Here is our video from a few days ago. I realize I was using the wrong turn verbals on the tunnel exercises. Sigh.

His brain was getting fried by the end of the session, so we didn’t complete all the sequences yet. Still working on his focus when cute Shelties are around. Self-control requires a lot of bandwidth, so I am upping the distractions at home when we train in the hope that when we get to do the class exercises on the rental field, with others present, he can focus. A work in progress.

Thanks so much! I was confused about the different arm position for the brake vs. spanking. Your description helps a lot.

Thanks so much. This all makes sense. I will reserve the reverse spins for really tight turns lest I end up having to spin my way through every course. When he missed jump #3, I don’t think he was thinking back side. I think he was considering having a sniff or pee by the wall, so I was very happy that he came back and chased me instead! He really likes that part of the agility yard…

Here is our skill set practice. I think I need to rent the field to practice more soft turn braking because it’s really quite tight in my backyard.

    Thanks!

We did the other Novice sequences this week. I didn’t think he was ready for the courses yet. I set up some jumps to practice the turning and running away and also the reverse spin, so he could see turning should happen even when there is motion. Apparently, when I reverse spin, I forget to use my left and right verbals. I never need to reverse spin with Pixey, so I need to become more fluent in the move. I think it will be a good tool for handling courses him.

At :45, he was chasing a bird’s shadow.

What skill sets should we be working on this weekend? We did a couple virtual UKI courses last Saturday. Showed the same holes as here, but an excellent opportunity to see where we are. I plan to devote the next several days to the things I can practice in my small yard.

    Thanks!

Wow! Thank you. So much good information here and this is exactly what we need. Every other agility dog of mine has responded to namenamename as a turn cue, so I was pretty flabbergasted to see it fail so miserably here. Check is a wrap, but by rep 4 I was desperate to get some kind, ANY kind of turn, in motion. A total bandaid in the moment and I knew it, but I did it anyway! I also made a note after that to keep working on his left and right, which is something else I can do in my little yard.

I really like the turn and go the other way idea and rewarding when he arrives. He greatly enjoys running in big loops and circles with a toy or without a toy. Always has, from the time he was a baby puppy. Drive bys are quite common, where he will swoop by and keep going. I have been working on having him come in to me for a reinforcer and then releasing him to go run again. If I had to guess, I would say he finds his own motion very stimulating, and I think reinforcing, as well as stress reducing. So if you have thoughts on that, or games or things we can work on, please let me know.

Again, thanks so much! Your feedback is terrific!

Thanks, Tracy. You are absolute correct on all fronts. I was thinking “fast forward, slow forward, rotate,” but there wasn’t really enough room for that. I definitely need to exaggerate it and do it faster in small spaces. When there is more space and more speed, it’s a whole different ballgame. Exhibit A. Sequence 1 in a big yard. 😳

Hi, Tracy. So nice to be back at Agility U! It looks like skill set 4 and 5 are identical. Also, I am confused about how much video we can submit. Is it two rounds for skills and two rounds for sequences and two rounds for courses? Do we have to submit all video for each skill or sequence or course at the same time? Or can we space out the skills etc. over a couple days, by doing a few each day?
