It’s a Rainy Day for Start Line Stay Play! 🙂

I could see in some of the reps I said “break” before her fluffy butt was completely on the floor, but sometimes it’s hard for me to tell.

Yes, it was with a placed toy on the ground and a tug in my hand. Great advice on the balance of toy/treats. Can’t wait to try it again and do it with a toy race. 🙂

Was my blind cross timing ok on those reps? Should I now try some sending a little farther away from the barrel?

Thanks for the great advice as usual!

    Here’s some we did today…
Should I make it a toy race to the toy on the ground when I combine the barrel with the other? As much as she loves her toys she was less interested in the toy when I had a piece of hot dog in my hand.

Sorry, wrong post! Couldn’t figure out how to delete it. Was watching Tracy’s video above.

Nope, those were the only reps we did, and I was actually embarrassed to post them. Especially the drawn out ready ready ready………..ugh! 😀

It didn’t feel good because I felt like I was manhandling her to look at the barrel. She wasn’t staring at the toy but she was pressing against me to turn her body that way. (I may have edited out the parts where she was struggling to turn and look at the toy to keep the whole video shorter). When I saw the reps where I kept saying ready it was because I knew she was going to flip away and go for the toy. When I woke up this morning I was thinking to myself. Should use a less enticing toy, should place the toy instead of throw, should maybe use food in a feed bucket instead…

I agree, I hated the length of time I waited for her to focus on the barrel, it felt pretty yucky which is why I thought the whole exercise was HARD. So let her go even if she’s not looking at the toy, even if she’s struggling against facing the barrel?

Thanks for the feedback, we will try again tomorrow! I was gone all day today volunteering at a nosework trial. Hola will be raring to go and do something after a boring Sunday home with Daddy watching TV all day! 🙂

Trying to get back into it now that my back is starting to feel better, but still not running yet.

This was HAAAAARD!!! I honestly can’t see any handling combos with decel or pivots happening with this any time soon! This wasn’t one of the tug toys that she’s super crazy about. Should I go to something pretty bland and try that, or food instead? I’m training by myself so no helper. I MISS being up in VA with my best training partner Cathy!

    Thanks!

I’ll pick up a hollee roller and see how that works for her. Should I attach some braided fleece to it so she can tug or do you just tug with the hollee ball?

This stay video was good for me to watch. I’ve been doing stays at various distances to a recall for food or toy as well as obedience type stays but not much of this at all. Great video! This goes on my list right away! I also was interested in the thread with you and Susan about using the word Break for the sit before going out crate, door, gate, etc. which is what I taught her as a puppy early on but it sounds like that shouldn’t be a problem.

Yeah I noticed the sliding, too. I need to figure out a better prop that won’t do that. 🙁 I realized midway and I remembered to use bite a few times, and I think I was still yess-ing on the mat not Get it. I definitely need get this straightened to be more clear with my cues remembering which ones to use.

I worry about the splatting on retrieves. I’ll look around and see if I have anything. She really likes those tugs with the rubber ball on the end and they’re easy to throw but I don’t want to break my little girl.

    Thanks again!

Woops we crossed paths here. I just added 2 more videos of Retrieving and Countermotion that I did before lunch! Sorry!

The comments on the exercises from yesterday are awesome detail and so helpful! And totally helps me understand more of the why as well as the how. I can’t wait to try all of those again, probably tomorrow.

    Thank you!!!

I’ve never seen Practigates used this way before, how clever! Are those skinny pool noodles that you cut? I want to try this!

    Good morning Tracy,

Hola and I redid the week 3 parallel path, rear cross and countermotion games yesterday. The “Get It” with cookie toss made the parallel path exercise much easier. Don’t know why I forgot that the other day, duh. The rear cross may have gone ok but it looks like I’m still late tossing the cookie. Will continue to mix up parallel path and the rear cross to work on it. Should I start crossing at more of a 90 degree angle, or anything else I should do? The countermotion exercise was the hardest. It seems as soon as I move she’s moving with me and had some miscommunication. Should I work more on sends for a few days increasing distance and commitment and then try the countermotion again?

We also did Plankrobatics in the afternoon on my home-made travel board, first flat on the ground, then raised higher and then on some Fitbones.

Today we did a little retrieving with 2 toys and sends to the prop with food and toy. On the retrieving with 2 toys is it ok if I show her the toy when I’m calling her back to me? I’ve been saying Bring or Tug but is there some other cue I should be using for driving back to me with a toy?

I head to Orlando after lunch for my doctor’s appointment to check on my hip and get another adjustment. The hip is finally doing much better!

    Thanks!

Here’s a little retrieving outdoors this morning. We worked on parallel path, rear cross, countermotion this afternoon but I want to redo tomorrow. At first when we were doing parallel path I was marking her hit on the prop with a “yes” which made her look at me. It took a few tries for her to move out ahead of me to the prop which I needed when we did the rear cross exercise so we worked on that, too. I think the contermotion went ok. The rear cross was more difficult because of the looking at me and she was stopping on the prop. Maybe I was slowing down and I’m wondering if I was too slow to toss the treat or not tossing it at the right moment. I realized after we did a few that I wasn’t doing a 90 degree turn either so I want to redo everything. Need to rewatch your video before trying again. So much to remember. 🙂

Not really they are pretty small. The dogs love them and they show up in the grass well but she was losing/searching for them in the grass yesterday so that’s when I moved over to the driveway! I kinda love the sound of that chomp-chomp myself, but I guess not for training. 😉

Thank you for the comment about the adolescent brain and sensitivities. I will definitely follow your advice.

I’ve been using Red Barn cheese protein puffs because they are yellow and easy to see in the grass. I don’t have much room in my “dog/office” so most things I need to do outdoors. I’ll try slices of cheese and see if that works better. Of course, I just ordered 12 bags of the cheese puffs but I can use that for our obedience work. 😀

Good to know she was releasing pressure from the leaf blower noise. It NEVER FAILS that when I’m trying to train something, be it MaxPup or nosework my husband comes out and does something to disrupt our session. 🙁

It is nice that we have an entirely fenced in property so it’s safe to let her zoom with a toy. I have found that when we play with one toy that she will run with it but will come back to me after a run for a tug with me and/or another throw of the toy.

Thanks so much for all the great commentary! We will backtrack on the parallel prop games today, Hola does love to “work”!
