ParticipantHo Tracy,
Here are 2 exercises we did today. By the time we started doing them it got too hot.
I was using sliced cheese stick for the lazy game but she still losing them in the grass so it wasn’t very smooth. Tried it again with a different treat after I posted this and it was even harder finding them with too much sniffing around. π
She was a little worried about the seesaw. At first wouldn’t lower her head for the makeshift tray I made and I needed to go up with her. I don’t blame her, but I think she’ll be ok with it after a few more practices unless you think I should put it down a little lower for the next few times? She likes the bang game and targeting at the down end.

ParticipantHi Tracy,
We did this today. If it’s too late that’s OK. I realize my timing of reward is bad. The Get Out! was our second try doing this today since the first time she just kept going over the jump, but I’m sure that’s because of the jumping drills we’ve been doing lately.
MaxPup has been awesome! See you in MaxPup3!

ParticipantHi Tracy,
Yeah, that 8 foot distance was ugly! Bringing the heights up at the 5 foot distance didn’t feel right, but when you said rep 5 I was going by the instructions from the accordian grid which ends same as rep 1. π Just so I have this right next time it sounds like from now on once the distances between 2 & 3 get moved out they stay out for that session and only raise the last bar 2″ at each new session… Figured I missed that somewhere LOL! Should I be doing the Ladder drill on its own separately at all at the 5′ distance for now? π
Thanks for being such a patient coach! Enjoy your weekend!

ParticipantHi Tracy,
We finally had a chance to repeat the accordian jump drill today with your revised distances. Got rained out yesterday!
We went from 4′-8″ to 5′, 7′-8″ to 8′, 10′-8″ to 11′ and 13′-8″ to 14′.
I also tweaked the heights but wasn’t sure if I did those the right way. I put text on the video at the beginning of each change showing height and distance.
Looking forward to your analysis and advice.

Participant>>You can probably round the inches into feet now β make it a 5 foot distance to start and use 3 foot increments after that. That will start to approximate what she will see on course and you wonβt need to be as precise with inches.>>
Perfect!!! Thank you!!! π

ParticipantSorry I forgot to add the distances and height!
On the video the height was 6″ on all 3 jumps
Distance was 56″ between jumps 1 & 2 on all reps
Rep 2 92″ between jumps 2 & 3
Rep 3 128″
Rep 4 92″
Rep 5 56″Just to make sure I understand correctly, repeat the drill changing like this?
Rep 1 56″ between all jumps
Rep 2 92″ between jumps 2 & 3
Rep 3 128″ between jumps 2 & 3
*Rep 4 164″ between jumps 2 & 3 (added another 36″ from rep 3)
*Rep 5 56″ between all jump with height raised to 8″ on the last jump?
*Rep 6 same as Rep 5 but raise height to 10″ on the last jump? And assuming I should wait a few days before retrying…
Thanks!

ParticipantHey Tracy, here is the Accordian jump drill using a moving toy. Let me know what you think.
Thanks!

ParticipantHi Tracy,
For some reason I didn’t get an email of your reply like I usually do so I logged on over here to see if you’ve been on the forum. Checked my email again and it went to spam!
Thanks for the info!
On the accordian with Hola I had a stationary Hollee ball on the ground about 15 feet out from the last jump.
I’ll try it again with a moving toy and see what you think!

ParticipantHi Tracy,
Yikes! I can’t believe I’ve been offline and haven’t done any MaxPup in 2 weeks. Doubtful I’ll finish up MP2 by the end of the month but will try to do some of it 2-3 times by the end of the month and before MP3 starts.
Do you have any suggestions for online contact training? I am thinking about running a-frame and stopped teeter and dogwalk. I need something online because I’ve never done any type of running contacts with my dogs and it’s been forever since I’ve trained contacts. I’m sure things have changed in 8 years. I’d like your advice on this if you have any you can give me.
Hola and I did the Accordian jump exercise today. I will be interested to hear your thoughts!
Thanks!

ParticipantGood morning!
>>NICE transitions into decel!! She was able to commit in collection while driving ahead of you β perfect! One oopsie but that is on the side that seems to be less comfy for you (dog on left) but you worked it out and your last rep was perfection. SUPER!!!!!>>
I watched the Mission Transition video in slo-mo last night and I was thrilled at how well Hola did! I could hardly believe my eyes how well she read the decel and made some really nice tight turns!
>>Next step when you train this skill β raise the bar to the next height (2 inches higher).>>
Just so you know, that would be an 8″ bar on Mission Transition. We haven’t raised a bar over 8″ for Hola yet in any of the jumping skills other than set point. We ended up on the set point with the front bar at 10″ and 56″ in between jumps. I think the ladder drill was 6″. We haven’t done either of those in awhile, I guess since we added in the Zig Zags. If I work in a ladder drill or set point during the week, keep jump height and distance the same as we did before?
So, going forward on the basic jumping skills (wing & 1 jump) like transitions, wraps, rear crosses etc. use 8″ height for now? I appreciate the advice to use a wing and one jump to practice the different turns, that’s perfect. I’m also glad to know that doing the exercises 1-3x a week is fine. We love balancing agility training time with nosework outings. π
One thing you mentioned in rotation was contacts and weaves. I haven’t done anything with either of those although Hola does love to jump on the end and bang the teeter. Will you have a separate class on contacts and weaves? Should I be starting to work on those now that Hola is 16 months old?
Thaks as always!

ParticipantHi Tracy,
Beautiful day today (hot or course, but low humidity and breezy) so we set up Mission Transition again. I seem to have more problems in the 2nd half of the video when I switched sides. I thought Hola read the turns better this time, though.
We will set Mission Transition aside now and concentrate on the last few exercises we haven’t gotten around to doing yet.
=====
I wanted to ask you about “This game can go into the general rotation” (zig zag comment).
I don’t have a general rotation, can you give me some examples of what we should be doing for a general rotation? It’s almost all I can do to get through each week’s games and haven’t been working past games in. I haven’t been training agility every day; there’s usually at least 1 day in between, often more. I know we need to work on rear crosses, serps, left/right, Go! etc. (basically everything, I guess!) π
I want to be careful not to overwork Hola or dampen her enthusiasm. We can only do so several short sessions in a day with this heat. Should we be doing maybe ONE past exercise on our off days so we’re doing something every day?? What about things like the Zig Zag, Ladder and Minny Pinny, which are jumping skill exercises? How often should we be doing each of these? Will we be raising the ladder drill jump heights in Session 3 and adding in more jumping skills?Looking forward to even more fun in Session 3!
Thanks as always!

ParticipantHi Tracy,
Hola and I practiced two of week 6 exercises this morning. I did some of the zigzag the other day a couple of times but forgot to press the record button both times! We went out this morning and did it again, plus added the mission transition exercise (2nd repeat of this one). I think both of these went a little better?
I kept the reps short and she stayed engaged. I didn’t do any more than you see on the videos but did take out video dead space while she retrieved the ball, etc. I asked her to lie down in the grass in between exercises which she was fine doing while I reset the tripod and a few things. We took a slow walk around to make sure she had cooled off enough (it’s humid today) and then did the 2nd exercise. I think she’s still hormonal from her season so I’m going to keep on doing things this way.
We still need to repeat the lap and tandem turns with racetrack added, and I haven’t done the get out exercise yet. Since I never got to the get out in MaxPup1 should I go back and do that first?
Looking forward to your comments!
Patti

ParticipantHere are a couple of little things we did today. We had to abort the tandem turn due to a gopher tortoise trying to find his way out of our fence. Later there were two and I think they were having words about whose hole was whose so I just moved to another spot where Hola wouldn’t see them.
We’ll retry the transitions another day.
Thanks for all your comments!

ParticipantUpon reading your comments I realized My Bad! Darn, I forgot to take the cheat sheet with me and didn’t remember this game starts with a send around a wing. Will do all your suggestions and keep working on it. Thanks so much!

ParticipantHi Tracy,
Hola & I took a couple of days off and decided to try the transition exercise again today. I think it went a little better than the last time, and it was also cooler this evening when we did this session. It’s still so hard for me to decel! I tried to focus on keeping my feet straight to the wing, but my first rep turning to the left of the wing I still did the same thing and she read it as a rear like before. Anyway, let me know if there’s anything else that will help me improve my decel transition handling and timing. π
Hope to try a couple of the others tomorrow.
Thanks!
