BTW, he doesn’t have a middle name yet – was going to see what you came up with during Stacy’s camp, but… 🙂

Spot, Spotty Body, Spot Bot, Spot Wat (Watson) will be 1 year old in 1 week. That is when I have started letting my dogs really begin obstacle training with my other guys. Spot is intact so I’m pretty sure joints should be closed. Any thoughts on how I begin to raise bars or if I should yet as I progress with these exercises? I’m assuming I’d start with jump grids and more straight line stuff and then start to raise them for wrapping drills after he learns to just get over higher bars. Not sure if that’s correct or not.

I think I”ve gotten so used to cheerleading that I don’t even know I’m doing it! Will certainly stop it. yay!! Time to treat him like a dog, not a little puppy. 🙂 It’s going to be a bit before i can get more done – Lots of rain this week, field is already covered in water and more to come. Will get back to it asap.

    Thanks!

Thanks!! I did this in the evening and lightened up the video again, so if the quality isn’t good enough to see the detail you need I can redo them. I have to say, I just grabbed him, ran out from the car and did these and didn’t remember to keep my hand back on the blinds. Will be more conscious about it next session. And I spread the jumps out further on this set. 🙂

So, why am I getting the bark with the fc? It’s when he’s near me. When he did it the second time as he came to me at the fc I redid the pinwheel part to make sure I was all the way rotated when he came over the jump and still got the bark. It’s definitely something I do – Wager does the same thing when he comes in close after a fc – exact same timing on his complaint and thankfully it doesn’t happen anymore, but that’s one of the times I’d get a tooth hug with Wager back in the day. (I”m so happy to be able to say that’s in the past!)

    Here you go…

That all sounds like great ideas. Yay that we got a mic drop on the last ones! Great ideas. Will use them for sure. I used the MM on top of the crate for Wager when he was younger so I am familiar with that. Just didn’t think about it.

So, I didn’t get this posted yesterday, but worked on a couple of the sequences. I took Spot by himself to my land and did 2 reps, then drove home and picked up Wager and went back. Got another rep in after we got back then let Wager out to play. I can’t get much done very quickly this way, but it’s making me learn to get it right on the first rep which is a bonus – not that i”m getting that done yet, but at least i’m working on it. 🙂 Anyway, here’s these…

We got some work in early before it got too hot. I got Spot out of the car, ran out and did 2 reps, put him back in the car in the a/c and worked Wager a bit. Spot was barking, whining and howling. I”m not sure how I feel about him learning to be rowdy in the car/crate. I like that he WANTED HIS TURN!!, but I’m not sure I want to foster barky behavior in a dog that doesn’t do that. Especially with Wager barking like crazy and Spot remaining quiet so far. Wager is not easy to have in a car because he barks at everything from people walking by to birds and when I first leave, you’d think someone was murdering him. It’s been so nice to not have a barker this time. Anyway, he was a bit goofy when he first came out, I took him on the field and he just ran around so I took him to the pond and let him chillax then went back in for 1 more rep and we left before he was over it. Anyway, here’s the result. I know I was in the totally wrong place on the blind on the second rep. I was thinking about timing so much I didn’t think about location. LOL! Since my blinds felt easier on the previous exercise I tried to do fc’s on the ones that were either or.

OK, so not our most successful day. It was hot and muggy, but at least I had some dry places on my course! I started with the FC, BC thing. He was happy to play with a toy for the first few reps then I lost him. I let him swim and cool off and tried the ladder with motion. Because of where the jumps and camera are set up I had done dog on left before so I tried some dog on right. Not sure if he was hot again or if it was the side change or what but we didn’t have good reps. First I started at the same position I was at on the other side, then went back to further down the line to start. Not sure why 3 bars came down last rep unless he was tired and hot. One day the MM is the best thing in the world and he is so happy to go to it, then next day, meh. Today was meh. Will keep at it with me past the last jump dog on right and work back from there. On the FC, BC thing I see I’m still late on my FC’s. It feels like I’m moving faster than I am, but once I look at it on video…sigh. Anyway, just happy it’s done with the raining for a while. 🙂

I’m continuing to work on the lazy pinwheel stuff. Great thoughts and I’ve brought the jumps in closer.

Got tons of rain this morning so I waited till day’s end to do these and it got dark while I was working on them – I lightened the video as best I could. We are supposed to get a bunch more rain tomorrow so I’ll be flooded out for a while.

I did the fc and bc stuff – worked a bit, then went to the ladder with motion and came back after that. I kept all reps in. Wasn’t sure since all build on each other if I should or not, but I edited out all the playing and set ups.

Did the ladder with motion dog on left. Will go back and do dog on right when I can. I only included first two and last two reps. I did one each of walking past last jump, last jump, 3rd, 2nd, 1st then did a slow jog from 2nd jump then medium jog from between 1st and 2nd jump. Here’s that…

So, do the ladder grid and after you are doing that with movement then go on to the wrap to the grid? One follows the completion of the other?

Sorry to be the thick one here, but when you say start the jump grids at any point does that mean you can do the one with the wrap before you finish getting them to the moving from the 3rd jump progression in the ladder grid or should we wait till they are used to that much movement before starting the jump wrap to the grid?

I took another shot at the progressive grid and the lazy pinwheel. Grid is set up at 6′ for the first 3 and the last at 15 and 18 ft. He broke a couple of times. I did a couple of rewards for his stays which meant that the toy that was interesting at first was not on his radar after the treat came out. I was holding the toy then the treat low on the recall.

Pinwheel was after the grid and although it was cool and everything was set and ready, he didn’t have a lot of enthusiasm. I tried to reward often on his line. Seems like he got a bit better as we went. I think I broke the rules on number of reps I recorded, but since it was all broken down to smaller pieces I couldn’t really decide what was a rep. LOL!

Funny little guy. Most of the time he loves to go to that MM, even on the grids we’ve done in the past. Every day is a new day with that boy! Will give the toy a shot – maybe when he’s that excited he’ll like it better. Thanks!

Will do! Will give these another try in the next day or two. Thanks!

Today I did the progressive grid. I think maybe I set him too close to the first jump?? He took a stride in between 1 and 2 a couple times. The footing is a little loose so that may also be part of it – might not be getting as good of a push off as he did before. I did 6′ between the first jumps and then did 15, 18 and 21 for the 4th jump. This is all but 1 rep. It was very similar to the second rep. I had a manners minder on the ground about 20′ past the last jump, but he didn’t actually go to it. Just ran to me not looking at it as I stood next to it. I think the good thing about just showing up and doing things right away is he has some energy, the not so good thing is he’s really excited to be there and his brain isn’t settled yet (he and Wager get out of the car and bark and celebrate getting to play, then Wager runs the outside of the course). I’m not discouraging Wager most of the time because I never get to train with other people/dogs so it’s my only dog distraction. I’ll ask him to stop running if Spot can’t stay with me, but most of the time it’s not an issue.

Anyway, here’s our progressive grid first attempt.

I had a chance today before rain tonight and tomorrow to work on a couple of our first exercises. I couldn’t remember on the lazy pinwheel if you wanted us to stay quiet or use verbal cues and since he started a little hesitant I just used cues. Hope that was right.

Also did the pinwheel send. Was able to do both exercises in one session without losing his interest too much. I went and set up both exercises, where my phone would be, etc then drove back and got the dogs, so Spot had very little down time before starting (except for digging for a gopher till I could get him on the course). LOL! Anyway, I was pleased with this. First rep I took too many steps and there was one attempt where I stepped with the wrong foot and he didn’t send out. Bad mama! Here’s that…

Quick question on jump height for Spot. He just turned 11 months, is intact male, 19 1/2″ tall. So far, I”ve not asked him to jump over 8″. What do you think about the oxer height for him to start with and how to progress? I know this question is about just my dog but I posted it here in case others had a similar question. Thanks! 🙂
