doing a much better job of staying up beat even without immediate reward, I think, compared to the last session of max pup.
And I tried to revisit the rears from two exercises ago after the forced front exercise but the first one she turned too soon (on ground) and the second she was contorting mid air.
Lots of stuff in this one. Felt like way more than a four obstacle sequence haha.

ParticipantWill revisit those rear crosses and try to show them better instead of driving ahead! Here’s a session I never posted from the weekend. It’s the long lines and lead outs 3. We had quite a few distractions (a REALlY scary birds nest on the ground and Arty’s sister coming out on to the porch while we were working) that we were working through so slow to start but happy with how things ended. I wanted to practice that reverse spin kind of thing but the first time I did it I should have been more thoughtful about how I was struggling to maintain her connection during the distractions.
Now we are off to get a session or two in during the break from rain!

ParticipantSo much awesome feedback on that last post, thank you!!
Started our day with mat work and
Had the PT on one side and I was ready to engage with toy on the other. I moved each time to change my angle but left PT in place. She did great! No video but she was thoughtful each rep and happy and moving. Only one miss and that was when I was pretty lateral to the mat (we’ve previously done some of the banana lines with toys) but that’s one out of probably 20 reps. And we had another neighborly dog distraction but she stuck with me and the mat and the pet tutor. Win win win! Then a little later in morning we did the 2nd of the lines and lead outs from the seminar. Tried working on both sides of the jumó after the tunnel. The rear was spotty the first time but she tightened it up. Overall really pleased! I didn’t handle the finish well each time. I think I wasn’t sure if it was like an assumed go line or a turn I needed to handle and for the way I built it it seemed she did better with me handling it more with cues to turn a bit. https://youtu.be/OD_f6l3Vbuk

ParticipantThree videos coming at you from yesterday and today!
We’ve got winging it with the tunnel. Those tears are hard work! Had some distractions from neighbor dogs but worked through it. Happy with her Gi lines. Will keep working on those rears and the tunnel turns. https://youtu.be/KWN21CU2k9E
Next up we did long lines and lead outs exercise 1. I think we both enjoy these exercises where pieces are coming together and we get to move! I think I was adding on some
To the finishes of multiple exercises. Then I was doing so but not cueing what I wanted at all. But overall I’m
Pretty pleased. She stood up with one of her sits and I had to reset her bc she got turned a bit. Will continue to work on backwards rewarding for the stays. https://youtu.be/nBGCzGUNjaMThen debuting her fancy new haircut, we went back out for some contact mat work in the shade. Stole some batteries out of something else so I got my pet tutor working AND got to video at the same time. I think her accuracy was pretty good this session. I pretty much did 2-3 minutes with pet tutor and 2-3 min with toys. She was not super motivated by this particular toy so she kept the accuracy. But to your point on previous post, she definitely looks to side for the toy as she’s hitting mat compared with the pet tutor. I think she also had a touch more enthusiasm
Today with pet tutor than the last session Just bc I started with it and she had recently been reminded of it’s value. I feel like if I’m
Not adding my motion, our success is pretty high with both trainer and toy. I’ve tried adding motion in with toy and she’s not ready for that for sure.
Sorry for so much at once!

ParticipantHi again! Back at it this week after the beach. Spent Sunday at a seminar so we dove back in head first. This morning we worked the start line exercises and the contact mat.
I feel awkward with those backward rewards which tells me I need to do more of them to keep paying her for those lovely stays. I think I missed a couple videos but we worked through all three examples and did some back chaining before each one. Overall I’m pretty pleased!
Contact mat: no video bc my remote trainer clicker is dead so I had to operate it with my phone instead of videoing. We’ve been doing most of our mat work with toys. This morning I did a session with the treat trainer and she was definitely less drivey but she hit it every time. Also was able to be more precise working through different approaches since her brain was on instead of being 90% on the toy and 10% on task. Just now we picked a shady spot and did some more with me staying stationary with a high value toy in hand. She got 80% of the hits and the other 20 I spun her back around and she thoughtfully hit the mat before flying off for ball. I’ll try to get some new remote batteries so I can share footage with you but I’m thinking though the drive wasn’t there with the remote trainer, the accuracy was, so maybe I should continue to train this both with toy and with remote trainer?

ParticipantFit in a little serpentine work before a week of vacation! Girls are coming to the beAch with us so we’ll be getting a little agility break (though I’ve got the contact mat packed and planning on working on some
Of the sitting while
Im in motion from a few weeks back.Anywho, did serpentine exercises this week. Didn’t video them all but here is some: https://youtu.be/lRnbHWhSaYU
We were better on one side than the other with the single jump. With all three I was pretty pleased both directions. Worked it coming out of tunnel as well. I also felt she read it well when I did the tunnel and two jumó exercise. As I watched with the three jumps I started to think about how I will signal threadles differently. Maybe I need to start teaching that to make sure I’m not patterning the serpentine pattern? I always have to worry about something, hah!

ParticipantStill feeling like we are playing catch up but the exercises from the second seminar we are struggling with. Did agility all day Saturday at a seminar and tried working some of the wing with countermotion Friday and Sunday but I’m
Feeling very clumsy with this. My brain struggles to know what I’m
Asking of the dog if there is just a wing. Revisited the wings with counter motion today and this is the video of that (https://youtu.be/ycvnHWULWrk). Then later in evening we did the exercise with two wings and a tunnel but I struggled even more with that one. Here is that one. https://youtu.be/e1GL5HrYnpkLaura Niday
ParticipantI wish I could just keep you in my ear telling me all these things all the time! It’s so hard to remember it all but you have such an eye for all the ways I can do better for Arty! We will keep working on all the little details.
Here is our first attempt at the straight 4 ways. What a fun game! I skipped the middle section accidentally without the wrap before the tunnel. I know we need more practice with our backside so our faults there are definitely expected. Also had a total
Mess up wheee my insulin pump (attached to my body) fell off my shorts right when I was trying to signal the backside, hah. Overall I’m pretty pleased honestly for a hot afternoon session that went a little long. Look forward to your thoughts!Laura Niday
ParticipantOkay, one more video for the evening. I think I may have tried to squeeze in too much training too soon for Arty this evening. She had about 30 minutes in the AC between sessions and both sessions were about 8 minutes total but this one you’re about to see was much harder for us. We got stuck in the beginning with just the first jump and wrapping back around. She got stuck similarly last week in our in person class where I was queuing a rear cross with direction change back toward the takeoff side of the jumó and she just wanted to change direction on the flat. Maybe I need to work more on my jumó commitment and one step sends? Or am I just behaving differently as I try to get ready to run back toward that tunnel and not supporting enough.?
When we got a little stuck the first time I took a break and just did some single one step jumps and she did fine and committed well to those.
Then you’ll also see her starting to cross behind me in an odd way that doesn’t happen often for us.
I’ll be very interested to hear your thoughts on this one!

ParticipantRe: teeter training for down behavior, I did less shaping and more queuing of it. Is it obvious? Hah! I’ve already messed up my jump with the setup I used for that video so I’m going to have to get a bit more creative.
For starters this evening we’ve got the fluffy blinds and our first ever attempt at the sitting in motion. Why didn’t I ever think to train that earlier?? What a great behavior to train! We obvi have plenty of work to do on that one but it’s easy enough to work in in a lot of different environments. I did also move out my circle a bit for this exercise compared to the last video just to give us more room open up and move. I was pretty pleased with the blinds (even if I did the a rear accidentally to start with). I liked her drive overall in this session.
Laura Niday
ParticipantSqueezing in a little more work this morning. We tried mountain climber. Ended up raising the teeter to it’s medium height and using a jump. She was more hesitant at first but by the last rep I felt we had more speed. This also helps me isolate the down position better than the way I was working it since it’s very obvious to her and me
When she’s not fully on the board if it’s suspended in air.Did the timing game and I was trying to be very conscientious. I was pleased with this. Then with the wraps I think the more I get in my head and
Think the more hesitation she gets. Also doesn’t help that I was using wrong verbal first time, hah. By the second or third I tried to be more confident with what I was asking and not be as hesitant and thinking. And she smoothed it out.

ParticipantWe’re back in action! Here comes our first video for the class. Did some lazy game part two for warm up then added a little speed. We worked over the last couple days the single step sends and more lazy game. We are 13.5 months old now so you’ll see me slowly working up the jump bars once we get a little further along in our recovery from spay.
I also added a little clip of where we are with teeter. We did bang it game early on and I’m now trying to isolate and enforce my desired end teeter behavior and get her driving into it. I’m feeling conflicted on how much to keep going where we are vs how much to go to the exercises you’ve suggested. Any advice here? I essentially try to get 2-4 repetitions on the teeter amidst other training during the limited number of minutes we have with tolerable weather and sunlight ☺️
Laura Niday
ParticipantThanks for reposting! I did 5 feet for the first round of accordion then last jump moved out three feet each time so first was I guess 8 feet then 11. Will try again with a little additional distance! Thanks! We’ve got lots of homework between sessions but loving feeling little pieces start to click!
