ParticipantHi Tracy,
Well it looks like I really dropped the ball on this one. Session 4 & 5 just got away from me. August was a crazy family month, which while fun, I find very distracting from training!
Regardless, I enjoyed Camp, as always. I will refer back from time to time, and continue with some of the exercises. I really like the sequences! Thanks again for all your help and patience with us.
Until our paths cross again… stay safe, and run clean!

ParticipantI had a great training session this morning …. And recorded a lawn chair!! 🤬🤬. I forgot to change the camera view. So I went back and ran Demi again. Other than the very beginning, this is definitely not a baseline video.
:03-:02
Whiskey push at 2 was 6 sec.
Wrap at 2 was 5 sec.
Not a fair comparison since I think if I had hung back and pushed more more for the whiskey it would have been faster. And I didn’t cue the tunnel properly.1:30-1:40 FC was 10 sec.
1:46-1:55 BC was 9 sec
2:01-2:11 Wrap was 11 secIn the last sequence I think the me-me would be fastest, but we don’t have that skill. I had paralysis by analysis on that move. I don’t have 3 reward cues.
Regardless, I ended up using a lap turn, it worked but, in timing to the start to #4 ….
9 sec vs 8 sec with the threadle/lap. That surprised me, then again her commitment to #3 backside could have been much better!!I like comparing the times. However, I don’t think my faster time was necessarily my best handling choice in some cases. Rather I think I need to improve skills to increase the “slower” time.

ParticipantWe ran sequences 2 and 3. Following each baseline, I didn’t get to training yet, but I did run each successive run with previous errors in mind.
Sequence 2
I didn’t think Demi’s first run was horrible. I had a number of options 3-4. The way I did it made it, I tried to be clear to turn and not take the off course. She did ok, but I think I could have made it smoother. I didn’t give her any decel cue. We need to work on those.I tried to make sure I supported the “out” of the pinwheel but still be able to get to the FC. I thought she did well and read it. I could have been a bit sooner on the cross.
With Wilson I used more of a tandem 3-5. He reads them, and it’s often my go-to move with him. A decel at 4 might have made him tighter, but I think he was clear in where he was going, and thinking about some of your previous comments, I’m not sure tighter would mean faster for Wilson.
I thought the close-close worked well 8-9. Kinda wish I had tried that with Demi in lieu of the FC.
Sequence 3
The backside of 2 offered a number of options. I didn’t try a backside push bc I didn’t want to get caught behind the wing. I opted for the FC push and in-in. I think both would have been smoother had I gotten out sooner. For my training I think I need to make it clear that in both of those moves, they need to go back over the jump.In 5-6-7 I was afraid of the off course so I called her in. It was too much and ended up calling her off 7. I fixed it the next run. A tunnel break before, or even a name call after the tunnel would have avoided that wide turn and sloppy FC. My bad!
Why did the bars come down?

Participant🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
I get exactly what you’re saying about the spins.
Yes, I do try to control the turns. Wilson has made me gun shy since I often pull him off. Your suggestions of going in further for the tunnel and pinwheels makes sense. There’s kind of a fine line between controlling the turn and going in deeper, also for more control, right?
My dig-dig means take the jump and come back to me.
These 3 different turns are interesting. I’m not sure I ever put it in that perspective. Should be fun moving forward!
Thanks!

ParticipantDEMI … Baseline went relatively well. 5-6 could have been a little tighter. Would have helped if her handler remembered the course!
Added dig dig to get her tighter at 5.
This was the first time she saw a spin and going behind me on
8-9. She was a little shakey.
10-11-12 was a challenge. I think I confused her with the previous 180 being so similar. My arm was up and of course she didn’t come in. I tried to fix it by picking her up on the right. I didn’t connect, and she went behind and took 9 again. In the end I turned and connected with her, and it worked! My dig dig was super late.
I was happy that when I said go-go she turned her head away from me and back on the line.WILSON. I try to avoid talking when he is over a jump. I heard the tic on 5.
As you know, I have struggled with pinwheels. I used the verbals “jump” and “out” 🤪 and I’ve never done that before. I think I will continue with a verbal on it. Not sure which I like better. When he pulled off of the tunnel it was one of my classic, nonsupportive moments. I will own that, but the tunnel was right in front of him!! Was my motion just too much?
In my final run where he pulled off 11, I was pointing. My chest was pointed towards him. Should it have been towards the jump? Was I backing up too much? What’d I do wrong?

ParticipantAU
So once again you have created a game that I think …. Yep, they can do that, when in reality ….No they can’t.
Wilson thought is was nutz. My behaviors were sit and spin. I had forgotten how sit is a default for him when he’s waiting for me for something. The spin is typically a pretty fun thing, but when he was sitting, he was unable to transition to the spin. I let him ponder for a while, worked with Demi, and then came back. I switched to stand and spin as my chosen behaviors, thinking if he was already standing it would make the spin easier. Nope. He couldn’t do it.
Demi was much more attentive and reactive to my cues. Some behaviors were wrong, or partial, but she appeared to understand what I was asking.
This was hard!
Incidentally, am I breaking all the rules of AU? Should I not be posting videos of both dogs at the same time?
peggy mooney
ParticipantThis was much harder than it looks!
Both dogs looked at my cookie hand, not my eyes. That’s not right, is it? After Demi did it with no distraction, I brought out 2 tennis balls. Not a great idea…. She was not successful. So I took one away. Better, but still 2 unsuccessful attempts. Then I moved farther away. That worked.
With wilson, I only put one ball out. He is a bit more savvy to my games, but did only slightly better than Demi.
Another mistake I think I made …. “Git it”, often refers to a ball, or anything I want them to retrieve. I think I totally confused them. 😫😫. Can’t believe I made it so difficult for them!
Looking ahead to the sequences …. I don’t believe I have a good moving activity. She does hand touches. Spins are lured. She can “back”, but that seems counterproductive. Can I use hand touches?

ParticipantThank you for all the nice comments!
Relative to your request to see video of wilson pulling off an obstacle when I don’t support it, here are 2. Unfortunately they couldn’t be at a farther end of the ring, away from the camera!
In the first clip, he didn’t take the tire after the DW. Hard to see because the judge is in The way too, but I sent him, he started to go, I started to peel away, and he came with me.
In the second clip, there was a pinwheel after the weaves. My first thought was that I didn’t go deep enough into the pocket to cue the second jump. However, unless I handled it horribly wrong, I think he is experienced enough to know to take it.
What do you think?
peggy mooney
ParticipantI kick myself every time I make a not-so-positive comment! Thanks for the reminder.
I do tend to look at the obstacle instead of the dog. I’m not sure why my brain insists on doing that, but I am aware. These were good exercises to reinforce that connection.
Nope …. No love for the teeter. Although it wasn’t used in today’s session, but I did practice it independently, and there is improvement.
Today’s runs went back to sequences. I feel like she is becoming more and more confident to work away from me. Moving away from the weaves is still tricky. Although she didn’t pop out here, I did a few more runs afterwards and she did pop out when she thought I was too far away. Of course I didn’t get that filmed.
I also included a clip with Wilson. His distance is pretty good, but we mess up because I don’t continue to support him when I offer opposing motion. He didn’t do it here because the distance between obstacles is smaller. We have gotten caught in situations where I send him, and try to get away from him with no support. 😣

ParticipantLove the table idea! As I was working I was questioning myself about the TT placement. I was uncomfy with all the behaviors she is expected of on the table, and I felt like I was really muddying the waters Thanks for the suggestions!
Yep, setting the line before moving away was the ticket! She didn’t want to stay in the weaves when I left to early. Agree?
peggy mooney
ParticipantWe started the skill sets with the weaves. We had the opportunity to do 2, and then had a Tricky Trainer malfunction.
Re-armed with the Manners Minder, we moved on to the table. She is not comfortable on the table and it showed! She was able to leave me much better on the weaves than the table, I think because of the confidence in the obstacle. I helped her a lot more at the table. So go back and do more table work before trying to add independence, right?
Later in the day we tried using the tunnel. I found myself moving away and sending to the wing, instead of going around the wing, and then moving away. The farther away I moved, the more verbals and connection she required. What do you think?

ParticipantTracy,
I wanted to stop in again to thank you for …. everything!! Demi and I have been taking a class with you, nonstop, since Max Pup 2019. I am so happy with how far she has come, and where we are going.
We look forward to more fun in the future. Training space is at a premium now. My yard is out of the question, and the Club is currently in what NYS calls the “orange” zone, so my fear is that will soon be closed indefinitely. We will figure something out!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and Eric. Stay safe, and we will see you the next time around.
Peggy, Demi and Wilson too.
PS. I thought I told you, but maybe I didn’t … just at the moment I decided I was going to drop Wilson to preferred 20″, I decided, what the hell … challenge his measurement first. So I did. and… I got him measured down!! It wasn’t easy, but he is now officially a regular 20″ dog. Happy Dance.

ParticipantHi Tracy. It’s been a while due to lack of training space. Theses little sequences were fun. I think after I do about 67,000 more ball drops I can increase backside understanding. 😁. I’m babysitting the landing bc I’m not convinced she will come back over the jump. I also find myself depending on my convergence to get her to the backside. After “reviewing” my runs, I should have given her more opportunity to take the backside with me further away, and not quite in her path. Right?
peggy mooney
ParticipantInteresting! So it sounds like the fix is basically, take the backside AND COME BACK OVER THE JUMP. Thank you so much! This is so fixable. I will continue to go back to some of our previous exercises, drop the ball, and work more on “finishing” the jump.
As with my previous submission, working on 1 or 2 jumps feels weird to me, but I can see the lesson is so valuable. We can do this!
Rain has returned here, and SOTC is closed for 4 days due to an obedience trial. Stay tuned…
peggy mooney
ParticipantThese were fun! I can definitely see the “disconnect”. When I disconnect at the blinds, I was pretty sure she didn’t take the jump, but I wasn’t positive.
A backside to a blind (what’s that called?) is close, but not we’re there. Am I disconnecting too soon?
