ParticipantMy dogs learn nose touch very early as part of recall, but I never worked on extended touch. I tried you method, but couldn’t get it to work as the moment my other hand moved, the dogs would stop the touch in expectation of the treat. So I tried to vary the method by introducing hand movement and rewarding when the nose follows. Some parts in the video might appear as inconsistent rewarding but Bingley does not use his nose consistently- rather he is opening his mouth and touches my hand in pretend mouthing action.

ParticipantHi Stefanie,
I have transferred the Fetch to different toys. The last toy was a new one. And we had just practice nose touch before the fetch so Bingley gets confused by the outstretched hand. It’s clear that he doesn’t quite get the verbal cue yet. Watching myself I also noticed that the marker is not consistent- the marker is YES or a clicker. Maybe I should stick with the clicker, less confusing.
The background noise is one of my other dogs. I thought working with distractions might be good. Bingley is not the most focussed dog I know, so for him this was quite an achievement.Martina Saldanha

ParticipantHi Stefanie,
I have got a video but I haven’t figured out how to upload it. Are there any instructions somewhere? Did I miss anything?Martina Saldanha
ParticipantHi Stefanie, we had a great first session but I was so glad that you showed the fetch with an ‘untrained’ dog! I had to try several different toys before Bingley decided that he liked the official dumbbell best – not what I wanted really…We started with very small steps, touching with nose, then mouth, then pick up. I used shaping and was very surprised and happy to see that Bingley does have a brain after all 😂 He worked it out all by himself and managed to bring the object back to my hand!! And that’s where I stopped immediately to end on a high and gave him the rest of the treat pot. Our session was about 15mins and we ended with a big round of playing with his favourite toy.
