Thanks for the feedback! I am jumping for joy since I usually do not do well on anything requiring body coordination.

He is definitely having some footing issues. The footing is a challenge here with not being able to put in grass and the water restrictions to even wet the sand. That is combined with our sand losing the finer pieces over the years. I have started calling arena folks to repair the sand but the small arena is not that interesting to them. I have a new contact this morning to try and hopefully they can help. I am likely going to put in a textile binder this time around.

Hi Tracy, I took Ronan for a spin with the wraps tonight. I moved all the jumps out about 1/2 a width to give him more space. I tried to keep the arm lower in this one. I found myself not facing the middle jump in a few reps enough and tried to repeat them focusing on that body position.

    Wrap Session 1

Hi Tracy. We filmed our first session of wraps with Karena and Ronan (I played earlier in the day but without film evidence). We were focusing on our shoulders and arms at the zenith of the pinwheel. We are going to try expanding the pinwheel to give him more challenge next time.

Got it! Thanks for the detailed explanation Tracy. We worked on that specific aspect of shoulders tonight with the next step in that series and have some video to post tomorrow. It might take me a while to break the high arm- bad old habit.

We are the high arm bandits 🤣🤣
“ Karena – you had a bit too much shoulder turn on the right and not enough connection (a high arm will block the connection) into the send at 1:09. ” can you clarify this a bit more for me? Where exactly do I have too much shoulder turn? Do you mean that keeping my arm high at times blocks the connection between dogs eyes and my eyes? Thanks. Karena

    Thanks for the feedback Tracy!
We played 2 games today including the lazy game and Timing and connection game (first time). He was a bit excited today too so we did more of the “catch” game in between reps.
For the one step sends, we focused on sending him and just going.

Glad to be baaack doing the ‘gilties with Ronan! He was a bit naughty with his sit stays tonight (broke a few times and some elevator butts) and so we started to reward with a “catch” every 3 reps or so. He was very excited to play! I (Karena) have a left wrist thing going on so might have switched the toy to avoid a twist when Ronan grabbed the toy.
We didn’t do any of these drills tonight with a left or right verbal because we are still deciding what we want to call a pinwheel versus a 180. I like the idea of doing “left left left” for a 180 and then we just say a single left for when we want him to turn left. Is that too confusing? My current border collie was only taught a single left or right verbal and I do say it multiple times if I want her to do the 180 versus the pinwheel (I now say nothing or “over” for jumps in a pinwheel). But honestly it did take her a few years to really understand that because I never taught it. Any suggestions?

    Hi Tracy,

Karena slowed the plank down a bit to work on that back end. We raised it up a tiny bit more onto a couple of cinder blocks as well.

I tried to slow it down a bit. It seemed Ali when I was doing the drill but seemed quick on the video! I raised the planks onto some bricks. Ronan did not seem bothered by the 2 inches, LOL.

Week 1 games. Tonight we did the lazy game and worked on plank confidence. It was still warm so it was nice to do some chill games. Ronan has seen the plank before in the context of his running dog walk training so I didn’t anticipate any hesitation in him getting readily on it. We moved through the steps of 1) no handler movement, 2) handler movement, 3) tossing the treat off at an angle, and 4) turning around on the plank. How did Mom manage to toss a treat right on top of a pile of dog poo asked Ronan, LOL. At least he didn’t eat it.
For the lazy game, he was better than last time and didn’t really need a treat toss between jumps 1-2. I even got him to do all three a few times without the cookie toss. I didn’t add too much distance as it had been a week.

    Hi Tracy,

Here is the first video! We worked on the lazy game and winging it. I think Ronan liked wingin’ it a bit more 🙂 Let me know what you think!

Mike is out of town for a few days so I get Rony Pony all to my self, tee hee hee :). I did one final session of the lateral lead outs to see if he had any latent learning from yesterday. He had much better jump 1 commitment today :). I then went back and revisited the get out drill because we hadn’t really worked on that very much. I started with last motion and then added more motion. I also started with the wing very close to the jump initially and then moved it out a few times. It went well! I seem to be more comfortable using my dog side arm to send him out. Karena

Today I did the lateral lead outs with Ronan turning left (yesterday was all rights). Initially I just did the same as yesterday- making sure he committed before taking off. I then tried a few different drills trying to takeoff earlier. I could take off earlier for the serp but he’s not ready for the others yet. Bar is still at 8”.
    1) I’m not facing the bar enough for the serp?
    2) I tried the throwback as you described. I realized I switched arms yesterday. It went ok, he read it better for rep 2.
    3) for the handling moves where he came in to me when I tried to take off earlier, should I do a toy drop to keep him committed to jump 1? Or just back chain and start him between jumps 1 and 2?

I did a session (#2) of lateral lead outs tonight. I was bad and initially forgot to walk lateral to him first and then towards the wing. I made a note in the video where I started to do it correctly. We had some bobbles and I seem to have forgotten to do the one with the FC back to jump 1.
