    Hi,
I was thrilled with how she did. If 100% was best ever starts (ranked on speed, focus, directability, not handling), these were in the high 90%. Third start was like the first. Fourth was like the second except a little barkier, a little stickier, and a little more distracted. Fifth was a little more of the above. So if I lost 5% of the package on the 4th, I lost about another 5% on the fifth. Honestly that felt most like mental fatigue with maybe a little physical fatigue thrown in. She did hold every stay that I asked for all day. The last seminar we had some intermittent problems with broken start lines.
I do find that I struggle a bit off the start too. I work so hard to maintain her focus and not spin up with her that I then tend to be late and forget cues off the start. It is better, at least I am generally remembering courses. I don’t have that problem with Pip :). Once we settle in it improves dramatically but then I find I also struggle with mental fatigue by the end. 5 8 minute turns are tough for me too.

    Hi,
I would love to see the games in flyball. We do have some distraction issues there as well. I am posting the start of the first 2 sessions at the Jessica Ajoux seminar today. I did do a little pattern game when the dog before her was between reps. I also tried to do the in hand version before starting her on the far end (no treat tossing on the turf). If you would like to see more of either session I can PM you, but I can’t figure out how to turn off sound on the videos.

So, a couple questions have come to mind as I work on the exercises.
    1. I have been working on the pattern game on walks. How fluent should the pattern be to continue verse bailing and moving further from distraction (ie squirrel in tree)? Is a 1 second look on each end okay, 5 seconds, 10 seconds? She was able to disengage without my signal but when I was what I would consider too close (based on her response) it was 10 seconds to disengage each end. I didn’t intend to make it that difficult and next time worked further away with much more fluency, but in the moment I couldn’t decide whether to immediately back up or continue with the slow responses (FYI it didn’t improve in several reps).
    2. I the game where you leave the toy. I put it on the chair and rewarded 1-2 steps with great focus then pinged to 3 and she stopped dead. She didn’t go grab the toy but didn’t come for what felt like an eternity. What do I do in that moment – freeze and wait, continue walking, or call her reward and reset? I did a few more short and then she did 3 steps with focus and we quit. Sorry no video.
Finally I am attaching some video from the nosework workshop we attended. Unfortunately Shelly failed to tape the Mexican jumping bean impression on the way to the start, but as soon as I cued her line up she settled and worked beautifully (for a dog with little nosework experience). Please feel free to only watch the first few seconds if I edit it you will never see it. The is my vision of the focus I want (although obviously with much more speed). There were dogs and people including one of her favs but I am sure the relative absence of motion is a big factor.

    Hi,
Here is try 2 at the pattern game and start line. Yes, I was training her while my students walked the course. I did a couple reps of pattern game send tunnel pattern game send tunnel at the end just to start trying to figure out how to do it in a less distracting environment.
Yes students walking a course and lab just off screen soliciting play are less distracting than the barn :).

    Hi,
Fortunately I don’t teach online courses as I am out of shot in the first video, sigh. I was not specifically shaping for sit, just feet on bag. This is something we’ve done a lot but this is a new object.
Second video I found interesting. I was going to stop after rep 4, but best laid plans :).

    Hi,
So I am posting 2 videos from the barn last night. I posted whole sessions (this is the entirety of her training time). So you could see the behavior at the barn. This is diametrically opposite of what I get at trials. It is important to me to get her as excited running at the barn as at trials because this is the only local space big enough to do real distance work.
The bottle you made an odd popping noise last week and since I am getting some weird behaviors with that toy. I will switch out, but barn toys can’t be used other places and a car clean out to fit the pup in the car meant there wasn’t another ready to go. Video 1 is pattern then her “turn” in class. Video 2 is line up then her second “turn” in class. I do teach the class and although my students are gems I do have to be mindful of their time.

    Hi,
I just mean small. Unless a dog reacts at her (in which case her inner terrier bitch may respond), she is much more interested in the field and dogs running than anyone nearby. The hang out space is maybe 20×20 with crates with 6 dogs in the class.

    Hi,
So Lanna and I went to a UKI trial this weekend. It is clear her go and lateral send from 20-30 feet behind nonexistent (it is also clear that her arousal level exceeds her ability to actually take the jump but that is a separate issue ;)). On the flip side it didn’t exceed her ability to hit and hang on to every set of weaves all weekend.
So obviously she needs substantially more long line distance go work (speed circles, forward send lines, and lateral distance curves), but the question is do I start short and work up on variations of exercise 1 and 2 or put the tug out as a lure and work big distances (the way I trained Pip) or some version of all of the above.
Our current limitations to success are forward send to jump, lateral send to jump, some start issues (fortunately you have a class for that, and running contacts – slow but steady progress).
I did also sign up for the Russian distance class which I will probably struggle to complete and the getting to the start line class ;).
I realize this is philosophical vs strictly about verbals, but given limited training time and wear on body I want to be strategic about how to get where I want to go.

    Hi,
I try to alternate every time, but sometimes it’s right, right, left, left. I did 2 left sessions in a row the past 2 days because I caught that after I posted. They look similar so won’t post. Will add 2 sandbags next session.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Things are going very well. The session at the barn (ultra high distractions) and most recent at my friend’s building.

    Hi,
Channels came in the mail a few minutes ago. The 2 sessions posted are from Leslie’s building using her very old channels. We couldn’t adjust the one base hence the cone and mm next to it. This was Lanna’s first time seeing channels but she has done weave a matics as that is what I have at the barn so obviously the base concept transferred.

And Leslie was confused about threadle weaves so here is a short threadle weave session with channels.

Lanna said straight poles, no problem.

    Hi,
We have been continuing to work the plank with mm around the clock. The barn is better and last session I was able to start a little around the clock (I was excited and looked forward to posting until I discovered a video error meant I didn’t get any of the session). This video is pretty consistent with what we’ve been getting (except in the very high distraction barn)the last few sessions. Should I continue on as is or change something?

So then this happened today. She actually had 4 or 5 perfect reps prior to me starting the video.

    Hi,
Here are 2 1+7 sessions and a threadle entry one. The first session the wings were a little too close creating confusion. The threadle entries fried both our brains a bit ;).

    Hi,
2 and 8 plus a couple 1 and 7 (there was leftover cheese ;)). I thought it went really well. I’m planning on a 1 and 7 session next. I ordered channels for home so that will make it easier to work channels soon.
