Got them to go, but had to do each one in a separate post to make it happen. Sorry for all the separate posts. Sigh…
Last – Toy Race…
We’ve worked on back up before, but not lately and apparently we are pretty much back to square one on that. Will keep working on all of this stuff.
That went thru – the other didn’t go again. Am going to see if I divide it up it will go…
Thanks Tracy! Great ideas. Will do – going to a trial this weekend and will do some of this stuff there. He’s actually the first dog I’ve had that can watch the ring and hand out without getting barky and goofy acting, so I can do these things near ringside I think. Will let you know…
I’m trying to catch up, so sorry about so many vids at once.
First up is shaping a back up…
OK, so we’ve been in several new environments and met some new dogs, etc. After Wager and even Rody it’s nice to have one who seems so confident!
Dogs – (confident) he is confident but not overly alert meeting other dogs, kind of matter of fact, except for 1 dog we met. He kind of bowed up at her (more alert, hard eye, tight mouth) then when she came right up to him he barked twice. Later that dog had a puppy approach and she snapped lunged at the puppy, so I put this one down to Spot was reading the dog and warning. He met a nice aussie yesterday and she could have already been in our pack the way it went. Yay!
People – (neutral) He goes up to people calmly if I allow him to. Usually smells their leg. Accepts a pet – most people pet on the head and he is fine with that. In puppy class he is able to loose leash walk around a person acting goofy (funny poses, flinging arms, etc). Has gone past a person in a wheelchair and just looked, but walked on with me. During Thanksgiving dinner he laid on a bed about 10′ from the table, didn’t bark when people came in. Yay!!
Different environments – (confident and alert) in wide open spaces he tends to lose his ability to hear for a couple minutes as he runs around and sniffs stuff, but after a couple minutes I can call him back and reward him. In tight spaces where he has to go through a small gap in a barrier he hesitates like he doesn’t know what to do, but once he understands will go thru fine. I can make the bed with him in it and he doesn’t move for a bit – once he tries to get out he does so without getting stressed. In general, outdoors and stores he tends to look more at his surroundings but out of curiosity not stress from what I can tell.
Noises – (Neutral) when the lid off the trash can fell right next to him he jumped away not to get hit, but then just turned and smelled the lid. I had the people at the feed store drop my keys from a height and he didn’t quit sniffing the treats below the counter. A baking sheet fell in the kitchen when he was laying by me relaxing and he jerked his head up at the noise, then laid back down. He reacts, but gets over it quickly. He’s alert and interested when he hears agility videos playing on my computer – will come over, perk up and tilt his head.
I think as he starts to understand the game he’ll be more stimulated near the ring, but at present he can be in the stands with me and watch. First dog I’ve ever had that can do that!
I had 4 homework assignments. Hit submit and screen changed like it did it, but nothing showed. Did it again and same thing. Next time I tried it said just above in a pinkish colored box ‘slow down, it looks like you’ve already submitted this’. But this morning it still hasn’t shown up. Will try again now.
Haha! The first two were recalls, the ones facing him were just tug sit tug with adding some distance. I hadn’t talked to him on the first go round so I was trying to add some praise as I moved away, adding duration and distance. I should have said that in the intro to the video. Thanks for the advice! I’m hoping my new longer toys make it in today.
I”m headed out later to work on new environments, but thought while I had a little quiet time I’d answer the ‘at home’ questions.
Does she like to sniff outside or sniff out cookies in a rug or snuffle mat? – yes, quite the treat hound. Doesn’t get frustrated if he can’t get to it though – like between crate and wall or whatever.
Does she like to chew a bone or Bully Stick? – YES!
Does she like to lick a stuffed Kong or lick you? – YES to kong, no to me. This is my go to when I leave him crated for a few hours, frozen yogurt/peanut butter in kong.
Does she seek out body contact? – Not as a way to comfort or gain courage. He comes flying into my lap when playful to ‘wrestle’ – can’t find a good word, will play with a toy lying against me or bring me one to waggle for him as he plays against me but doesn’t want to snuggle when still.
I worked on being a better tugger. I see that I’m still wagging the toy up and down. sigh… But, I tried to focus on playing all the way back to our next rep. Didn’t have anyone to hold him so I just did stay and recall. If I toss a cookie the opposite way and run he isn’t very interested in the toy yet. Still working on getting him to trade treat to toy with low value treats and high value toy (new toys to arrive soon!).
Anyway, hope this is better on recalls and tug sit tug.
Yes, I’ll put that into action in the future. I had already done this video before I got that feedback. Thanks!! We did recalls in our puppy class tonight. Will find lots of places to work on this.
