    Hi,
My first terrier (9lb) had a 4 on teeter and 2o2o on the other 2. I had some trouble maintaining a drive to the end of the board as that isn’t always an obvious criteria (to the dog). In a 9lb dog that becomes a huge issue as they need to get near the end before it drops. You make some good points about the downsides of the 2o2o. I will continue to consider :).

    For verbals I currently have:
    Okay – release to work
Go do dog stuff and free as different versions of release to world at large.
Out – send laterally – ie pinwheel or 180, in Pippin it tends to be a 1 jump and back in
Far – a stay on an outside line – for gamblers
Back – take backside from outside hand
In – go past jump on inside hand and then turn away to backside
    Step – wrap toward
    Flip – wrap away
Jump – take jump when may need extra support
With – stay with me until release to an obstacle
Get it – release to toy/food on ground

I think those are the biggies. I have an obedience stay, but I threw away the start line stay years ago :). I will probably try again for some version of left and right but am 0/2 in success at teaching it. I bought verbals for slackers which I will start eventually so am hoping this time will be the winner.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the tips.
Lanna will have running dog walk and A-frame. I’m leaning toward 2o2o on teeter as I am super comfortable training that and I’m not sure anything else will be faster in a low 20s pound dog. If someone presents a reliable faster option, I am willing to consider a different plan.
For the jump wrap I had also done that work (the little I had done) with cookies and a clicker. I haven’t really done any shaping with a toy. At first I felt like she doing a little, wait we don’t do this with a toy :). We’ll move closer and keep at it (a few reps here and there). I will also work on cleaning up the send to target. I could tell it wasn’t great, just hadn’t figured out how to clean it up.

    Hi,
We took advantage of the spring like weather to do some hiking so are a little slow finishing the last 2 videos.

    Clicker stays:

    And the reverse retrieve:

Hope you had a great Xmas.

    Hi,

Here are 2 of this week’s exercises. I think we have done the ladder once quite a while ago so was a bit surprised to watch her do it without me.

I struggled a bit mentally with the blind crosses, but some of these should be correct (hopefully).

    Hi,
    I have a technical question:
When tossing a reward to the target while moving away do you reward those reps only at target, at target and then back at you, or some of each?

Here are Lanna and I working on Monday’s lesson. I tried to tape the target to the floor with limited success. The run off in the middle was to a toy lying on the ground. It struck me as a frustration/confusion behavior (I’d love your opinion). I see that I am leaning over, sigh. Clearly I need someone yelling at me to stand up :).

    Hi,
Here’s where we are currently on Friday’s lessons.

    Foot targeting:

Dual training – or when the the puppy out performs the terrier :). Clearly this is a hole in my training program.

    Hi,

I have attached Monday and Wednesday’s lessons.

Backing up over a slat. She is targeting the slat with her front legs as she backs. I can only occasionally get her to step behind it with both front legs. I did previously teach her to back onto a target, so I’m guessing that is part of the confusion.

    Perch with one slat.

Shaping onto moving object (this is a new object first session start to finish). The distraction was 2 of my students coming in the door for class. She also is having trouble if I move away and tug without picking up the object. As you can see, she finds jumping on stuff highly reinforcing:). I have been very careful to make sure I am waiting until she has engaged with the toy and I can signal the end of tug. Should I be building in another delay? I just know that self serve “agility” can create issues.

    Thanks.

    Hi,
We have done one round of trying to get the cookie exercise right the first time. It will take some work :).

Attached is shaping a toy retrieve. This was after I was getting a consistent toy toss through the previous session and was working toward an actual carry.

This is working on getting the toy retrieve. We did some back and forth with 2 fairly equal value toys.

    Hi,
After a week at my parents I picked up dogs and spent the weekend at an agility trial. The Monday exercises were taped in a “quiet” corner of the crating area and the Wednesday exercise in a fenced field outside. I decided Friday’s exercises need a quieter space and a handler with more energy than I had left so hopefully I’ll be able to post them Monday.

    Hi,

Here is the collar grab session. She was fine with the grab (we have worked that before), but I had never tried to then get her to move after grabbing it. As you will see that was hard for her.

Here is shaping the back up. There is still some offering of the paw behavior from earlier sessions and a few missed opportunities for clicks but she is starting to offer a back up.

I fly to my parents Monday (no dogs) so won’t be posting video till the end of next week.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Tug on leg – the whole session looked like this tiny snippet.

First attempt at retrieve toy. Poor phone location makes it hard to see but she went around the corner of the bed and laid down just out of reach. She let me grab the toy without dancing further away. The whole session looked like this piece.

I switched toy and location and this session was much more successful. My guess is combo of both helped. The whole session looked like this piece.

    Hi,
Here is the mountain goat exercise. The suitcase is new, but we have shaped standing on 10+ objects. I actually had trouble finding a novel object. There is also a little out from toy work at the end.

    Current plan for outside issues:
    Parking lot of store/post office/etc
Park 50-100 feet from entrance. Combo of sniffing/wandering at distance and more specific using cookies (from hand mostly) and distance in a desensitization/counterconditioning plan. Within a few minutes she is comfortable at 10 foot range (actually if someone does the cute puppy routine she turns into the can we be besties ever wiggle whole body and try to jump on person)
Have done similar work near hotel entrance. On walk she notices (reacts – I use that loosely to mean looks and maybe slightly stiffens) at about 30-40 feet – again once close enough to realize it’s a person the reaction is gone. I use treats and distance from path). I do some reward for look without other reaction yields treats and/or increased distance. The interesting part is once the person is close enough to equal person she is wiggly happy puppy. My opinion for what it is worth is she is having trouble recognizing outside people/dogs at distance as people/dogs and I am also fighting some startle. I have also been working behaviors and tug in front yard (this time of year few people and dogs) but to build confidence and generalization of behaviors to outside.
At trial sites in familiar locations zero reaction to people/dogs outside or friendly pull on leash towards. At new trial location, mild concern until enters building first time then as again friendly social butterfly.
There are almost always treats in hand or pocket when she and I are outside.
I walk her mostly alone occasionally with older BC, Pippin. I have one dog (Pippin) who is incredibly friendly but overstims mildly in the presence of bikes and barking dogs and a terrier Haydn who has fear/reactivity issues That she never walks with. Haydn has a plan – desensitization and management that does not involve her (and is showing steady progress). He does walk with the BC.
As an FYI – my 3 dogs all play and hang out loose with zero issues. Although the terrier is fear reactive he was buddies with her almost instantly.
Inside buildings I am actually working on reigning in a little the social butterfly so she isn’t continuously dancing on the end of the leash with her come hither lookS.
I hope this makes sense. I am investing significant time in the hanging and walking outside is fabulous remedial work as I enjoy walking and hiking with my dogs and it is important to me that we can enjoy being outside at non-dog events together.
Final thought as I do ER work, my nights and days are flipped and until recently when night started at 5pm I was rarely outside with dogs as night (Except potty trips) as I am working.
